This is the second highly abridged and simplified Sherlock Holmes novel in this series that I have reviewed. In the case of the first book I was quite negative, since - as a teacher - I am less convinced of the merits of oversimplification of novels as that often removes the essence of the book. My eleven year old grandson, however, gave me a different perspective as he had enjoyed the book, although it was ‘a bit short’. Some justification of my reservations, however, came from his reading of this adaptation of the famous Arthur Conan Doyle detective novel. On this occasion, the eleven year old ( and now expert) reviewer echoed my concerns when he explained that there was more that could have been written and that it didn’t really give the reader enough detail to chew on. Clearly, there is a role for these adaptations. Nevertheless I remain convinced that the original books are more accessible than might at first be thought. There is also a tremendous learning opportunity from the setting of the books over a century ago.

My dad has always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes and when I was a little girl I wanted to read the books too, but they were hard for me to understand. I know that 8 year old me would have absolutely loved this adaptation.

It’s also an excellent book for those who are learning english and would like to improve their reading skills with the classics. It’s easy to read and the illustrations made the story even more interesting. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

Thanks to Sweet Cherry Publishing and the NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a simplified version of the original story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, adapted for children by Stephanie Baudet.
I enjoyed reading this for my daughter who is almost 6 years old. She liked it and for some reason was fascinated by Doctor Mortimer and kept on asking me to read about him instead.

The mysterious Hound of Baskervilles is haunting the moor in Devon. It has already claimed Sir Charles Baskervilles' life and his heir might end having the same fate if he chooses not leave the area.
There is only one person who may uncover the truth and that is the famous Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks to Sweet Cherry Publishing and the NetGalley for providing me with a copy.

I really enjoyed the illustrated adaptation of Sherlock Holmes: The Empty House that I read from this series, so I decided to try The Hound of the Baskervilles too. I wasn’t disappointed.

This book was a really enjoyable read. The plot was interesting, and didn’t feel dumbed down (though obviously it was simplified). I think Stephanie Baudet has done an excellent job of adapting this story, and the fun illustrations by Adrianna Bellucci really bring it to life. I particularly like the way Holmes and Watson are portrayed.

Overall, this was an enjoyable adaptation, suitable for children, and anyone else who wants a quick to read version.

I was given a free copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Reimagining a classic!

With a deadly phantom hound on the loose, Sherlock Holmes and his partner in (solving) crime Doctor Watson travel to the moor in Devon to try and solve the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville...

We all know the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his mysteries. However this was created to tell the story of The Hounds of the Baskervilles in a child friendly way.

I particularly liked the use of images, illustrations and extra wee details such as the newspaper articles and letters - which I know will interest children trying to solve the mystery themselves!

It was a great book which I think introduces children (8-12 years) to the work of a classic author and they get to meet the world’s most famous detective.

Very adequate children's adaptation of the classic book. The illustrations are cute and the characters are consistent with the original. I enjoyed it and I'll likely ride it to my 6-year-old, who will probably also enjoy it.

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles is a retelling with young readers in mind. The story is an adaptation with graphics kids will enjoy. I think students grades 3-5 will like story but some parts jumped around and I also a bit confused at the ending they had but I'm probably thinking to hard.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Once again, Stephanie Baudet has created a fantastic version of an Arthur Conan Doyle classic in The Hound of the Baskervilles for middle grade readers.

The story loses none of its wonder or suspense that has made Conan Doyle's work a well-deserved place as a British classic. Instead there is a simplicity to the story that enables young readers to fall in love with the adventures of Sherlock Holmes that are documented by his friend and accomplice, Dr John Watson.

With carefully placed information explaining such things as Hansom Cabs and illustrations that are done to show both events and particularly important elements to the tale (letters to Holmes etc) it is the perfect blend to ensure a new generation will be afraid for Sir Henry Baskerville and his life upon the Devon Moors.

Do you want to read the Hound of Baskervilles but don't have a lot of time? Do you have a child that you want to introduce to Sherlock Holmes, but they're not ready for the source material? 100% I recommend this book! It's simplified enough for children, but it hasn't removed the best parts of the story.

A strange beast is stalking the Devon moors and Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr Watson must determine exactly what has caused the death of Sir Charles Baskerville before his nephew meets the same fate. With an escaped convict also in the area, this could prove to be an incredibly dangerous task for the detective.

This is the next installment in the Easy Classics series which aims to introduce classic works to a younger audience. I have read some others in this series (The Empty House, A Study in Scarlet) and thoroughly enjoyed them, and this was no exception. Superbly adapted and illustrated by Stephanie Baudet and Arianna Belluci, this captures the essence of the Conan Doyle classic, retelling the story in a way that is accessible to younger readers without ever compromising the plot.

This is a superb series, one that I thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting to introduce younger readers to Sherlock Holmes. Unfamiliar vocabulary such as hansom cab is also explained, meaning that these are books that children can read independently.

My daughter has been reading The Hound of the Baskervilles in school with her class. She was complaining before the holidays that she would have to wait until after Easter for the class to finish the book, so when I saw this edition on Netgalley I requested it so she could read it.
She thoroughly enjoyed it and flew through it in an evening.
She said it's a really good read with an interesting story.

This edition is aimed at younger children it's illustrations will help engage even the reluctant readers, anyone who is able to read independently would enjoy this book.
Brilliantly adapted for the younger audience.

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles is a children's adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous fourth Sherlock Holmes novel, made readable to younger readers who would otherwise struggle with the archaic language and complex prose of the original. The book was adapted by Stephanie Baudet and illustrations were provided by Arianna Bellucci.

Baudet did a fantastic job of simplifying the text to make it less intimidating. The plot was also cut down, which will surely be useful to younger readers who would struggle to follow some of the more convoluted plot points of the original. The illustrations were well-done and added interest to the book. While this isn't the first Sherlock Holmes story, I think nearly everyone is familiar enough with the character to pick this book up without doing any homework beforehand.

The story does lose something in its simplification, unfortunately. While finer details naturally need to be excluded to keep the book succinct and accessible, vital details must be retained to maintain the integrity of the story. At times this adaptation simplified characters and plot points to the degree that it was difficult to discern the characters' motivations and the driving force behind their actions, making the narrative a bit more difficult to follow and appreciate.

Overall, although I did have some nitpicks, I found Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles to be a great reworking of the original novel for younger readers. Stephanie Baudet did a fine job in reformatting the book without losing the essence of the story.

This is a children's adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, retelling the classic story of the mysterious detective, his down-to-earth assistant, and a murder involving a large ghost hound. This is a fun, easy read that is perfect for younger children.

The story was told in a compelling manner that kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting to know how the mystery was solved. The spirit of the original plot and it's asthetics shone through and made this an enjoyable read. The illustrations were cute and added to the book.

Although the story was well adapted, the characters less so. Specifically, I felt as if I was missing the distinctive personality of the detective wasn't written well. He felt like any detective from any children's book which is a shame because his deductive reasoning and dialogue with Watson made the original books what they were.

I enjoyed the story and think that younger children will too!

As a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, I felt that this was a great adaptation of the classic but for children. The story was very easy to understand and written in a way that children will enjoy.

I really enjoyed this.

I thought this was a great adaptation of a British Classic Sherlock Holmes. This was great for young readers for them to experience the story in a way where they can understand and enjoy the illustrations. I think that Stephanie Baudet did a great job capturing the story and made the characters a joy to read.

I received a copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This has been adapted fantastically for children. As a teacher, I could see many children enjoying this version of The Hound of Baskervilles. I loved the explanation of the hansom cab and how the letters were written, as these help keep the children engaged with the story.

I would recommend this for children in Year 3/4.
