This book is seriously good. The third book in the Jake Parker series by an author has lots of experience developing great characters and throwing them into situations that take skills and knowledge that you'd not find in the general public. Nick Thacker is a prolific author, Goodreads says over 100 books and while I've not read them all, the ones I have are enough to get a thriller fan hooked. His characters are original, not warmed over repeats. The back stories and the surrounding communities and supporting characters are unique to each series. So, if you are in a rut, looking for a new, different but not TOO different series, pick Thacker for the win!

This was a good first read of the author by myself. I liked the characters and the brief explanation of some of the past story covered by previous novels in the series (I will now go back and try and read these to get a full understanding of the main character Jake Parker).

The story revolves around a former military man, also a former detective living above a bar deciding what to do with his career, when an innocent search for his father causes a sequence of events to start.

I enjoyed the locations, and the action throughout the book. My only gripe, is that as the story comes to it's conclusion, it seems a bit rushed at the final hurdle and stumbles in the flow in my opinion. However, it does set up a possible next book after an innocent plot point part way through becomes a final decision for Jake, and I look forward to seeing how this works out.

A story that starts with a bang, action, and for the most continues throughout the book. When there is no action the author has the dialogue take over with the story and then add in the different characters and you have an exciting story. One where someone is trying to kill Jake and he finds out it has to do with his father, which is not so good. This is all explained.
The reader is in for adventures worldwide, car chases, government agencies and secret ones, and others all after Jake. the author keeps the story moving along and without giving up any more information this is a very good book. False Allegiance by Nick Thacker is the third book in the Jake Parker series. I have followed this series from the start and I can guarantee an action packed story.
This time Jake finds himself investigating his father and as the story unfolds Jake discovers the consequences of this are much more serious than could be imagined. As Jake gets deeper he fears the choice is between his family and his country. One which is made more difficult as we get further into the story.
A thrilling read with high stakes and lots of action that really keeps you engrossed and stuck to the book. I couldn't put it down for any length of time the fact I was constantly wondering about. A cat and mouse chase that sees Jake travelling to Africa with Holland his friend to stop the bad guys.
I love all the books in this series and find Jake a likeable and realistic main character. He is a tough cooke but in a realistic way. In this book we find out more about his back story and I am enjoying the drip feeding of this. It always leave you wanting to know it all.
As always Nick Thacker has brought a gritty thriller with interesting characters and left us plenty to think about while we wait for his next instalment to drop.

Another great pulse pounding thriller that I was looking forward to enjoy after reading the previous book.

It picks up where the last one ended with a twist that made me want to read everything the author has out by now. But that’s another personal goal and one day will be that day for sure.

More suspenseful, more characters that make this instalment a fast action, never a dull moment and with some very twisted and unexpected turns for me.

I had some questions from the previous story and I’m happy that I’m ve got my answers in here.

The ending is looking like a wide open door for more mysterious scenes and I’m looking forward to read the next books in the series if that’s the case.

Oh my goodness! This series just gets better and better!

Author Nick Thacker really does know how to push all the buttons on those four things I always look for to make an amazing thriller. An opening that hits the ground running and sets the pulse racing, a storyline which never lets up and keeps the adrenaline flowing, towards an ending which is satisfyingly final and ties up all the loose ends of the assignment, even though I know that the next case is probably only just around the corner for this intrepid investigator. Oh! and that all important fourth element – the good guy can’t be dead, which Jake Parker only just manages by the skin of his teeth in all his adventures, but this time especially, was much too close for comfort!

Short, punchy chapters and some excellent crisp dialogue, kept the action moving along seamlessly at breakneck speed and although there was nary a wasted word or full stop, I felt that somehow I found out more about what makes Jake Parker tick, than I had in any of the previous stories, with many more moments of quiet introspection, making it much easier to relate to him, as much as he allows anyone to that is. He seems to have grown in stature as he has taken on the role, moulded and shaped it, to make it very much his own. His personality, emotions and vulnerabilities were more visible and laid bare for those who knew him best to see, in a very real and honest way. This multi-layered, intense and textured storyline, really tested Jake’s stoicism and loyalties, as he is put in the very unenviable position of having to choose between head and heart, country and family. But when neither are particularly palatable options, one side is as corrupt as the other, oh! and just about everyone wants you dead, what’s a man to do? Perhaps my only smidgen of concern for Jake, is that his love life seems to have stalled spectacularly, which is a real shame, although in Holland, he has now found a new working partner who he is able to trust implicitly, each of them complementing the other, without the need for any firm or binding commitment, as total honesty with each other is their unspoken bond.

The author has really found the perfect way to collaborate with Jake, affording him a strong voice and personal input into his own storylines, whilst still keeping a firm guiding hand on both characters and readers, leading them with total confidence and authority, in the direction he wants them to go, to a conclusion of his choosing. Jake definitely has a penchant for surrounding himself with water as the main arenas for his final showdowns, and as the action moves from the car chases of mainland USA, through the portside of Cape Verde and on to the inhospitable jungle rivers of the Gambian/Senegalese border region, nothing much has changed this time. The crisp and assured, observational and descriptive narrative, brings depth and range to the writing, affording a real sense of time and place, helping to put me right at the heart of things, although I’m not too sure that I would have been a willing observer to much of the action, between trying to fend off all those pesky night time jungle insects, dealing with the tropical heat and humidity, and trying my hardest to deal with the motion sickness of a none to stable boat on all that water – all whilst being shot at!

The author has, as always, done a great job at creating a well defined and developed cast of multi-faceted characters and whilst I might have been able to get under the skin of Jake Parker a little better this time around, connecting with him in any meaningful way is a whole different matter, as he definitely isn’t going to open up and let anyone into his innermost thoughts and feelings anytime soon. In fact that goes for just about all of the main cast of characters, who keep their vulnerabilities in strict check, as they are all busy ‘playing both ends against the middle’, with their double dealings, secret meetings, duplicitous behaviour and bare-faced lies. All traits I have to say, which make them authentically drawn and genuinely believable in the roles they have to play. Nick pays as much attention to detail with his transient cast of ‘visiting’ characters and when I had trouble spotting the bad guys from the good, I guess that’s a job well done by him!

This series as a whole, continues to be well considered and structured, so that each episode slots in as a stand alone story in its own right, whilst at the same time leading to a potential series finale which I just know is going to be explosive and all-consuming. I just need to know if Jake is going to survive and I can’t wait!

This is book 3 in the Jake Parker series. I really enjoyed this book. You are into the action really quickly, and the pace really keeps you on your toes.
Jake is a great character, really likeable and you find yourself willing him on.
While this book would read well as a standalone, its even better as part of a series.
Over all a thrilling read.

Wow – what an action packed thriller this series continues to be! This time the focus of Jake’s investigation is actually his father and the consequences of this are potentially lethal as attempts are made to stop Jake forever. Who is your allegiance to – your family or your country? As more secrets are uncovered Jake fears this will be a decision he’ll have to make, a decision made harder by the losses he sustains as the story progresses.

This is a gritty, edge of your seat, thriller and a great addition to the series. It is frightening to imagine this could be based on genuine facts, it is all so plausible! As Holland and Jake work together to thwart the bad guys, you’re constantly questioning everyone’s motivations and loyalties. It is a real page turner, a fascinating series of scenarios and brilliant read. This series just keeps on getting better and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who enjoys enthralling thrillers exploring the relationships between government agencies, secret agencies, the military and terrorists. It is a powerful, insightful look at the rivalries, motivations and machinations involved in this secretive world and superb story.

False Allegiance is the third instalment in the Jake Parker Thriller series in which Jake rapidly goes from being on the defence to being on the offensive as he attempts to track down those who are trying to get to him. What makes matters worse is that these people are unknown, and that somehow makes the threats to him all the more perilous and worrisome. His family, especially his father, begs him to stop digging for information on the person taunting him but Jack cannot leave it alone. The first time they show just how ruthless they really are us when they set off a bomb from which luckily no one was killed. This indicates to Jake that they are okay with collateral damage and are not just a threat to him and his family but the wider population too, which builds his desire to identify, locate and bring them down. And it wouldn't be a thriller without the twists, surprises and misdirection the author uses in abundance.

What ensues is an action-packed, riotous cat-and-mouse game where the stakes are high on both sides and the adrenaline flows. Protagonist Jack is likeable and intelligent as well as tough, but not so tough that he appears invincible, which adds to the believability. I enjoy learning more about his history as more backstory is revealed with each new book and there are plenty of near misses where your heart is in your mouth not sure what is about to happen. Thacker essentially takes some prototypical technology and gives it to a really bad person or organisation and then drops the whole thing into an exotic location, this time Africa, and the good guys have to go find the bad guys. Add in history, some of the cyber tech type stuff and you have all elements for an exhilarating action thriller. Nick Thacker writes espionage the way it should be written. Highly recommended.

I was looking forward to another Jake Parker book - I really enjoyed the first two. But I ended up not liking this one as much. The story line was interesting, but the execution was slow and kind of boring. I ended up skimming a lot of it just to get through it.

This was me first time reading this author and I really enjoyed it. The lead character, Jake Parker, is a likeable and intriguing figure and his family dynamic plays a prominent role. There are previous books in the Jake Parker series and should probably be read as such. Although I liked this as a stand-alone, I believe I would have enjoyed it even more if I had a deeper understanding of the characters and their backstory. False Allegiance is a fast, fun, and exciting read and I'm looking forward to reading more of Thacker's work.

This is my first read by this author and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I loved the main character here, he was so likeable and believable with a solid background history. When he is targeted by unknown people and narrowly escapes with his life he goes on the offensive trying to find out why and who is after him. I thought the book started off really well and just got better the more I read. It held my attention all the way through and quickly became fast paced, action packed and thrilling read that led Parker and his friend Holland to Africa. There were so many twists in the story which I really liked, and the book raced to a thrilling and totally unexpected ending where nothing was as it seemed. This book had everything I like - shady government departments, characters where I wasn’t sure if they were good or bad and plenty of action that had me hooked and rooting for Parker and Holland throughout. Whilst there were references to events in a previous book this book can be read on it’s own. I hope there is another book to follow and I would definitely read other books by this author featuring these characters.

A non stop back and forth between good and bad guys along with unsure guys. But a battle raging for Jake Parker and his friend Holland to do the right thing. I enjoyed this book very much and cannot way until the next one.

False Promise? Let me be extremely clear: As far as "facing constant threat of death from mysterious operators" plot lines go, this one was solid. After what has become a usual opening chapter establishing Jake Parker just trying to live his life, we pretty well immediately go into "constantly running from the bad guys while trying to solve a global mystery" mode, and in this part Thacker is excellent. We even get a bit of real-world discussion on yet another oft-neglected topic, in this case ... well, revealing that is a bit of a spoiler. But an interesting one, for sure.

But no, the "False Promise?" question from the title more has to do with the ending of Book 2 and my own expectations for this book based on that. I was expecting a lot more direct involvement from Parker's dad, leading up to a direct confrontation between father and son where guns would be blazing both directions. That... doesn't happen here. Though Parker's dad *does* play a role in most of the tale and there *is* (eventually) a confrontation and even a resolution. It just wasn't the all encompassing explosive type I for some reason was expecting/ hoping for.

But Thacker does in fact do an excellent job of telling yet another globe trotting Jake Parker tale and both wraps up this current version while allowing for new possibilities down the road. This reader, for one, hopes we eventually get to explore some of those. Very much recommended.

Starting off fast and getting faster this addition to the Jake Parker series is well worth adding to your reading list. Jake’s estranged relationship with his dad is a key ingredient to the plot which finds Jake trying to make sense of who and why he is being targeted.

The language is good and the characters are OK, but the rest is not good. The first part is as boring as its gets, and normally there's suspense in a book like this, but it's just an even, boring tone throughout. And then all the nonsense about almost anything, like driving, ships, fuel, islands and so on. Better shut your brain off before reading this one.
