loved the item of a "fictional" biography and getting to know Bo Carter, the story was fun and I was invested from beginning to the end.

This is a great way to get an overview of an important era in musical history while also enjoying a fairly personal recollection of what is clearly a life lived with music at its heart. It’s clearly not fictional. Even without the frank admission by the author, the depth of connection to the story is very clear.

I don’t like Bob Dylan’s music (why did I pick the book you ask? I like the music of the era) but that didn’t matter - the book is balanced in terms of taking the reader on a musical journey rather than slipping into fan-boi territory.

A clever inclusion in this is the multi-platform offering of music as well as literature. So great to be able to end the experience with a link to music!

The Last Record Album is a ‘fictional’ account of the life of singer-songwriter Bo Carter. The storytelling flows seamlessly that as a reader, I had to remind myself that this was a work of fiction.
Bo Carter is a part of the ever-changing music scene during the 1960’s. During the folk filled period of that decade he talked with Bob Dylan over a cup of coffee and his band was an opening act for England’s The Kinks, Along the way we meet his muse and wonders if Bo’s best days are far behind him. As Dylan once sang ‘the times they are a changing’ and Bo does not want to say goodbye to his decades long career or be cast as another two hit wonder. Bo believes there is another great song in him. Bob Dylan is interested in recording one of Bo’s songs and a well known Hollywood director needs a tune for a soundtrack. Could this be Bo’s chance to resurrect his career?
At the end of this book, the reader will find a link to the music of Bo Carter (written by James Porteous). This wonderful treat makes this novel very real, exciting and a highly recommended read.

The Last Record Album is a look behind the rapidly changing music scene during the revolutionary 1960s. As Dylan moved his folk singer/songwriter genre into the American mainstream, musician Bo Carter wondered if he might become more than a one-hit-wonder. Bo’s dreams and drive are capitalized by an industry all too ready to consume, a story we’ve heard before. Even though this is a fictional biography, we know all other characters in the book and we become sure that we must know Bo. The author includes not only this musician’s life story, but his songs with lyrics. The end of the book even includes, in the digital version, bandcamp (a music streaming service) links to Bo’s albums, all music written by the book’s author. AND there is also an incredible anthology of the best songs ever written during my lifetime which is alone worth the price of the book. An interesting multigenerational read especially for music lovers.
