What better way to be introduced to the world of Georgette Heyer than by the simply wonderful narration of Tanya Reynolds. Listening to her was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. Her interpretation brought the characters to life in such a way that I felt as if I were watching a play. She expertly conveyed the irony, tongue-in-cheek humour and emotional drama of the story – and her accents and voices were superb.

April Lady was a wonderful first glimpse of Heyer’s regency romances – the narrative spirals from seemingly trivial matters into a full blown drama in an engaging whirlwind of mistakes and misunderstandings until all seems utterly lost. But Heyer’s reputation proceeds her, and of course all comes right in the end – though one is left guessing till the final chapters…

A wonderfully warm-hearted story of love, friendship and family – spiced with period gossip and scandal! – set against the backdrop of regency London. Perfect comfort reading.

Nell, not long married to her husband Lord Cardross, finds herself in a bit of a pickle when she overspends on her dress budget after lending some money to her feckless brother, and has to find a way to pay off her modiste without letting him know - but small deceptions becomes ever more knotty as one thing leads to another.

I absolutely loved this story. The period detail and language really brought it to life, and the narrator does a great job of giving different voices to the different characters when she reads them. It was witty and engaging and I enjoyed it immensely.

I discovered Georgette Heyer when I was a student, Her regency romances were an absolute delight and the best distraction from academic texts.. This was my first return to her work since those days and I found the same lovely comedy - a bit like a less serious Jane Austen. This is the story of Nell, a young and beautiful young woman who is married to Cardross in what she perceives to be a marriage of convenience. It is also the story of Nell's brother Dysart who is a bit of a lad, and Cardross' sister Letty who will do anything to achieve her desires. The story is funny, full of mishap/ missed chances. and misapprehensions! I greatly enjoyed my return to Georgette Heyer. The narrator had a lovely clear voice, however I found it much harder to listen to a Heyer novel than to read it and this surprised me. I could not get into the swing of it to start with and found it a little fast. I wasn't sure about the voicing of the male characters and I think that this was in part due to the very archaic language the male characters seemed to use - this sounded particularly awkward. However, I did really enjoy my return to Heyer and will definitely be revisiting some of my favourites. With thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House UK Audio for a digital copy of this lovely book.

This only hit the OK mark for me. I just wasn't that engaged in the plot or the characters. I didn't like how both of the main female characters were portrayed as a bit useless, while the male characters had to solve all of their problems for them. I also didn't find the main romance believable at all, and so I wasn't really attached to it at all.

That being said, I did like the writing style in general, so perhaps another Heyer would be better for me. The narrator was good.

Having been introduced to Georgette Heyer and worked my way through her catalogue of books many years ago, I was keen to try an audiobook version. The narrator of this book is excellent and brings the book to life in a vibrant way, more so than the written version.. I will certainly look out for more of the books narrated by her in the future. This has also made me wish to reread some of Georgette Heyer’s novels.

Not sure if class this as a romance as there is very little romance in the book. A historical comedy for sure because it was hilarious and in that, I found the characters endearing and so I did find that I felt for their silly misunderstandings and struggles.

It isn't quite the historical romance I was expecting but still a sweet and enjoyable romance and I very much enjoyed the audiobook, Tanya Reynolds did a grand job.

I’d like to thank the publishers and netgalley for an audio arc of this in exchange of an honest review.

Until recently I’d never heard of georgette heyer, but it was entirely through chance I stumbled across her first novel, the black month. Remembering the name, I then had to request this when I saw it hoping to try out some delicious regency novels.

I wasn’t disappointed, this story is charming and heartwarming and absolutely hilarious.
There’s nothing more I can say because it’s really just lovely. Perhaps if you’re unfamiliar with the uk and regency period some stuff may be a trifle confusing but overall it’s a wonderful tale.

I highly recommend, especially with this narrator who was utterly delightful and perfect.

Given that I have decided to read lots of Regency Romances this year as a Guilty Pleasure... I was looking forward to some Heyer, but this was in no way even in the same league as the other book I had read previously.

Absolutely no chemistry between our couple, a messy scenario and wholly unlikable secondary characters. It passed the time but did not enthrall me which is a real shame.

The narrator was very good but could not lift this above mediocre

I loved this audiobook, a lush writing style, two endearing love connections and a completely irrational central conflict, perfect escapism.

This was a great introduction to Georgette Heyer and I look forward to indulging in more of her regency romances. Tanya Reynolds was great casting, she captured both the tone of the period and the charm of Heyer's characters.

This story focuses on the relationships of a woman and her sister and the family she married into. I wouldn’t call it a romance story; it is a CV period drama and relevant at the moment with the popularity of “Bridgerton” and other similar dramas. I found the first couple of chapters to be slow, but then it picked up pace well as soon as I understood the characters. I noticed a few audio issues with long pauses and bits that needed further audio editing. Overall, a good story. I’d give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5,

I most Georgette Heyer’s books in my teens and loved them and am reading them again now and loving them all over again.
The opulence that Georgette Heyer draws from her pen is exquisite, the language she uses just divine. And with it she transports us to a world long gone.

Romance is timeless and Georgette Heyer is the absolute queen of timeless so put the Coronavirus on the shelf for a bit and immerse yourself in the lives of Nell, Cardross and Dysart and enjoy.

I was lucky enough to be sent an Audio book of April Lady in exchange for an honest review, I thoroughly enjoyed it, the narration was just right. Thanks for the opportunity to revisit the decadence and beauty that is Georgette Heyer.

I *love* Georgette Heyer's witty romances but I'm afraid this one is far from her best: the plot relies on farcical miscommunication between the married couple at it's heart, and a rollicking romp as a sub-plot that involves a missing necklace. Nell is one of Heyer's innocent heroines, married at 17 to a man who acts more like a father than a husband as he tells her off and she fears him. All is settled at the end in this comedy of errors but there isn't the humorous dialogue and chemistry of lovers that Heyer does so well elsewhere.

That said, this is wonderfully read and makes for a gently entertaining listen - ideal before-bed audio book.

Swoon worthy, farcical Georgian drama. The majority of which could have been resolved if only the characters were honest and talked to each other.
April Lady was good but personally I would have preferred fewer "Good Gods" and other frequent exclamations though and the constant misunderstandings got a bit tedious at times.
This was my first Georgette Heyer and while it was quite enjoyable and a passable introduction to her oeuvre, I get this feeling that some of her other books are better.
I listened to Penguin's audio version of this story and my narrator notes are that Tanya Reynolds performed it very well.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this title. This was my honest review.
