I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

I love a book where the main character escapes their real life and disappears somewhere cute and romantic. The Getaway is one of those books and I disappeared into Croatia with Kate!

Please note that this book is not for me - I have read the book, However I had to DNF and because i do not like to give negative reviews I will not review this book fully - there is no specific reason for not liking this book. I found it a struggle to read and did not enjoy trying to force myself to read this book.

How I loved this book, Isabelle Broom has such a marvellous way of describing places, that I couldn't help but want to visit Hvar in Croatia myself, especially if there is a man like Alex about!

Alex is a man of mystery, lives a simple life, and just always seems to be about.

Kate on the other hand is only in Croatia, to hide from a viral video and hope that her now ex-boyfriend may want to take her back if he misses her!

Kate does though help her brother, Toby with the interior design for his new hostel venture and also discovers a lot about herself in the process.

There were many moments there I was letting out audible giggles at various things in the book.

A real taste of Croatian life and truly enjoyable reading experience, I thoroughly enjoyed my time between the pages of The Getaway.

Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

A lovely summery read perfect for those that enjoy a good chic lit novel. The main storyline was a little bit predictable however, the main character was likeable and I enjoyed seeing her character progress throughout the book.

A story that contains everything needed for a get away from it all novel, a broken heart, sun, interior design, support when at your lowest and a happy ending. What more can you ask especially when you add an easy writing style that allows total immersion in the experience of avoiding the real world. Isabelle Broom is an expert in this genre and never disappoints, a totally reliable source for a ‘get away from it all’ novel. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity of reading this for an honest review.

Didn’t do it for me unfortunately. I struggled to get into it because the main character was so drippy and eventually just stopped reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written summer romance. Set in Hvar, an island I visited a number of years ago and fell in love with, the memories and descriptions of the island are spot on. A really heartwarming story, well worth a read. Loved it!

I really enjoyed this gentle read. Kate needs to disappear after becoming a viral sensation to join her brother in Croatia. Here she finds out who she is and realises her own value. She begins to question her previous decisions and asserts her independence. She meets unconventional Alex who has his own demons to conquer. Their relationship allows both of them to move forward.

Heartwarming against a beautiful backdrop.

One to be recommended.

Beautifully set in Croatia, making you want to go there! The characters are wholly believable - including a feisty cat! Couldn’t get to the end quickly enough.

When Kate proposes publicly to James at her 30th birthday party everything goes wrong. She decides to go to Croatia where her brother lives and help him refurbish the hostel he and his husband have bought. Once there she discovers not only skills she didn't know she had but a lot more besides.
A light read with a happy ending, also brilliant descriptions of Hvar and the surrounding islands.

Escapist romantic fiction does not feature much on my reading list whilst there are so many breath-taking psychological thrillers to discover, but this novel, but after several recommendations, each promoting Broom as a writer of inspirational landscapes and engaging characters, I decided to try ‘The Getaway’. I am very glad that I did. The way that Broom describes the setting (in this case, the Croatian island location of Hvar) is mesmerizing, and the female protagonist at the heart of the novel, Kate, is drawn in a sympathetic, believable manner. A female character leaving a life that is threatening to fall apart and starting afresh in a sunny location is a well-trodden literary trope, but Broom’s character Kate, who does so after a disastrous 30th birthday party, is drawn in a particularly credible and sympathetic manner and the reader learns, alongside Kate, that kindness, forgiveness and optimism can conquer most challenges. Warmly recommended, especially in pandemic times when actual journeys to breath-taking locations like Hvar are temporarily on hold. I would like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for the free ARC I received in exchange for this honest and unbiased review.

At first found it difficult to get into this book - Kate, the main character, was weak and I wanted to knock some sense into her. As the book continues she grows in character and strength. At the end she had completely turned herself around and, created a new life and found a new love - and what a delight to have a central male character who isn't traditionally drop dead gorgeous, somebody who is easy to relate to.

This was such an enjoyable read, the vivid writing and intricate details made me feel like I was right there in Croatia.
Kate has just proposed to her boyfriend James in front of all their friends and family at her 30th birthday party. It didn’t go as planned and Kate finds herself single and back in her parents house. She decides to go to her brother in Croatia to escape for a little while and give James time to miss her and realise he wants her back. In Croatia Kate goes on a journey of self discovery and finds romance where she least expected. I loved how this story was told, the characters were great and there is a bit of mystery around her new love interest which added a bit of intrigue.
The perfect summer read!

No wonder Kate wants to get away. She’s lost yet another job and been public humiliated at her 30th birthday party where a surprise proposal doesn’t quite go to plan. To make matters worse, a video of the event goes viral, and she ends up with no boyfriend, no job and no home. I’d want to get away too!

Isabelle Broom effortlessly transports the reader to beautiful Croatia. I’ve never been. I now want to go. If that gorgeous cover wasn’t enough to tempt me, Isabelle Broome’s wonderfully evocative writing certainly does! Kate’s brother Toby and his husband Filippo live in Hvar and she helps them get their hostel ready for opening, discovering a flair for interior design as she does.

Kate feels such a failure at the beginning of this book. This add to the intrigue as you read. Why does she feel that she can never do anything right? What is the secret that Kate told James that she hopes he’ll never reveal? What made James change his mind about their seemingly perfect relationship?

After the humiliation of the #wannabewife video and seeing how hurt and small Kate felt, it was lovely to read about her learning to love herself and find her passion in life. That passion didn’t just involve design but also a certain tradesman called Alex. He was also a bit of a man of mystery, living off radar on his boat in Croatia. I’m not going to tell you much about Alex as that would spoil the story but I will say I think I was a little bit in love with him myself!

Is this my new favourite Isabelle Broom novel? It could well be. I highly recommend that with exotic getaways looking unlikely again this summer for most of us, you treat yourself to a copy of The Getaway. It’s gorgeously romantic, beautifully written, full of passion and intrigue and the perfect escapist read for summer.

This is my first novel I’ve read by Isabelle Broom and I can’t wait to read her other books. Where have I been?!

📚Overview
After a less than perfect engagement leads protagonist Kate single, her brother Toby decides that wallowing in bed is not the answer. And as her failed proposal makes its way across the internet, in a bid to escape Kate joins Toby on his return flight to Croatia.

While most travel to Croatia for the beautiful pebble beaches and gorgeous sunshine, Kate is there to disappear and it isn’t long until she meets another lost soul in Alex.

Could they be who each other need?

📚My Review

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thanks to @NetGalley and @HodderStouton for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

#TheGetaway is the perfect Summer read, set against the stunning backdrop of Hvar. There is so much detail provided for the beautiful islands that you feel you’re experiencing Kate’s journey firsthand. The author really engages all your senses - from the description of local delicacies, to the stunning views and smells of the Marina. I visited Croatia in 2018 and felt a strong wave of nostalgia for the week I spent there.

Kate is a fabulous protagonist. Her journey to self discovery is very raw and real, especially the internal battle of dealing with her relationship with James. From wanting to make James miss her, to realising that she was often in his shadow and the way her best friend Robyn tried to provide perspective were all great ways to explore the stages of a broken relationship.

From the first meeting with Alex, I loved the chemistry between the two of them. I enjoyed how Alex remained a mystery almost throughout, with the chapters adding to the secrecy. I liked that as a reader I was in the dark as much as Kate and the regular disappearance leftme questioning and surmising throughout.

A perfect Summer read!
