Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead.

I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings.

Anything requested and approved will be read and a decent quality review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Great storyline!!! Lots of action and great characters. Andi moves to Coffin Cove to work as a reporter. Andi had a hard time at her last job and was fired and blacklisted after she published a wrong article so she was lucky for the job she got in Coffin Cove. She loves the little island and quickly becomes involved in island gossip and previous murders and deaths on the island. I had never read this author before but I quickly got into it and loved this book.

A reporter who has lost her drive and job, on a journey to finding herself once again. The resurgence of a twenty-year-old murder mystery, mixed up with a couple of new ones, was more than a girl could ask for to get the process going. Things got dicey for Andi when a killer drug dealer showed his hand. Detective Vega hated working alongside reporters. With a nose for digging out information, Andi had found the root cause for the murders. Detective Vega had no other choice but to work along with her and her cohorts. An engaging and interesting crime thriller.

An investigative journalist moves to a job in Coffin Cove, fishing town in Vancouver Island, after a job and romance gone wrong and she's heading off the rails. Enter dead sea lions and then a body. She links this to an unsolved cold case of some 20 odd years ago. Along the way there are family feuds, eco-terrorists and an oh so not so good local 'big family'. Well-written and certainly keeps the reader engaged. Glad to say that the rather sorry for herself main character started getting things together and has, by the end, promise of more to come. .Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Coffin Cove by Jackie Elliott is the first book in Coffin Cove series.

It tells a story about female reporter who after losing both her job and her boyfriend ends up in a small Vancouver fishing village, where she thinks nothing ever happens.
When two carcasses of sea lions wash up on a shore soon followed by a dead body things quickly turn ugly.
But when it all connects to a murder that happened some twenty years ago main protagonist Andrea will not be able to stay away.
Solid start of a new series, it was a bit slow at the beginning and I have to say I wasn't especially interested when details about activists actions were explained.
I really liked main character, she is very human and relatable, which I find endearing. She is struggling with so many things in her life but is trying to do better.
There are twists and turns and the story flows nicely.

Coastal noir meets cosy mystery in Jackie Elliott’s debut novel set on the picturesque shores of Western Canada: Coffin Cove.

Andi Silvers had once thought that she had the perfect life. As a star reporter with a gorgeous partner, Andi thought that she had everything she had always wanted – until she was dumped and dismissed from her job on the paper. With nowhere to go and in desperate need of a fresh start, Andi decides to bid her old life goodbye and move to the fishing village of Coffin Cove where she takes up a job working on the local paper. Small towns aren’t usually a hotbed of excitement and Andi has resigned herself to covering mundane community events and parking tickets. But Andi quickly realises that life is far from quiet in Coffin Cove.

When two sea lions wash up on the shore having been shot dead, the local activists are up in arms and are placing the blame squarely on the local fishermen’s shoulders. There is great unrest and division in the community – which is amplified several notches when a dead body turns up. Andi is determined to get the scoop and to give her readers all the exclusive details about this murder, but when she starts investigating, she comes across another story of another death from two decades ago that might just help shed light on the current case. A fifteen year old girl had been found drowned twenty years ago with her arms and legs tied together. The more she digs, the more Andi finds shocking parallels between the two deaths leading her to wonder whether the murderer had some unfinished business – and whether they are waiting in the shadows waiting for the right time to settle old scores.

Can Andi uncover the truth that has lain hidden for so long? Will Coffin Cove ever be a place she can call home? Or will she end up getting out of town as fast as her legs can carry her? Who knows, maybe the locals will give her a reason to stick around after all…

Jackie Elliott’s Coffin Cove is a thrilling and engaging mystery spiced with humour, tension, intensity and a sprinkling of romance. Andi Silvers is a great heroine readers will enjoy spending time with and the coastal beauty of Western Canada is brought beautifully and vividly to life. Coffin Cove is a deftly plotted, well-written and highly satisfying mystery with plenty of revelations and surprises to keep readers hooked and avidly turning the pages.

A brilliantly-paced crime thriller which I found very enjoyable, I hope there will be more visits to Coffin Cove in the not too distant future.

I really enjoyed coffin cove set in Canada. It was a little stereotyped in places but nonetheless very enjoyable and I would certainly read another if this were to become a series.

This book included twists and turns as well as engaging characters. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next and find out the backstory of the main characters. This story is well written and kept me turning pages to the end!

Jackie Elliott has created a small town community that keeps a murder mystery alive for years but all is torn up when another murder takes place but are they connected? Well written and atmospheric of run down struggling community in the rural backwoods with plenty of believable characters

Set in Canada, Andi Silvers has ended up as a reporter on a struggling small town newspaper, after making an error of judgement. She’s licking her wounds while she tries to get herself back together, and finds she is becoming more involved in the community than she expected. In fact finding herself feeling the excitement and energy of a big story coming her way.

An interesting read for a debut novel. The scene setting was well done, if a bit slow at times. The characters come over as realistic, despite the slight cliche of a reporter having a drink problem, and the plot is well thought out. The pace picked up nicely and kept my interest right to the end. I shall wait with interest for the next book in the series.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Jackie Elliot's novel is set in Canada and features reporter, Andrea 'Andi' Silvers, working on a paper in Vancouver whose life goes down the pan when she finds herself let go by newspaper and dropped by her married lover, a colleague. She is struggling to control her intake of the demon drink, and finds herself hired by a small struggling local paper, The Gazette, run by Jim Peters in the small fishing village of Coffin Cove, the kind of community where everyone knows everyone, on Vancouver Island.. With Peters wondering if hiring her was a mistake, there is the strange event of two sea lions discovered shot dead, followed by a dead body also shot. Andi has the chance to resurrect and rescue her career as she turns investigative journalist following a story that she connects with the death of a young girl from the past. The author provides a great sense of location with her detailed descriptions in this crime read with twists and a community with secrets. An engaging enough read that I enjoyed, especially the location.

✍️ After getting fired and being dumped by her married co-worker, Andi Silvers has to find a new job. She accepts to be a reporter in Coffin Cove for the small-town Gazette. She knows she has to stop moping and drinking if she wants her life back. Andi gets her chance when two sea lions turn up on the shore, shot to death. Local fishermen are blamed till a body turns up as well.

❤️ I liked:
🏚️ The setting. I loved the fishing village of Coffin Cove. It was not described as an idyllic place, but I felt a great connection anyway, probably because one of my favourite places here in Ireland is the fisherman village beside mine.
✍️ Andi is a journalist. I love reading books where the main character is a journalist trying to find the truth. Again, I felt a strong connection because I have always loved investigative journalism.
👨👩 Plot and characters. The story is well-thought-out, and the characters are very well developed. What can connect the shooting of two sea lions and the death of a young girl many years before?

🤔 I wasn't so sure about:
💌 The beginning. In the first pages, the author gives a detailed backstory of each character that is introduced. I struggled a bit to understand who was going to be the main focus of the story.
😅 Too many details. The plot is very meticulous, with many tiny details that can, unfortunately, be easily forgotten.

⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 An entertaining mystery, with an interesting set of characters and a very original whodunit.

I loved this small-town mystery; a who-done-it with multiple layers, twists, and turns. The story moved quickly, yet the characters had plenty of time to develop. I will definitely be re-visiting Coffin Cove.

It's a good story but I didn't like the characters and the story fell flat.
Not my cup of tea.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Andi's life is in tatters. Having an affair with a colleague, and a married one at that, was not a good move and to compound the damage she gets drunk and goes to his home to confront him. The final nail in her coffin is getting fired. Her journalist career is in jeopardy when in desperation she accepts a job as reporter/assistant on a remote Vancouver Island with a small independent newspaper. Battling an addiction to alcohol she packs up and moves to Coffin Cove.

The first news story is investigating the shooting of 2 sea lions. Not exactly the adrenaline pumping case she would have chosen but when she sees an opportunity to link it back to the death of a young girl many years ago it becomes more interesting.

I like Andi. There is intrigue and realism to be had with a damaged character and Andi delivers in spades. She is a good contrast to the other characters which makes for an interesting mix of different personalities.

The story is intriguing and at no point did I suspect who had killed Sarah so that came as a total shock. Lots going on to keep the adrenaline flowing with drugs and gangsters thrown into the mix.

All in all a very interesting read I am looking forward to reading more from Jackie Elliott
