I love art instruction books but many of them are just too technical for me. This one was exactly what I was looking for, with clear instructions and gorgeous step-by-step photos of how to use watercolors to paint all kinds of items from nature. As a homeschooling mom of 5, I've always sought out books that can be used by kids and adults alike. Now that our family has purchased a historic church that we're converting into an arts center for the community (that sounds fancier than it is -- the church cost us slightly more than a used car and it currently has no heat or running water), we have been stocking it with donated art supplies, musical instruments, sewing and quilting materials, etc. We've had lots of art and music books donated but this may be one that I'll purchase for the painting area. It's such a beautiful and helpful book.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

A great book for beginners with easy-to-follow steps for painting a variety of objects from nature, such as leaves, ferns, flowers, stones, and even a few animals. At the start of the book, the author explains the different techniques needed for various effects, and the materials required.

The narrative is simple and chatty, and each step is clearly explained so that anyone can follow, with some handy hints as well. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to learn the basics of how to use watercolours.

This is a beautiful guide to painting!

But as a beginner it's also very intimidating. There's helpful information about sketching and adding details to identify and paint nature. A lot of the step-by-step pictures are high level and require a level of skill to replicate, so it can be hard to approach. That being said there are nice tips and lots of examples. There are guides to individual plants but not really steps showing how to combine them for a scene. There's also a lot of jungle flora and fauna when I was hoping for more forests.

Overall it's a good book for people who are already confident with their watercolor skills.

This is a nice guidebook. I gives broken down instructions on how to paint in watercolor specific items found in nature, usually in 3-5 steps. Like all similar books it includes a beginning section on tools and paint colors. Some of the compositions shown with the elements you create were pretty great, and with the book made me feel like i could create something similar.

A lovely watercolour book for beginners needing some guidance and inspiration to start them on their way to painting nature.

There are a lot of books out there about watercolour and nature and while this one might struggle to stand out amongst them all, it’s nonetheless a good book to pick up with well arranged and clear information sections for tools, materials and techniques. There’s enough variety in the guides to keep you interested in painting different things and the steps are explained clearly making them easy for a beginner to follow.

I do wish the artist had shown how to combine the individual pieces to create a scene of sorts as there were a few images in the book like this but they had no explanations attached to them. I also think the animal section of the book was unnecessary and that the pages could have been used to focus on more flora with possibly a different book focusing on fauna but I recognise a lot of people might like the mix of the two subject matters.

Overall, I think this is a nice book and while it might not stay in your collection for long if you advance in your painting, there’s a lot of good skills for beginners to learn in it to get them started.

A gorgeous and wonderful instructional book for nature painting in watercolor! This book gives a straightforward, but detailed overview from needed materials, techniques, and a variety of amazing projects. Stunning, colorful, step-by-step paintings accompany all of the projects. Each chapter focuses on a different element of nature including: flowers, trees, birds, etc. A perfect guide for watercolor artists looking to sharpen their skills!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

Lovely leaves, blossoms, trees and forest creatures are the main subject for this book. The projects are easy and I think beginners would enjoy this book! It’s amazing to watch watercolor blend and seep, and this artist uses that to her advantage with the simple floral and fauna included here. I wish she had a few more examples of how she uses the individual items in her illustrations as a whole, but maybe that will be saved for another book.
