It's hard to get a proper read on a book from only the first chapter, but what I did read was compelling. I've read one Neuvel book before (as an audiobook), and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this one.

It's tricky to form an opinion of a book based on just the opening pages - however, I'm a big fan of Sylvain Neuvel's other works, and the sample chapter for A History of What Comes Next drew me in just as quickly. The writing style is really engaging, and I'm intrigued to see what happens next. I already have the book on pre-order, but am now eagerly waiting for March 4th!

I have only read one other book by Sylvain Neuvel and what strikes me, even with that limited experience, about this new novel is how much the writing style has matured. This opening chapter is really compelling, as most novels set within WWI or WWII often are, and show a nice flavour of what to expect.

If I had been browsing in a bookstore and had picked this up and flicked through the first chapter, much to the disgust of the booksellers, no doubt, I would have certainly wanted to (and do want to!) read more.

These first few pages will definitely keep you entertained. We have some historical background and our protagonist, Mia, seems a nice girl who is involved in a mission to obtain secret information.
The author style of writing is really direct, with some descriptions along the way but action seems to prevail. Will be keeping tabs on this one.

The extract from the opening of A History of What Comes Next is a fast-paced beginning to what seems like an intriguing story. This section has rapid world-building through the eyes of a teenage girl as she travels through a ravaged Germany in the final moments of the Third Reich. Her mission is related to the race to ensure the loyalties of the men who in the future will fuel the 'space race'.

I found the first person style easy to read and allowed for the character to develop quickly over the course of a few pages. I look forward to reading the rest of the book upon its release and finding out what Mia's real mission is or even who she is...

A short except but an intriguing concept. The authors writing style took a bit of getting used to but, from this short example provided, feels like it would make for an enjoyable, full read.

An interesting alternate universe style plot line that looks set to be an interesting read for those who enjoy this genre.

I have never previously been a fan of anything relating to war fiction due entirely to never having found any that felt accessible, yet somehow Sylvain Neuvel has managed to hook me in. Like his other works, this excerpt was easy to read and it quickly becomes intriguing.

The book instantly throws you in to the story, setting the scene through a letter that enables the scene to be set quickly and give a good taste for how the book will unfold.

I can imagine this will be a very quick read and you can rely on Neuvel to have incredibly thought through and through provoking sci fi premises. I will be preordering a copy.

I found the preview of A History of What Comes next by Sylvain Neuvel intriguing in its hybridity of contemporary language and a historical setting. The protagonist’s voice is also entertaining, sarcastic and sharp. I have no idea where the plot will go at this point, but I’d be interested to keep reading.

My opinion on the first few pages of "A History of What Comes Next" by Sylvain Neuvel.

Intrigued. This is the word I would use to describe my view of this book so far. I have only had access to the first 22 pages so I cannot give a fair and thorough review yet, however the themes approached have peaked my interest.

It is clearly mixing historical information, so far on World War II and the V-2 rocket Wernher von Braun worked on, with fantasy on how and by whom Mr. von Braun was brought back to the United States of America. If Sylvain Neuvel sticks to historical data, this 19 year-old Mia we get to meet in this first chapter should indeed be successful in her mission to bring Mr. von Braun back, but how??

I am not 100% sure I enjoy the writing style but I am definitely keen to read more of it.

I really love when authors links their works to music, I truly think the two compliment each other so well and deepen the reader's emotions whilst reading. Therefore, I followed Sylvain's suggestion to go onto Spotify and listen to the "take them to the stars" playlist. I thoroughly enjoyed it

I am only giving 3 stars for now as I would need to read more of this book to rate it fairly.

A very short extract, but enough to convince me that the book is fast paced and well written. I want to find out what happens with Mia and her dangerous mission with Wernher von Braun!

This book is on my tbr but I wanted to read the excerpt. This was only one chapter but I definitely going to read the first book. Also, I loved the chapter titles are song titles and there is a playlist that we can listen to while reading the book.

Such an interesting excerpt! I can't wait to read the entire thing. But there is not enough in this part to create a real review. I'm still interested in the whole book, of course.

Very interesting first episode. I love the way Neuvel writes his stories and presents the plots. I am dying to read the full book.
