What a ripping read! Carla Kovach takes you inside a complex and ever changing police investigation. All the characters are well developed and interesting from many angles. The red herrings abound and you don't know whodunnit until the end. Another great addition to the DI Gina Harte series!

Gina Harte is on the case of another serial murderer. This time the suspect has taken a young woman almost in plain sight, and her body is found with signs of being bound and with her lips glued together. When the murderer attempts another abduction, the target fights and gets away, but she cannot provide any details about her attacker. Within 24 hours, one of Gina's colleagues goes missing and assumed to be a victim of the same perpetrator. Gina and her team search frantically to find her before it's too late. With some misdirection, things get very intense and time is running out. Will they find their colleague in time? In her usual fashion, Kovach alternates storyteller voices (Gina, the victims, and the murderer). Not only does this provide insight into different characters, it also adds suspense, as readers gets bits and pieces of what drives the murderer. It's a good mystery that leaves me wanting to keep following Detective Harte.

Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I have liked everything this author has written and this was no exception. Great storyline and great characters and will have you hooked from Page 1. Roll on Book 9

This is the eighth book in the Gina Harte series, and the first one I’ve had the pleasure of reading.
When the body of a young woman is found in a lake, Gina and her team are called in to investigate. The story is told from several points of view, including the detective and the killer, and is was really effective at keeping me guessing as to which of the suspects was the murderer. I enjoyed the writing style, the author has obviously done her homework in researching police procedure, and found the portrayal of Gina and her team realistic. Gina’s strength in leading her team, while having doubts about her personal life make her a likable lead.
I will definitely be reading this series from the start, and have already signed up for the authors emails to be kept updated on future books. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this introduction to this great series.

Loved it!! The Detective Gina Harte Series is one of my favorites. Some parts of the book felt a little slow and drawn out, but over all it was a great mystery/thriller. There were so many twists and turns. I was suspicious of everyone in the book and thought pretty much everyone had to be the killer at one point or another. Was definitely shocked when the killer's identity was finally revealed. That was the one person for some reason that never crossed my radar as the possible killer. I was surprised I never figured it out. This person was definitely dealing with mental issues. Was Amber really the first irl he killed? There were some creepy people in this book. I want Gina and Briggs to live happily ever after. For every step forward they always manage to take ten steps back. I love reading about Gina and her group of officers. I laughed when Gina thought the three pesky kids reminded her of a Scooby Doo mystery. Loved Clover the kitty. He was an unexpected surprise, I was expecting Gina to find a dead body or someone tied up.

Definitely recommend the book and the previous ones. I can't wait to see what's next for Detective Gina Harte. Look forward to reading more books by the author. I loved the cover of the book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Broken Ones - a murder mystery that kept me gripped right until the end. When a body is found by a river and confirmed to be a missing student, Gina and her colleagues are tasked with finding out how and why she was murdered. With the murderer on the loose with potentially more victims, the narrative explores several different leads and all of the suspects seem plausible. I was very surprised at who the murderer was which made the book even better for me as it kept me guessing right until the end. Thank you Bookoture and Netgalley for letting me preview the book. I'd definitely recommend. It wont let me link to goodreads so I will review separately

I have read a lot of this series now and they do just seem to keep getting better! The earlier ones in the series focused a lot on Detective Gina Harte's own personal story but - now this storyline has played out to a greater extent - I love the new focus on the ingenious plotting, creepy scenarios and casts of suspicious characters!

This book opens with the death of a student, Amber, whose body is found in Cleevesford Park - she went out on a date and never returned to her worried housemate. Harte and her team begin their investigations and begin uncovering some weird characters and lots of secrets surrounding the dead woman. The leads begin to mount up and Harte and her team struggle to prioritise their work - but a second disappearance has them scrambling to find connections before there is another murder.

I'm already bought into this series and like the character of DI Gina Harte - she is a likeable character and I also like the fact that she is a strong older women (she has a grown-up daughter) who is in control. Her relationship with her team is positive and (mostly) problem-free, which is great as the focus is on the investigation rather than the police team. The team themselves are often not particularly distinctive, so it was brilliant that one of them got a more important role in the plot this time around.

The plotting itself is cleverly done - there's always lots happening and plenty of red herrings to fall for. In fact, this series seems to be getting more tense - the sections narrated by Meredith were really quite creepy and kept me on the edge of my seat! I read this book really quickly as I couldn't wait to find out the next twist.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend this for readers who love police procedurals, especially if a female lead is a draw for you (as it is for me). I'd suggest you start at the beginning of the series really, to fully appreciate the strength of DI Harte, but this would be fine as a stand alone.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and the author, for this ARC of The Broken Ones, number 8 in the Gina Harte series. I really enjoyed this. It’s a perfect twisty, turny, read, with lots of possible villains. In fact it’s so cleverly written at one stage I even got one of the victims wrong as you are presented with a choice of two. You are led down lots of false paths, a range of characters with lots to hide, though not all of it relevant to the case in hand and all the while the subplots simmer beautifully below.
Gina seems in a slightly better place this time, not as angst ridden as we’ve seen her about her past. She’s still at a crossroads in her personal life but that very much takes a backseat as the book concentrates more on the main plot. The beauty of this being we know the subplots got lots more to give in the future!

Wow another fabulous book from this author, I just love Gina Harte and her colleagues so well written with a great story line and characters.

I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end, just brilliantly addictive and I loved every page.

I can thoroughly recommend this book as always and thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for another fantastic read.

The Broken Ones is book number 8 in the Detective Gina Harte series by Carla Kovach and there are no signs of this particular police crime series running out of steam as another fast paced and page turner has been written

Definitely recommended

Since I discovered this series i have been a huge fan and regularly shout about it from the rooftops. Everytime a new book comes out I religiously drop anything im doing (including any book im currently reading) and settle in. This installment was no different.

Everytime I pick up the new D.I Gina Harte book I am always so worried in what Carla can do to top the last one. Because they get better and darker as the series goes on. But low and behold she has done it again!

The case that is handed to the team in this book is gruesome, creepy and everything you love in a book of this genre. This book had me on the edge of my seat, heart in my mouth and sweat pouring out of me from nerves and apprehension of what was going to happen and how it would all play out.

Carla has this expertise to throw in these left field twists that just keep coming. I never suspect the perpetrator and always seem just as surprised as the team.

Once again I will be anxiously waiting to see what happens next and will look forward to seeing how the author can top this one.

This is book 8 of the DI Gina Harte series. It’s not necessary to read the other books before this one, each book works well as a stand-alone.
Ambers body is found in the park, her lips have been superglued shut, ligature marks around her wrists and feet. Gina and the team are called out to investigate. There are so many unexplained things in the lead up to this girls demise that makes this a very complex case indeed!
When the killer has a failed attempt at abducting another girl, it becomes a race against time for the team to solve the case before he strikes again.
There’s something about Carla’s writing that draws me in, she writes strong female characters so well. The chapters are nice and short, which makes me think ‘just one more chapter’ over and over again until I’m half way through the book and have no idea where the time went! With so many twist and turns weaved through the story, I found myself frequently changing my mind about who the killer was... right up until the reveal, and even then I was gobsmacked!
A fast paced, captivating read from start to finish. The books in this series just get better and better!
thanks to #net galley for my arc #thebrokenones

Addictive Reading 👀

Rewind ten years, endeavoring not to be heard by their mother, he finds his sister dead in her bed. After keeping the peace for soo long, for his sister, his grief takes ahold of him.

Now, Amber preparing to go out on a date, on leaving stops to help, someone she believes to be in need of help, realizing when it's too late, she's the one in trouble... and so it begins. A body is found and another woman goes missing.

Another of the Detective Gina Harte series, if you've not read any of the previous books in this collection, it won't affect your reading of the book. Overall great read, told from various perspectives, mainly Gina's, the perpetrator and victims. Got to the stage I couldn't wait to get to the end just to see who did it.

DI Gina Harte and her team are back and I, for one, am very pleased they are.
The author knows exactly how to construct a story in order to keep the readers guessing. She has filled a basket ( a bit like Little Red Riding Hood but in this case full of baddies instead of goodies 😉 ) and she feeds us little snippets of information about them.
My head was spinning. I thought it was A, but was it not too obvious? Maybe B? Too obvious too? Or C, D,… I could not make up my mind. It could have been each and everyone of them.
By revealing some secrets, the police were able to scratch the names of their list, slowly but surely. Only one name left and as usual they are being chased by a ticking clock. Will they arrive on time in order to save the latest victim from the clutches of the killer?
Once again lives are ruined, innocent people are killed because someone felt that ‘What will people say?’ is more important than the well being of their own flesh and blood.
A great book, but that not news. Every book in this series is finger licking good. 5 stars.

Thank you, Carla Kovach and Bookouture

Firstly I must say that I love the characters in this series. Gina is one of my favourite detectives and I love her back story as well as her relationship with Briggs. The other police characters are like old friends too, I wish there was a Mrs O’Connor in my background. However, I am getting fed up with the killer’s POV taking up nearly half of the book. I like the detectives to discover the who and why.

As university student Amber Slater prepares for her evening out she is excited to be finally meeting the guy she'd liked on a dating site even if it is snowing heavily and forecast to get worse. Unfortunately she has no idea just how bad its about to get.

While taking down the details from Amber's housemate after she failed to return home DI Gina Harte is notified about the discovery of a body; Amber won't be returning home ever again. With no evidence of what happened to Amber after she left to catch the bus Gina is struggling to find any witnesses to help with her investigation. No one has a bad word to say about the young woman but everyone is keeping secrets and then another student disappears and Gina knows she is in a race against an invisible killer with very little help coming her way.

Once again Carla Kovach has written an entertaining, taughtly executed, murder mystery with some seriously creepy antagonists. Set in a snowy, wet, and misty environment the inclement weather adds to the tension in some areas while being almost the antithesis of the crimes being committed in others. Gina is still trying to sort out her private life and there were times when she needed a good shake but hopefully things will move in that area next time!

This is a very good series which delivers every time. I had no idea whodunnit which is always a good thing unless the culprit is totally unrealistic, which didn't happen here. Added to this were the other creepy individuals who were forced into the light as the investigation continued showing how little we actually know about those we regularly come into contact with.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an entertaining addition to an excellent series.

Detective Gina Harte just doesn’t stop, she is investigating what happened to a young girl who went missing. One missing girl leads to further crimes and her team will soon be on a race against time.
I love this series and the storylines never disappoint. If you have read them all then you see how the characters have evolved and the bonds created within the team.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

WOW....what a book, another fab one by the amazing Carla, each of her books are amazing but am sure each one gets more better.
This book had me turning the pages till the early hours when I told my self just one more chapter..yeah right, I could not put it down. So many twists and turns, a few times I thought I’d figured it out but nope not till the very end, I wish I could give more than 5 starts cause it’s so well deserved and more, a great read and am so looking forward to the next one.

I was thrilled to see the next case of DI Gina Harte was available and immediately started reading it. I love Carla's writing style, the plot is always solid and the characters are very well written with a lot of strong female characters. I particularly enjoyed getting to know Gina's colleagues more (previous books focused more on Gina's personal story).

I highly recommend The Broken Ones as well as all the other books in this series to anyone who enjoys a good crime fiction.

Thank you to the publisher who kindly provided me with an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
