You come home to find your daughter gone and her stuff gone with her. It looks as if she has runaway...but looks can be deceiving.
Jessica Moore goes into her seventeen year old daughter's room to find her and her belongings missing. When she reports this to the police, they say it appears that Wyn has runaway. A year has gone by when Jessica is woken by urgent messages from Wyn.

Can Jessica find her daughter before it's too late? Who can Jessica turn to and trust when the next text that comes in states that her daughter's abductor wears a badge?
I've ready many great books but oh my! This one has climbed up on my list, I will definitely be recommending to all my thriller loving friends! This story was beautifully written; The author really thought out every detail and planned everything perfectly. Just when you might think "That doesn't line up" or "I know what's going to happen next", you're wrong. There were so many twists and turns I felt like I had whiplash! I can't wait to read more of Avery Bishop's work!
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Single Mom Jessica Moore's 17-year-old daughter, Bronwyn, "Wyn," goes missing, and the police assume she's run away from home. A year has gone past, and Jessica refuses to give up searching for Wyn when she receives several text messages from Wyn's mobile phone begging her for help. Wyn doesn't know where she's being held or who her captor is. She implores Jessica not to contact the police because she thinks her captor is a police officer and is terrified he is planning to kill her.

Jessica is no longer sure who to trust. Her desperate search becomes more dangerous as she makes some chilling discoveries.

This story has a slow start that builds up to twists and turns that kept me turning pages. The story is told from Jessica's point of view in the present and Wyn in the past and pivots around a pep rally held at Wyn's school.

I felt the back-and-forth POV went on a little too long but also had plenty of cliffhangers to keep you engaged. The fear felt by the panicked mother, Jessica, is palpable as she experiences a parent's worst nightmare.

As with many suspense novels, plausibility can be dubious, but it did not detract from the wild ride this book takes you on. It kept me guessing all the way through with enough shady characters, high school mean kids, and suspicious behavior to keep it interesting.

When Jessica’s seventeen year old daughter goes missing, everyone tells her she ran away but she has never believed it. Now, one hear later she feels she has information to prove she is in trouble.

I liked the multiple perspectives and the multiple timelines in this one. It was done really well and in a way that you learn a bit more each time and it just keeps building on itself until all is revealed. The ending and finding out what happened was far-fetched and unrealistic to me, but sometimes that’s just how it is with the genre. If you don’t mind suspending belief, this will be a quick entertaining thriller to take to the beach this summer

“But the problem with brave faces is that they don’t last forever; eventually they fade, and the pain and fear beneath peak through.”

One Year Gone comes out 8/10.

Her phone buzzes in the middle of the night, and when she picks it up, she reads a text that says, "mom." Her heart quickens and she nearly drops her phone, because her daughter disappeared a year ago...

When Jessica's daughter, Bronwyn, disappears without a trace, her world crashes down around her. Her nightly glass of wine becomes a bottle, or two, or three, and loneliness crushes her every day in her daughter's absence. In the last year, police have concluded that Bronwyn ran away from home, but Jessica is relentless in her search for her daughter. When she receives a string of texts from her daughter, saying that she's scared and that her captor is an officer of the law, she turns to the very few people she trusts, including her ex, Bronwyn's father. From there, the race to find Bronwyn is on, especially after reading a chilling text... "i think he's going to kill me."
Right from the prologue, this book was nearly impossible to put down. I just had to know what was going on! I loved slowly discovering all of the character's secrets and the events leading up to Wyn's disappearance, and everything that transpired afterwards. This novel was full of revelations, twists, turns, and deep, dark secrets. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a dark and thrilling read!

A mystery/thriller about a missing teenager, and her mother left behind trying to pick up the pieces a year later

Did 17 year old Wynn run away like the police say she did? When her mother Jessica Moore starts to get texts from her daughter asking for help a year later, she begins to question everything she thought she knew.

When I started reading One Year Gone I questioned some of the low ratings, because I thought it started quite strongly! I was intrigued by the interesting premise, and felt for Jessica as he tried to figure out if her daughter did run away, or if it was something more sinister. It seemed a quick and entertaining read! However, it soon started to unravel...

Firstly, the writing began to slowly irritate me, and by the second half I was skim reading the overly detailed description, which took far too long to over explain things-I think it needs a really good edit! There was also way too much looking back at the MANY characters involved the year before, when I wanted to find out what was happening in the present storyline.

I feel like this book would've been better marketed at American YA readers. Wynn's chapters in particular, delved into the town's teenager's lives, looking at bullying, mean girls/boys, crushes and small town footballers and cheerleaders. This has been so over done now, and the characters here felt like stereotypes of the American teenager to me. Are they really like this? They felt like caricatures! Urgh! I am too old to be reading about spoilt American footballers and mean girl cheerleaders, and have seen it way too many times!

None of the characters were particularly likeable! Wynn felt bland, and I didn't really feel an urgent need to find her, (cold hearted I know ☹) and Jessica, an alcohol dependent bar owner (real good career choice there..) irritated me! As for the other characters, the less said, the better!

The last 20% made me roll my eyes so hard because it was all so unrealistic, unbelievable, dramatic and over the top! I just did not buy that ending or explanation at all! I was kind of relieved when it finished, although the epilogue made me want to hurl 🤣🙈

Lastly, is anyone else sick of the villain(s) just conveniently confessing all to the main character like in a cartoon?!

So sadly, although this started out fairly entertaining, it ultimately disappointed me. But if you enjoy reading about the mean girl/boy trope, and don't mind it reading like a YA, then give it a go!

One Year Gone by Avery Bishop

A year has passed since Jessica Moore's seventeen year old daughter, Wyn, disappeared. It looks like she may have run away and at her age, not much was/is going to be done to find her, despite Jessica's gut feeling that her daughter did not walk away from her life. Then, Jessica starts getting text messages from Wyn, begging for help because she's been in captivity for the last year.

The story is told with numerous timelines. There is NOW and then there are various dates leading up to the last time that Wyn was seen and through the time afterwards. The flashbacks aren't in order and they are seen though they eyes of many characters. Sadly, Jessica has had a drinking problem, continues to have a drinking problem, and she is running into brick walls when she tries to talk to people she is sure know more than they will say.

Wyn has been severely bullied at school but she's strong and won't bend under the bullying. As her best friend became embedded in the "In" crowd, they continued their friendship, which just made the other "In" teens bully Wyn more. Then Wyn's best friend is killed and Wyn knows it wasn't an accident. Thus triggers Wyn's day of very bad decisions, the day of the pep rally, and by that night, Wyn is never seen again.

The story is so long winded, each sentence seems long winded, and there are so many characters in the story, with it's alternating timeline and POVs, that reading it wore me out. I was so happy to be getting closer to the end of the story when it feels like we have a revolving door of characters and revelations popping out as if I'm at some carnival fun house. One reveal/twist after another, each one piled on top of the other, it was all too much for me. I'm so glad the story is over.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.

This book was promising from the write up and did not fail to deliver. I am new to Avery Bishop and look forward to more fast paced mysteries. The book captivated me from the start and the ending did not disappoint though I do not wish to disappoint others. Many thanks to Netgalley.

This is my first book by Avery Bishop and I enjoyed it. This is a fast paced thriller with a few good twists that I didn’t see coming. Would recommend for fans of thrillers/mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had never read anything by this author before, so I was hopeful, based on the description. I was absolutely thrilled to read it! The dual timeline was easy to follow and I really did not expect it to end the way it did! I will most definitely be seeking out other books by this author and I hope to enjoy them at least as much as this one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Avery Bishop, and Lake Union Publishing for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a wild ride. It’s hard to say much about the storyline of this one without giving things away. The book was meticulously written and the story had me captivated and sucked in from the prologue. I thought this had the perfect amount of twists and turns to keep me guessing until that final twist at the end.

You can pick up a copy of this gem on 8/10/21! It really is a summer must read.

Is it Wyn? Jessica is shocked and thrilled when a text arrives from her daughter, who disappeared a year ago. No one but Jessica- not her father and not the police- think it's really the 17 year old. Jessica, however, has to find out the truth, even if it puts her in danger. While this is meant to be a thriller (and it is), it's also a portrait of a mother's determination. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. No spoilers from me but know that this one has a big twist!

Wow, what a dark and twisted little story. I was completely drawn in and read this all in one sitting. I had a lot of guesses along the way and, honestly, had a lot of the answers but I trusted nothing! The suspense was well drawn out, the pacing well done. At first I wasn't sure if the back and forth between past Jess and past Wyn along with current Jess was going to work, but in the end, I love how the storied played out with the future bringing up the past, and then reading through the moment. It really brought it all out and kept me enthralled. I loved this one.

I also love the cover, now that I know.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

One year after her 17 year old daughter Wyn (Bronwyn) disappeared Jess receives some alarming text messages from her.

Mom…..help me…..I think he’s going to kill me.

At the time of her disappearance it was believed Wyn had run away so the police response was not perhaps what it could have been. Now, Jess isn’t taking any chances, she will pull out all stops to find her daughter.

That’s pretty much the story. It is told from Jess’s POV in the present and past after the PEP rally and Wyn’s POV in the time leading up to the PEP rally, which is the night she disappeared. I have no idea what a PEP rally is but it’s held at the high school and is something to do with sport, I think. Poor Wyn had been struggling, particularly since the death of her best friend Taylor whose car slammed into a tree some weeks ago. Wyn aspires to be a singer-songwriter but, because she is not in the cool group at school, she cops a bit of flack for the songs she posts to her You Tube channel. But Wyn knows something about the night Taylor died and she plans to expose it in a tribute song to her friend at the PEP rally.

I won’t say anymore but it’s not a particularly innovative story. Like the author’s previous book, which I really enjoyed, it goes straight for the mean girls (and boys) trope and it is starting to wear a bit thin. I agree with other reviewers who though the chapters narrated by Wyn sounded very young adult and this is not a genre I go for. Apart from being too old for it, I find it all a bit over the top.

I was able to relate somewhat to Wyn as I was never in the cool group at school either but it never bothered me. I had my own group. Jess was quite relatable as well. The other characters though were various shades of devious. And the ending did not work for me - it was so melodramatic and over the top, it just spoiled what could have been a story full of pathos. I can’t imagine that level of cover up happening in real life. It was sad too but would have worked better for me without the melodrama. I mostly enjoyed reading it (when I wasn’t rolling my eyes) but it certainly wasn’t memorable. Thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for providing a free copy which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

First I want to say that I INHALED this book. The writing was so easy to follow and the mystery of what happened was interesting that I couldn’t stop reading 😍. I haven’t had that happen to me in a long time.

I felt that this is a book that every parent fears. While I’m not a parent I had no issues following along with the grief and heartbreak.

I was able to guess a few things about the twist but not enough to ruin the ending for myself. I was constantly rethinking what I was reading and trying to figure out who I could trust.

I really enjoyed this book and thrillers fans will as well!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Thank you Netgalley and Avery Bishop for the ARC of One Year Gone
This book was fantastic, and I want another novel. Very well written, gripping novel . Luckily there are other books by this author that I have not read
Jessica is a mom of 17 yr old Bronwyn, she went missing a year ago. Jessica owns a restaurant with her ex husband, she also drinks too much. The story is read from different perspectives and alternates between present and a year ago. We learn of the events that take place leading up to Bronwyn going missing and Jessica taking the investigation into her own hands. She is shocked to find out what really happens, there are so many twists and turns but the author manages to keep us on track and able to follow the events and the characters.
Honestly I could not put this book down, I found it gripping, a great read. This is the first book I read by this author. I'm surprised by the not so great reviews and would like to read her other novels.

I was so surprisingly caught off guard by how much I enjoyed this book. Obviously I was hooked right off the bat but I loved seeing the story unfold through the POVs of Jessica and Wyn, and enjoyed the unique timeline layout of the perspectives -switching between the present, the lead up to Wyn’s disappearance and the days immediately following. I loved seeing the stories revealed in pieces and couldn’t put it down until I knew what happened. And I can’t say anything else 😶 😨😱😳
