Dan Abnett's post-apocalyptic saga has been one of the true stand-outs in British sci-fi comic, 2000AD of recent years and this impressive audiobook which incorporates the vocal talents of the likes of Nina Sosanya, David Warner and Richard Armitage brings the story vividly to life.

The future of humanity is in doubt in this atmospheric adaptation of Dan Abnett’s comic series. The earth has been abandoned and all that’s left of the human race is crammed on board undersized space stations where life is fraught and the stability of what is left of society balances on a knife edge. Bad news, then, that cult activity is on the rise and all seems in danger of toppling over the edge.

I was underwhelmed by this series, on the whole. Without any familiarity with the original graphic novels, I was lured in by an interesting enough premise and a stellar cast. The pace was slower than one might have hoped and, at points, the action and plot difficult to decipher.

Nina Sosanya is a firm anchor through the drama’s three segments as Bridget, a security agent investigating the patterns of shady cult activity. David Warner is a standout when he is introduced towards the drama’s climax, sinister and psychotic in every syllable.

The whole thing is wrapped up in an odd way as we are introduced to an out-of-the-blue hypothesis for what has actually been going on. As far as I can recall, it isn’t alluded to beforehand and appears so suddenly than it trips up the denouement. It’s a flat note on which to end.

The drama has style, with music evocative of previous eras of sci fi drama, and deals with some intriguing ideas, yet fails to convince the listener of the stakes at play. Enjoyable enough, but lacking in momentum.

I am ashamed to admit that despite being a fan of Dan Abnett I have never read Blink!! In keeping with Dan’s work in WH I admit to heresy 😉 to listen to this is quite unique, a great cast of characters brought to life by some very talented narrators, would I recommend this? Unreservedly
