How did I miss writing a review for this? I listened to the downloadable audio, read by Stephen Briggs. He's my favorite narrator-- his audio edition of [book:Nation|2855034] is my all-time favorite audiobook.

Fans of the author will see little glimpses in here of well-loved characters. It moves a bit slowly maybe for actual juvenile listeners, but is a good family-friendly listen. I would be interested in seeing a kind of tracked-changes version, with this edition's edits overlaying the original story, just to see.

It took me a really long time to get into this one, and I started it from scratch 7 or 8 times because of how much my mind would end up wandering, but once I got into it I really enjoyed it! Pratchett always has great characters that are a lot of fun. Probably should have read this one rather than listened though!

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK Audio for am eAlc in exchange for an honest review.

The Carpet People is a story of how the Carpet became full of life. With its different tribes and ways of life.

Unfortunately, I didn't get very far into this audio, which is saying something as it is so short to begin with.
I didn't even finish the first chapter in fact. Why? you ask. At only 4% = 10 or so minutes, I already felt that there were racist vibes. Firstly, we were told that these people were not stupid, yet Pratchett goes on to describe them as such. This could be over looked if it was deemed as sarcasm from the characters point of view.

However, Pratchett then goes on to describe the shaman as clean, unlike other shaman and that he also didn't wear bones and feathers like the other shamans' did. Then there is a horrifying part where we are given a sample of what other shamans' spoke. This was actually stomach turning and happened more than once.

The only thing I liked about the audio was that David Tennant seemed to be doing a good job. But this was still tainted by the contents of the work. I feel shocked that Tennant would agree to work with such a piece.. Perhaps the fact that this piece is fifty years old is more of an indication of how out off date it is rather then how great a work it is.

I for one differently think this piece has served it;s time and that it may be better to let it rest in peace. It may have been better to focus on Pratchett's better works if there are any. As my first taste of his work I am left with a bad taste..

I may try some of his later works in the hopes that he developed both in writing and morality. I will be DNFing this work and never allow any child I know to read it. Very disappointing. I'm giving it one star and that is because of David Tennant's voice acting.

If you ask who my favourite author is then I will tell you (without pause) that Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are my most loved reading experiences. If I had a shortlist of audiobook narrators then you can bet the house on David Tennant being in the mix. So here we are at The Carpet People. It’s not a Discworld but it IS Pratchett and with David Tennant taking the words and giving them voice we are in dream team territory.

Confession time – I hadn’t read The Carpet People until I started this audiobook. Despite having read “most” of Terry’s books multiple times, I haven’t been so dilligent with the non-Discworld titles so there was extra anticipation for me as I fired up a new book. I was also aware of the background to The Carpet Poeple, written by Pratchett when he was very young and this edition released to mark the 50th anniversary of publication.

There were many elements to the story which made it identifiably Pratchett, the clever word plays on names and incidents. The humour was very much in evidence throughout the story and when you are telling an advanture tale humour so often loses out. It was a real treat to be listening to a “new” Terry Pratchett book after all this time.

But it took me a little while to get into the story and that took the shine off it a little. Initially I struggled to get my head around the key characters and their respective backgrounds. I found some of the gags had slipped by as I was trying to work out who was speaking and I think that, more than once, some of the Pratchett clever word play was lost as I was listening and not seeing the words on a page. I think it took about an hour of listening before it all started to click for me – as the book is aimed at children I am not sure all the kids I know would afford it an hour of their time to decide if they were seeing it through.

Which would be a shame as by the end of The Carpet People I was hooked on the story and enjoying seeing the payoff on the various plot threads the author wove into the tale (poor pun there but I couldn’t resist).

A huge part of my enjoyment did come from the fact David Tennant’s narration was pitched perfectly. Plus you can’t go wrong with a group of argumentative characters who all have Scottish accents, it sounds “right”. As you may expect from a multi-award winning actor the delivery and the emotion was spot on and each new listening session would begin with a big smile on my face as his familiar accent started to feed into my ears.

In brief, a slightly rocky start but those niggles soon left me and I enjoyed the wit, humour and devine story-telling of one of my favourite writers.

One final note – the very last words spoken by David Tennant after the book had ended and the credits had been read out were “Thank You For Listening”. Perfect. Why do all Audiobooks not thank you for listening? Audible just hope you “enjoyed this production”. Can we please have David Tennant thanking us for listening to all audiobooks?

David Tennant as always does a fantastic job with the narration. The life he brings to the characters and story is second to none.

I have loved Terry Pratchetts adults books. And shared this with my niece who does not like to read. She enjoyed listening along to the narration whilst following along in the book and I give this 5 stars just for the joy I saw on her face. !! I hope David Tennant will narate more of these younger stories.

The narrator was fantastic, a range of voices that really made the story come to life. The book is hilarious, packed with wild and wonderful characters. The story is set in a carpet, with such clever plays on words like the threat of the fray on there world the two brothers set off on an adventure to save the world.
A great introduction to Terry Pratchett books for children.

Such a fun, clever story set in a fantasy world 'The Carpet'. The characterisation was great, and there are lots of different characters. David Tennant as a narrator was perfect for this and really brought the story alive with his skill & voices.

Terry Pratchett got me back into reading after my English Literature A-level dragged all the joy out of books for me. Yes this is a children’s book, and being his first, perhaps not the best, but it’s still wonderful. As an added bonus it is narrated by David Tenant. Who could ask for more?

Absolutely delightful.

I listened to The Carpet People alongside my 10-year-old; it was magical for both of us. Full of the best of Terry Pratchett brought to life by the equally wonderful David Tennant who really did a fabulous job in convey so much and bringing to life the battles along with the naughtiness that is classic Pratchett. fun and naughtiness. And then there’s the incredibly sharp comedy and the deep philosophy.

This is a fantastic listen, sharp comedy as well as little gems of philosophy which will have you wanting to revisit the story time and again.

One for all ages.

What a delight! I thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious and at times insane audiobook. David Tennant's narration gave so much life to the characters, and was a joy to listen to. More audiobooks narrated by DT please!

I am a huge fan of Terry Pratchett so the chance of listening to The Carpet People audiobook with David Tennant narrating I couldn't turn down!!

This book features absolutely wonderful characters and I'll be honest I certainly look at my carpet differently now! The story features such characters as Glurk , Snibril and Pismire ( my personal favourite character) , animals such as snargs and pones and there is the Fray a phenomenon causing havoc.

The way that Terry Pritchett describes the characters and the setting really does paint a picture in your mind. You can imagine these little people living in the carpet and how much 'the fray' would effect them . He is definitely my favourite fantasy author, I don't think his books will ever age they are timeless and I loved this audiobook format , I would definitely recommend it , David Tennent doe s an amazing job of the voices !

I have never read Terry Pratchett, imaging his writing to be too weird and strange for my understanding and then an Instagram feature on Pratchett persuaded me that actually this might be writing I would love. The audiobook of The Carpet People seemed the perfect place to start . This is the most impossible story to summarise, not least because the characters have such wild and wonderful names - Glurk, Pismire...and the story is set in a carpet. ‘In the beginning..there was nothing but endless flatness. Then came the carpet..’ This is the story of two munrung brothers setting off on a great adventure as the world of the carpet is under threat from Fray. This book exists on so many levels -children will love the sheer adventure, the battles and fun and naughtiness. And then there’s the incredibly sharp comedy and the deep philosophy..David Tennant could read anything and make it wonderful and in his hands wonderful is made incredible, out of this world. He creates such a huge range of voices and a whole cast of characters exploded into view! This is a fantastic listen but it’s also a difficult one! The book is packed with comedy and little gems of philosophy which you want to savour and digest. I wanted to write down quotes to mull over so I was forever pressing pause! So I have decided that I just have to a) listen again and b) read the book as well because this is one to devour again and again! Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House UK Audio for providing a digital copy of this amazing audiobook.

I had never read this specific title by Sir Terry Pratchett and what a delightful way to rediscover it! David Tennant is a brilliant narrator (I'm glad he kept his accent for it!), the story is funny and imaginative and has that brilliant Pratchett quality - never talking down to the younger reader, and just spinning his tale with humour and creativity.

Fans of Good Omens' souls will leave this mortal plane once they discover this audiobook is a thing that exists! Absolutely perfect for them, and for adults and children alike.

Well, this was going to be a winning combination wasn’t it. I mean, Terry Pratchett, read by David Tennant, what on earth could go wrong?

When I saw that this was up for a listen, I could not resist, and I have to say it definitely did not disappoint..

Apparently this book is for years aged 7 and up. So I think that this comfortably covers the (ahem!) 50 year old kid that had it on whilst he was walking the dog, chuckling and grinning all the way round our regular circuit. I must say, I got a few funny looks. I don’t know if people realised that I had headphones or whether they thought I was just happily laughing to myself.

I remember reading this a number of years ago (it’s a number that we don’t have to actually have to mention, but suffice it to say, there were only four Discworld novels about). I had forgotten how delightful this book was. Full of Pratchett’s brand of irreverent humour and wit.

So, besides the fact that the book is brilliant, there is the audio. I knew I was going to love it due to the fact that it is David Tennant. He really does bring The Carpet People to life. Every character has their own distinct voice, resulting in the listener being able to recognise each character. But not just that, he has the perfect comic timing to deliver each killer line.

I simply cannot tell you enough how much I enjoyed this.

If you want my advice, get this straight away. If you love Pratchett, and you love David Tennant, then get your listening gear around this and then you, like me, can laugh emphatically whilst walking the dog and scare the local population.

David Tennant reads The Carpet People absolutely brilliantly. There are distinct voices for each of the characters and the story is told with all the right emphasis, emotion and passion and kept me hooked on the story. I found it wonderful to listen to!

I received a pre-release copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Narrated by the legendary David Tennant, the 50th anniversary of the brilliant Terry Pratchett's first published novel is celebrated with an audiobook I was lucky to get my hands on ahead of the official release. Not only was the book incredibly funny [and Pratchett's work only got better from there] but it was a stroke of genius to have Tennant narrate, thought I would die from laughing so hard. And is that Mark Beech's illustration? [in the Blake style as I call it] this is a treasure. Treat yourself! you'll feel better for it!.

David Tennant shines as narrator in anniversary release of Terry Pratchett masterpiece.
In a perfect pairing, audiobook veteran David Tennant spearheads this new release of The Carpet People, bringing the 1971 story to life in typical Tennant-style. Although aimed at ages 7 and up, the sign of a good storyteller is the ability to appeal to all ages, and in my opinion there was nobody greater than Pratchett at doing just that.
The Carpet People is a comic fantasy about a civilisation living in a carpet, brimming with the imagination and trademark humour you come to expect from one of Britain’s greatest authors. This story explores conflict, power-hungry establishments, and an adventure to save the day when it seems all is lost. It’s a big fantasy from a 17-year old Pratchett, and if you’ve ever wondered what the lovechild of Doctor Who and Roald Dahl looks like, then you’ve finally found your answer.
The Carpet People by Terry Pratchett, narrated by David Tennant, is released on April 22nd.

I'm an adult who listened to this children's story and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story telling is witty and clever, with the underlying message that we are more similar than we are different. It's made me take another look at my carpets! The narrator was very good as well, his reading definitely lifted the telling of the story.

Recommended.

I really enjoyed this! It was a really fun story set in a fantasy world 'The Carpet'. The characters are all great, and I didn't 'have trouble remembering who was who which I often struggle with when there are a lot of characters. There are also lots of different creatures which live on the carpet which I enjoyed learning about. David Tennant as a narrator was absolutely perfect for this.
