I experienced major anxiety while reading this thriller! There was so much going on between the past and present life of the main character, Mia. There were also so many times throughout this story that I just wanted to scream, “Mia, what are you doing?!” Be prepared for a wild ride with this read!
Carey Baldwin is a new author to me, but I am definitely looking forward to reading future novels from her. I also suggest reading her latest, I Know What You Did, to anyone who enjoys suspenseful thrillers as much as I do. This book was not an easy one to figure out!

Carey Baldwin’s very detailed psychological thriller has many threads contributing to its success. At times I wondered how they’d all be woven together, but, Baldwin, skilled at planning a thriller, expertly worked behind the scenes to produce her masterpiece. At times I didn’t know who to trust, and just when I thought I had it figured out, Baldwin pulled the carpet out from under me! The characters are the star in this one; multidimensional and believable (well, maybe not Detective Griffin Samuels). The anxiety rides high, the bodies pile up and nobody is who they say they are in this book.

Mia is a young woman with a sad past who has now ingratiated herself into the family of her missing coworker, Celeste. What they don't know is that Mia made an impulsive decision that might have cost Celeste her life. She ran into a group of other preschool teachers having a night out at a local pub. They halfheartedly asked her to join them but she declined. When they walked away, she found Celeste had dropped her keys. Rather than hand them over, she stuck them in her purse, getting back at the women who had once again left her out. But the next day, Celeste is reported missing, having never made it home. Mia can't believe it - she just knows that if she'd given Celeste her keys back, she wouldn't have disappeared. So she throws herself into the search, befriending Celeste's family and investigating any new lead she discovers.

While doing so, she's convinced that someone does not want her involved with this family, and she reports each new threat to the detective in charge. But because of her past, he thinks Mia is trying to use Celeste's disappearance as a way to put herself in the spotlight. Her mother vanished after locking six year old Mia in a shed. Her mother's boyfriend didn't know of her existence and when her mother never came back to get her, Mia had to literally dig her way out into the surrounding forest. She realizes now that her mother's case never got close to the publicity that Celeste's has. While she does want it looked into, she swears that she's not making anything up - someone really is following and threatening her. Is it worth divulging the truth about the keys to get the detective to take her seriously? That would surely alienate her from Celeste's family, who she feels truly care about her, a surrogate family for the one she never had. She must decide quickly, before she's the next one to disappear.

This was a good story, I didn't see the end coming which is always a pleasant surprise. Some things felt a bit off, like her lack of friends - just because she's timid and has anxiety? No one appears to outright dislike her, so it seems odd she'd be left out. And the dialogue between her and the detective is downright weird sometimes, sounding straight out of the pages of a 1940s crime magazine. She goes from anxious to ballsy too quickly for me, fluctuating back and forth throughout the story. A little disjointed, but an overall engrossing tale.

What do you do when no one see's you? That's Mia's biggest problem. She's in the background. As people around her go on with their lives Mia is coasting through hers on vague memories of a much loved mother and fears about what happened to her.

When a chance encounter with coworkers leaves Mia hurt and jealous she makes a swift decision that will alter her life.

Who can she trust? Her overprotective, paranoid Aunt? Coworkers who never gave her a second thought? The new family that's opened their home and arms to her? A detective who looks at her suspiciously?

This book is a wild ride of lost memories and new revelations.
I read it straight through and couldn't put it down.
