Former DCI Hanlon has retired from Scotland Yard and relocated to Scotland itself. There, she has begun a private investigation service, hoping to avoid some of the violence that brought out her worst tendencies as an officer in London.

When a woman hires her to protect an online yoga trainer/influencer during a retreat on a windswept Scottish isle, it’s hard to imagine what could go wrong. Sure, the influencer had been receiving some concerning threats both via email and hand-delivered to her home. Most likely these were the work of a deranged fan, one who could hardly be deemed a legitimate threat. Hanlon can keep her employer safe, enjoy the tranquility of an island retreat, and collect a much needed paycheck.

It’s all peace and yoga until people start dying.

Alex Coombs has created a terrific protagonist in PI Hanlon. A woman with anger issues, she is willing and even eager to beat the tar out of a threatening punk who tries to assault her. She is not so willing to confront her feelings for the Glasgow cop who is equally unsure of how to approach her. Retreating to Scotland in order to avoid stress, she still finds solace in online sessions with her London therapist. Not that Scotland is a land of tranquility, when financial schemes defraud the unwary of thousands, when several people die violently without any obvious connection to each other apart from knowing the yoga instructor, and when a mysterious swami with a shady past seems to know more about Hanlon than she has revealed to anyone.

This book has a rapidly paced plot that leads from one twist to another. I can usually guess the killer well before the end of a mystery. Coombs kept me in the dark in the most satisfying way possible. At the end, when the killer is revealed, all the clues made sense and I had the “aha” moment--only to experience another twist, then yet another one. Moments in the book are quite funny, including an accidental injury that could only happen to someone associated with Hanlon. Still, by the end, several storylines are neatly tied up and we get to see a much different and more humanizing side to Hanlon. I don’t want to say “softer” or any other patronizingly sexist adjective. She might jump out of the book and punch me! But she does reveal a kinder side, one that likely was suborned to the anger issues but found some release as she dealt with some of those feelings. I look forward to seeing how some of these new aspects of her character become fleshed out in this compelling series.

I love Alex Coombs but I am not too sure about Hanlon as a private detective. he seems to somehow lose her uumph in this book. i enjoyed it but not as much as when Hanlon was a tough, no nonsense police detective.

Hanlon is back in a tense and terrifying case that will keep readers engrossed and turning the pages all through the night: Buried for Good.

Hanlon has had her fair share of challenging jobs throughout the course of her career, but when she is hired as a temporary bodyguard for famous yoga instructor Camille Anderson, she thinks she has scored her easiest assignment yet. On a remote Scottish island, there isn’t much to do and next to no opportunity for anything to go seriously wrong…or is there? Perhaps Hanlon had been a tad premature in thinking that this assignment was going to be a walk in the park.

When an attack on Camille’s life is made which has fatal consequences, it becomes abundantly clear that there is a vicious murderer on the island with a score to settle and revenge on their minds. Hanlon will leave no stone unturned to stop them in their tracks before another body is found, but is she already far too late?

The body count just keeps on rising and rising and Hanlon is slowly running out of time. Will this ruthless killer continue to slip through her fingers? Or is she going to get so close to the murderer that she will end up paying the ultimate price in her quest for justice?

Alex Coombs’ Hanlon thrillers are always a struggle to put down, but he has outdone himself with Buried for Good. A claustrophobic, chilling and compulsively readable thriller spiced with nail-biting suspense and heart-pounding intrigue, Buried for Good grabs the readers’ attention from the very first page and will keep them on the edge of their seats throughout.

I’m such a big fan of Hanlon and in this book she is once again fierce, fearless and solves this seemingly impossible crime with intelligence and aplomb.

A superb addition to his Hanlon series, Buried for Good is another top-notch crime novel by Alex Coombs.

Once again, a treat is in store with another thrilling read starring Hanlon where nothing is straight forward or easy.

This is the third instalment in the series where Hanlon is now a Private Investigator - I have to admit that I haven't read the previous two but have read the first four in the series when Hanlon was a serving Police Officer. I don't think you have to have read the first two in this particular series but I would definitely recommend reading at least the very first novel (The Stolen Child) where Hanlon is introduced and you get a real sense of who she is.

What we have here is another fast paced and enthralling read with twists and turns aplenty and a fare smattering of red herrings that keep you guessing to the end. Alex Coombs is able to put you right in the middle of the story with his excellent descriptions of the various locations and he creates interesting and compelling characters that have you hooked and reading way too late into the night.

An excellent addition to anyone's book shelf or eLibrary and I would definitely recommend any of Alex Coombs' books.

Many thanks go to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Inspector Hanlon is hired to protect a famous yoga instructor, Camille. At first, seems like an easy job, but then bodies are showing up. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect with any character, bad timing I guess.
Thank you Netgalley for this book.

Mounting Suspense....
A Scottish island retreat, a small group of guests and a killer. Another case for, the now Private Investigator, Hanlon. With a credible cast of characters, an engaging storyline and packed with atmosphere the author successfully creates a tale of mounting suspense. Compelling read.

Alex Coombs is back with the next installment of his Hanlon PI series, following former DCI Jane Hanlon as she takes on a case that at first blush looks easy. Act as a bodyguard to an internet-famous yoga instructor who’s been receiving threats. On the surface, Camille Anderson is a sweet and inoffensive person who’s been receiving ever more increasingly deadly threats. She’s frightened, but determined to go forward with a planned weekend yoga retreat she’s hosting for a select group of big-money clients.

Hanlon quickly gets pulled into a dizzying whirl of events and meets an eclectic mix of people who surround Camille. There’s Katherine O’Rourke, Camille’s business manager who has reason to blame Camille for a past tragedy; Camille’s hard-faced and much younger sister Siobhan who works as Head Chef at the yoga studio; Paul Strom, Camille’s “shaman advisor” who has uncanny predictions and makes Hanlon suspicious; and Siobhan’s sous-chef Jenny who has a habit of using sex to improve her circumstances. The retreat is at a lovely mansion on an island, so the staff and clients are the only suspects when tragedy strikes. The clients at the retreat are just as interesting! There’s Suki Bly, who idolizes Camillle to the point of doing everything in her power to be “just like her”; Oliver Drummond, a supposed financial advisor who is more bluster than sense; Loyd Travers, a semi-retired software designer who never really left the Seventies behind; Karen Ross, a sales director for a pharmaceutical company who runs marathons in her spare time, and Anna Reynolds, a talented investor.

As the death toll mounts, Hanlon finds herself reacting to situations more than proactively investigating, until the stress sends her back to her psychologist, Dr. Morgen. It’s with Dr. Morgen’s no-nonsense, blunt advice that Hanlon starts untangling the snarl of her current case, as well as the feelings she has for DI Murdo Campbell who is back in her life after a disastrously awkward date months prior. Murdo’s case is tangentially connected to Hanlon’s, he’s been seconded to the Fraud division, and one Camille’s best clients was bilked out of a large sum of money by a conman who’s been making millions off a fake investment firm.

This is the ultimate variation on a locked room mystery! There’s a little bit of everything, sex, drugs, rock & roll, mysteries, lies and oh, so many secrets! I can honestly say that I was blown away by who the antagonist turned out to be. I loved that Dr. Morgan made another appearance, normalizing that even the most physically strong people need mental and emotional support.

Buried for Good is a great mystery which kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was proved wrong and it took a completely different direction. I read a lot of mystery and thrillers and so many of them are predictable. This one wasn’t and I highly recommend it!

Newly located to an office in Lochgilphead on the west coast of Scotland and having left the police, Hanlon has set herself up as a private investigator. She hasn’t changed one bit, as a young thug from Glasgow finds to his rather bruised cost when he tries to lay a hand on her. She is approached by the manager of a famous yoga instructor, Camille Anderson, to provide protection for the woman who has been receiving threats to her life, directed towards one week in particular, next week in fact. How hard can this be, she thinks? She takes the job and heads off to Duachy House, the former hostel owned by Camille on an island near Oban where she plans to hold a retreat along with staff and five paying guests and where she should be safe. Famous last words!! A raging storm that prevents anyone from leaving or arriving at the island gives a classic “locked room” scenario as a first death occurs. Accident or murder? Could it even be a case of mistaken identity? As another death swiftly occurs, the police arrive, make an arrest and most of the guests, including Hanlon, are allowed to leave. However, Camille is not satisfied and asks Hanlon to conduct her own investigation. Will she get to the truth in time before it is buried for good?
With a great twisty plot and loads of suspicious characters, this is a very easy story to become completely engrossed in right up to the thrilling end. I have really liked Hanlon since book one, and she has progressed superbly as a character, each book getting better and better. I think I like her even more now since she has left the police as she gets more of an opportunity to use her various skills to her best advantage. This is a terrific series, and highly recommended to all. I hope there are more books to come! 5*

Buried For Good is the third instalment in the Private Investigator Hanlon series. Set in Glasgow, and a remote Scottish Island, Ex Met Detective Hanlon is enlisted as protection for famed social media influencer and internet yoga star Camille Anderson after she has received several death threats. She agrees to take the job, and finds herself setting off to remote Scottish island where Camille hosts her back-to-nature retreats.

The first week passes by with little occurring, and at this point Hanlon thinks she has landed herself a rather quiet job. But then the second week arrives, and with it a whole new host of drama when two of the group of yogi’s are found dead. It is clear that they have a killer in their midst, and with there being very limited opportunities to leave the island, those that are left there feel trapped and in imminent danger.

Now Hanlon finds herself racing against the clock to uncover who the killer is, and to keep those around her safe at the same time.

This is such a gripping story that really has you on the edge of your seat at times. The way in which Alex Coombs brings the story to life is remarkable, and you can picture the Island that the story takes place on perfectly in your mind. As I have come to expect with novels by Alex Coombs, the characters all have deep, complex personalities, and as the story progresses we learn more about each of them and get a better insight as to how they have come to find themselves in such situations.

Perfectly paced, full of suspense with an abundance of twists and turns you don’t anticipate. This is a fantastic read that had me engrossed to the very last page.

“Buried For Good” was indeed a gripping page-turner and very entertaining. It is a book that delivers what you expect and kept me guessing.

The author did an excellent job in writing the tale. From the get-go, you meet the characters surrounding Camille’s life. Like Hanlon, you start to see all the characters as potential suspects. What’s more interesting is that they all have a motive to harm Camille for what she knowingly (or unknowingly) did to them. As the story progresses, you see the list of suspects come down as they get murdered! Some of the scenes are pretty graphic and shocked me. The author did a brilliant job of throwing the red herrings where you don’t know what is happening and who is to blame.

I liked Hanlon in the lead and how she handled the case. The author also spends time with her personal life and her relationship with Murdo Campbell. I also liked the scenes where she visits her therapist to sort out the issues she faces. Even the supporting cast like Camille, O’Rourke, and Anna was interesting. But, one person who stood out for me was Strom. I found Strom to be fascinating and wished we had seen more of him. He is mysterious, mystical, and so captivating, I had no idea what his role in the story would be.

However, once I finished the story, looking back, I felt some of the character’s behaviors seemed disconnected. I am not giving away any spoilers, but it didn’t warranty their actions.

Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed “Buried For Good” and liked it much more than “Missing for Good.”

Buried for Good by Alex Coombs is a twisty mystery that surprised me. I love the misdirection the author used to make the reader think the story was heading in one direction, but surprisingly, it would turn a different way.

Alex Combs writes beautifully. The descriptions set this beautiful, atmospheric novel, and made me feel as if I was there. Scotland is a beautiful place, and Alex Combs definitely brought that to life on the page.

I enjoyed Hanlon as a main character. Her tough exterior protects all of her insecurities. She is a very well rounded, and relatable character.

Quick pacing, beautiful writing, and wonderful characters created a unique story that I really enjoyed. Check this one out.

Alex Coombs does not disappoint in this third installment of the Private Investigator Hanlon series. "Buried for Good."

Famous yoga instructor Camille Anderson is feeling under threat someone is trying to cause her harm, but who could it possibly be? She hires private investigator Hanlon for protection. An easy job? Or so Hanlon thought. As the mystery unfolds you are taken to a retreat on an island where everything appears not as they seem. Who is guilty? Who is innocent? What do they want? Hanlon will stop at nothing to get answer.

This story was epic.

I really enjoyed the element of mystery and danger in it. Coombs is a really good writer because all the events were well timed and made for an action packed page turning novel. Hanlon is a very interesting character in my opinion. She is strong and good at what she does. Since Buried for Good is the third book in the series (I only realized that after), I appreciated that it read like a standalone.

I am looking forward to reading more.

Great story! Superb writing!

The latest book in the PI Hanlon has action, self-realisation, romance and suspense. The plot is layered with many suspects, two crime threads and a cast of characters who are not what they seem.

I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but after reading the previous series where Hanlon is a police officer, I appreciated her creative character more. She is a clever and courageous woman with undoubted issues, but her many positive traits outweigh these and make her likeable.

The story takes place in Scotland on an atmospheric island, Glasgow and the rural west coast. There is a murder mystery ethos to the first part of the story, with all the suspects marooned on an island battered by severe weather. There are also elements of psychological suspense and the supernatural which keep the reader guessing.

The clues to the final reveal are all there but well hidden. The suspense building leads to a climactic ending and a positive personal conclusion.

I received a copy of this book from Boldwood Books via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Hanlon is ex-police and a loner. She’s hired to protect a yoga influencer from a supposed threat. This quasi locked island mystery reminded me a little of Ten Little Indians as I read the first third of the book. Not sure if it was a happy coincidence or an homage to Christie.

What I liked is you’ll never guess the ending, I had feelings for a suspect really early on and I’ll admit I was right, but I really can’t brag about it since I pretty much left that thought and suspected almost every character in the book and only truly ruled them out when they were offed.

I also liked that there is a secondary plot of fraud where you spend the book trying to decide if it is part of the murders or not. No spoilers from me. I loved the description of the surroundings and I wish I could live somewhere that the view out my window was as great as everywhere Hanlon seemed to visit.

The story is complex but comes across as simple. There is a lot of misdirection and twists to keep you guessing and I was engrossed in the book from start to finish and finished in just a couple of days. You should pick this one up if you like mysteries.

I have been a fan of Alex’s work for a little while now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that he has written but I am getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘Buried For Good’ and it certainly sounded like an interesting read and then some. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Buried For Good’ but more about that in a bit.
It took me no time at all to get into ‘Buried For Good’. In fact the synopsis alone was enough to grab my attention and drawn me in. When I started reading ‘Buried For Good’, I knew that I would find it exceedingly difficult to put the book to one side for any length of time. Part of the reason why I enjoyed the story so much is the fact that I quite like the character of Hanlon and I had to keep reading to see if she was able to complete her mission without too many hiccups along the way. Every time I picked the book up, I would become so wrapped up in the story that I would lose all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Buried For Good’ and I had to say goodbye to Hanlon.
‘Buried For Good’ is superbly written but then I have thought that to be true of Alex’s books in general. He certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and draw you into what proves to be a compelling story with an intriguing lead character. Reading ‘Buried For Good’ certainly felt like being on an occasionally scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I felt as though I was part of the story and that’s all thanks to Alex’s very vivid and realistic storytelling. I found ‘Buried For Good’ to be a tense and dramatic read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of the seat throughout.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Buried For Good’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Alex’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Buried For Good by Alex Coombs is the third book in the Private Investigator Hanlon series. This book is set in Glasgow and a remote Scottish Island. I jumped at the chance to join this tour as I have been part of every book that Alex Coombs has written about DCI and PI Hanlon and I have enjoyed everyone.
This book sees Ex - Met detective, DCI Hanlon being requested to provide famed internet yoga instructor and prominent social media influencer Camille Anderson with protection as she has been receiving death threats at her home from which she runs a company offering back-to-nature retreats to cleanse the soul on an isolated and remote Scottish island that can only be accessed by boat. The first week goes easily with bothing out of the ordinary and Hanlon thinks she's got a nice quiey job but that may be a little premature. The second week arrives and before they know it two members of the group of yogi’s are dead. Suddenly aware they have a real killer in their midst and knowing they can only exit the island at certain times, those there feel trapped. But Camille is the biggest danger Trapped on an isolated Island with no chance of safety should this lunatic decide to pick them off one at once. Can Hanlon protect those around her?
What an exciting and immersive book to add to the series. I have come to expect Alex Coombs to creating twists that you don't expect and in this story he has skilfully done this, all the while throwing red herrings into the book. I was so interested in what was coming next I couldn't put it down! I would say to myself "two chapters then sleep", well! That didn't happen. The spiritual and shamanic parts of the story really gave this book a slightly different slant as well and I found it really interesting to read.
Alex Coombs has described the area so well that he created a sense of place and I felt like I could have been there. The story is told from Hanlons point of view mainly and it created even more of a feeling of being there. Hanlon is well know for having a wild side, it has occasionally caused problems in the past but here we see a different side to her .
Altogether a story of lies and secrets that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you flip the pages to the ending that is an explosive one. P.I Hanlon is one of my favourite characters, I have followed her career from the beginning and love to read of her newest adentures. Roll on her next one I say!
Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the copy of the book.
