The premise of this book drew me to it: a young woman is brought to a world where magic exists knowing nothing of her fate with only a mysterious man to protect her for she is pursued by powerful forces, lead by a vampire, trying to capture her.

I found it, however, a bit flat. The characters and the world building needed more depth. Much of the book was Sarah and Micheal traveling without the reader finding much out. The couple didn’t have chemistry; they needed more substance for there to be sparks. The flow felt stilted. This happened then this happened.

The story has potential it just needs some work.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a couple of the ARC in return for an honest opinion.

The story itself seemed optimistic, the description itself attracted me very much, but the story then disappointed me. There was not a hint of emotion in the story, the relationship between the main characters seemed forced on me. I had to force myself into reading with great difficulty

I enjoyed this story and it's interesting world but I found that it was easy to forget about and I wasn't overly drawn in by any particular character.

I do want to find out what happens to the characters but think it needs more editting, padding and cohesion to really make it a remarkable book.

This book has good bones, but honestly, I didn't finish it. As a lover of romance and fantasy, I wanted to like this book so much. I liked Sarah; I was curious to see where her storyline took the readers. I enjoyed reading about Michael and the others who hunted and followed her. It built suspense and made me want to keep reading. However, the writing in the book was very simple. It made it difficult to really sink into because the cadence of the read felt choppy. Also, the cover for the ARC has a typo. I'm looking forward to seeing this author grow because I really enjoyed her ideas for the plot and characters.

The Elementalist by S.N. Hunt is an adult paranormal fantasy in which the protagonist, Sarah, is thrust into a magical world. I was instantly drawn in by the stunning book cover and when I read the synopsis - I was sold.

Ultimately, this book wasn't for me. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it despite trying incredibly hard. The plotline doesn't make a whole lot of sense and the characters even less so. Sarah has no mind of her own, just blindly follows Micheal because she (basically) instantly falls in love with him. The dialogue between the characters is very stitled, it doesn't feel organic at all. The actual writing feels more like a report - "this happened, then this happened, then he said this, then they did that." I think there was one chapter where almost every paragraph began with "Sarah".

After reading the synopsis of the book, it doesn't sound half bad but unfortunately, the execution isn't great.

I was initially drawn to this book due to the beautiful cover art, and it sounded like the type of book I normally enjoy. I do love romance and fantasy genres, so this seemed like a great book.
However, I was a bit confused whilst reading this and unfortunately couldn't finish the book.
This was due to a few things...
Firstly, I found it hard to connect to Sarah. I think some more background on her would have helped the reader empathise a little, particularly during the scene were she was almost raped by someone she knew.
This totally came out of nowhere as well, which was quite jarring since we knew so little about him other than he was vain and a bit egotistical. This in itself doesn't mean he should or could have assaulted her, and his reasoning for it was a little thin. I've wanted you for so long etc...
Secondly, the part about the wolf spreading "his seed" over Sarah's house and in her bed was very out of the blue as well and never really amounts to anything as the story goes on, other than being such a gross beginning to a book, and I found that hard to get past, but pressed on.
Thirdly, the opening or veil into another world was such a good idea, but I didn't like the fairytale imagery of a cackling witch named Gretchen in a stone cottage...it felt off in the context of the story where so far a woman we don't know had almost been raped, plus a wolf had been sexually violating her home and stalking her as well. It felt so odd to me and nothing flowed together to make a cohesive story.
Next our poor protagonist is almost seduced by a siren she just can't resist, then magically comes to her senses. Thank goodness.
She is also inexplicably aroused by the man who more or less kidnaps her and takes her to "safety"...firstly she doesn't know this man, and she goes with him...I'm not sure Sarah is very street smart.

I tried to read on until the end, but unfortunately couldn't connect or relate to any of the characters, and really feel like some world building and background information on the characters was an absolute essential here, before any of the story kicked off. I also didn't like the rhyming riddles added in, as it was at complete odds to what amounts to a lot of sexual innuendo through this book.

I do like to be honest in my reviews, but not unkind. I would like to close by saying that I hope the author can expand on her storylines in future and give readers more to sink their teeth into before hurtling into the plot, and congratulations at thinking up what is basically the bones of what could be a truly great story.

I would like to start off by saying what I liked about the book. The bare bones story of the book, a young woman with magic who crosses into a magical world to discover her true potential, is a good story. The mythology of the world and the use of magic is intriguing, but it isn't enough to save this book.

I think the author could have really benefited from having an experienced editor review this book and assist with the many grammatical errors, awkward dialogue, and poor descriptions. It was difficult to get past the first chapter where the author repeats the same phrase several times and lacks vivid description. Not to mention the weird description of a character cumming all over the main character's home. Like wouldn't you smell that? Wouldn't your carpet be crusty? There was no point in this book that I wanted to keep reading. The idea was a good one, it was just poorly executed. I do hope that the author takes this as constructive criticism, because I do think the idea was an interesting one, it just needed a little work.

Review:

I am not even sure where to begin with this book. I have to admit that I mainly cover loved this book, I saw the cover and I thought to myself.. I love it, lets give it a read. Which is what I do with 90% of the books I read and I know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but come on I know for a fact that I am not the only one that does this. And from he description, it honestly sounded like such a good book.

But, my over all first impressions of this book was confusion, mainly because it was so strange. Everything that was happening did not make ANY sense whatsoever. There is hardly any back story and no character development whatsoever anywhere, and it just left me perplexed. I was looking for a badass female who would come into her own and stand up for herself but I was so so wrong.

Right from the get go Sarah, the protagonist, doesn’t even question Michael, her so called Guardian, when she is taken from her home and forced to travel with him. And this is straight after a traumatic experience she has. I not speaking for all females here because I know everyone is different and they react to different situations in different ways but the fact she doesn’t even question him or tries to fight her corner. She just follows him, literally NO QUESTIONS ASKED! And that is what really messes with me.

Then they are going into this new world, nothing is explained, Sarah just goes along with everything and how one minute, the characters within the story are apologising that they cannot tell Sarah anything about what is going on, (which Sarah just goes along with AGAIN) and then they are all, we are gong to tell you anyway. It was like the writer couldn’t wait to tell us everything about the story and the plot and I just kept thinking to myself, where is the mystery, the questions, the character development, where she finds all these things out for herself and develops from these things.

Please do not get be started on the romance, I wasn’t even 5 chapters in and Sarah and Michael and instantly in love. No questions asked. It was honestly so so unbelievable and farfetched. I love a good slow burn or even an enemies to lover, because I’m sorry if someone kidnapped me in the middle of the night and didn’t explain himself I would instantly be thinking, he is my enemy. They barely know each other and they all of a sudden cannot stop thinking about each other. The sex references really grossed me out and I couldn’t continue reading it. I had to stop, so this book was a DNF for me. I really did not like the plot to the story line, or the character develop and the lack of mystery.

This could have been a really good book, if it was thought out properly.

2 stars

I know, I'm dissapointed too. From the description, i thought I'd be getting an action packed story told from the point of view of a strong, bad ass female. Boy was I wrong. First of all, Sarah never questions Michael (her supposed guardian). Sure, she tries for a while, but after some time she just quits. She doesn't even try to inquire anything from anyone. She just accepts everything from Michael.
Now my second point, there is insta love. I love slow burns so this was dissapointing. They barely know each other and now can't stop thinking about the other person? Yeah no.
All in all, this book was not for me.
