The second book in the Mrs Bird series and it’s just as good as book one. I would recommend to read book 1 first to get familiar with the characters,

I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

This book is wonderful - so wholesome and light hearted, despite being set against the background of World War Two, and at times dealing with some quite sad/serious topics. The main character of Emmy is a fantastic example of a strong, independent woman (as so many women of that time would have had to become) as she highlights the plights of others! I want the author to write more, I need to know what happens to Emmy and all her friends!

The follow up to Dear Mrs Bird, Yours Cheerfully sees the aforementioned Mrs Bird handing over the reigns of Women's Friend to Mr Collins.

If you haven't read Dear Mrs Bird, I would recommend it, but it wouldn't be detrimental to reading (and enjoying) Yours Cheerfully.

Once again we meet, Emmy Lake a journalist at Women’s Friend, now in the middle of the Second World War. Her column is going from strength to strength and she finds herself attending some very important meetings at the Ministry, much to the consternation of some ‘proper’ journalists.

But Emmy’s best friend, Bunty, is grieving the loss of her fiancé and dealing with trying to heal from surviving the bomb that killed him and razed their house to the ground. Emmy must find her inner courage to help her friend through this very difficult time.

Wonderfully written.

I look forward to the next in the series!

Well I very rapidly started and then finished Yours Cheerfully and what a joy this book is! It follows on from Dear Mrs Bird and we return to Women’s Friend magazine. It is 1941 and the Government needs women to work for the war effort recruiting magazines to encourage their readers to do their bit. The lovely Emmy Lake is now writing the Yours Cheerfully column and steps up to the plate for this new challenge. When she and her friend Bunty meet a young woman called Anne who shows them the real difficulties that women war workers face, Emmy realised that she must make a choice, do her duty or help her friends.

This book has some of the loveliest characters you will meet, Emmy and Bunty have a wonderful friendship, Charles is dashing, Mr Collins is just perfect and Ruby, well Ruby is just one lady you have to meet!

Themes are covered that are still pertinent today, equal pay for women, access to childcare for working mothers, and women being just seen and heard, not as second class citizens; it appears not much has changed in 70 years. But it made me still want to shout, we stand on the the shoulders of all the women that have come before us and fought for the right for us to live as we do now ❤️

A brilliant read…Now for Mrs Porter Calling

This was my first time reading a book from the author but I am delighted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I look forward to reading more books from the writer in the future

Yours Cheerfully is a beautiful and evocative tale about the brave, resilient and compassionate women of World War II. It beautifully explores their struggle to find their place in the war effort and their unflagging loyalty to each other and the cause.

Set in London during 1941, AJ Pearce perfectly captures the wartime atmosphere. As the war encroaches upon Emmy's everyday life, she is forced to make hard decisions about her moral obligation to support the Home Front. Through the use of emotive language and delightful descriptions, Pearce captures the magnitude of the hardships faced by ordinary people in a wartime context.

The powerful relationships between Emmy and her best friend Bunty, as well as the other female characters are beautifully rendered. Throughout the book, their dynamic provides the emotional core of the narrative. As they navigate the joys and difficulties of their individual paths, the reader is continually reminded of the power of friendship and solidarity.

Ultimately, Pearce's book serves as a much needed reminder of the immense sacrifices and fortitude of the women of WWII. Through heartfelt and compelling storytelling, she tells an incredible story that will inspire generations.
Yours Cheerfully is a powerful, compelling and beautifully written tribute to the women of wartime Britain. It's a must read for anyone interested in understanding this significant period in British history.

I loved this book so much. Mrs Bird and her adventures are like a warm hug. Picking up exactly where she left off I can’t believe how quickly I fell back into the story.

Such a wonderful feel good read

I enjoyed this well enough but it wasn't as strong as the first one. It missed having as strong an antagonist as Mrs Bird and at times felt like a bit of a GCSE creative writing exercise. But it was a fairly decent piece of 'feel-good' 'chick lit' if that's your thing.

Excellent opening chapters so I bought the special edition hardback copy from Waterstones. Love this series of books.

I’m a massive fan of any Romance or historical fiction set in WWII, so picking up this book was always a no brainer for me. Such a lovely follow up story to Dear Mrs Bird, I loved revisiting with Emmy again. A story of strong female friendships and resilience! I like this slightly less than the first book, but still really enjoyed it and would recommend to others who like similar genres.

When I read Dear Mrs Bird I wasn't sure what to expect but I was surprisingly enamoured and drawn into the life of Emmy Lake. I was so pleased to hear about this sequel and even more pleased to read and enjoy it as much as I had enjoyed the first book.

While the book is ultimately a light hearted, often funny, historical novel with charming characters (something to really make you feel good and the kind of read that you can fly through), there was definitely depth to some aspects of the book. Like the first book, it focuses on real life during the Second World War and because of that we go on a journey with the characters. The first book looked at relationships and the various losses that people experience due to the war. This book takes on feminist issues such as the role of women in the workplace. While these are serious issues, it is all done against the backdrop of Emmy's own life, career ambitions and the people she meets along the way and feels positive overall as a result.

Now I am wondering whether there will be a third...

I loved this book just as much as the first in the series. So glad to have had more from Emmy and Bunty. Such amazing characters that really draw you in.

Yet again, I loved the historical side to the story; found it so interesting.

Really enjoyed the last quarter of the story in particular and loved how it all ended.

5/5- would recommend (but read the first one first!!)

Given that this book came out mid-2021 and I had an ARC… well, it was about time! When Clear Your Shit threw up the Comfort Read prompt, I knew I had to pick this one. This is the sequel to Dear Mrs Bird, and follows on in the story – having now taken over the advice column, we’re heading into the later years of WWII and focusing on the home effort – of women working in arms factories. The story is both hopeful – presenting these women’s struggles and fight for support – as well as more emotional when dealing with the reality that these women face. With their husbands still at the front and in danger, having to look after the children as well as making a living, when every day that dreaded news could come – I can’t even imagine. It’s written in the same light style, which is so easy to read and leaves you feeling optimistic.

What a bloody marvellous book. It was a jolly terrific read and I rather liked all the 1940’s phrases!! I must say Emmy and Bunty are positively remarkable. And Charles seemed a true dreamboat. it was swell to read and it will be such a gas to meet @ajpearcewrites I hope she won’t mind terribly signing my book as I have brought a physical copy as well!

I really loved Dear Mrs Bird so I was delighted to see there was a follow-up in Yours Cheerfully. This book is just lovely. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first, simply because everything goes well pretty much all the time, there’s not much in the way of tension. But this did make it a lovely relaxing read and the characters are all so charming and kind and well-drawn, it’s a pleasure to spend time in their company. I hope there are more books to come in this series.

Emmy loves her job as a wartime columnist. She likes to fight women’s rights. She isn’t afraid to tell the truth. Her best friend Bunty and Emmy try to help some factory women receive support for the war work they are doing.

All the while Emmy is courting Charles. Will a proposal be on the cards?

An exciting story of women’s rights and romance in the Second World War.
