The book kept me interested in finding out what had happened to Evelyn and I enjoyed her side being written in letter form. The end of the book had a couple of good twists. Unfortunately, I did not like the main character, Hannah. She is self-indulgent, selfish, and reckless with the feelings and lives of the people around her. Constantly reading about her self-pity in one breath, followed by her "woke" outrage in the next, got irritating after awhile and felt like I was reading a lecture on privilege rather than a story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for access to this arc.

Hannah's life is in shambles and so she goes to help her 91-year-old grandma recover from a fall in her small southern town. While working at the local newspaper she uncovers some letters written in 1935 by Evelyn. Evelyn is writing the newspaper to tell the story of how she ended up shot and paralyzed in a wheel chair. Hannah feels a connection to Evelyn and is determined to find the rest of the story and share it with the world.

I loved this book. There were moments when I did not want to put it down. I wanted to find out what Evelyn’s story was and how it would affect Hannah’s story. Hannah and Evelyn are both very relatable and have such authentic voices. The characters are all so real. The author brings the story to life with her writing and details. The book touches on so many relevant topics. This is a book I highly recommend.

This novel quickly sucked me in and I found it difficult to put it down. I loved all the twists and turns and unpredictability the author wrote into the story. I hope to read more from this author!
