What a valuable resource for teachers and others who work with individuals of diverse backgrounds! Though language is often assumed to be the biggest barrier to learning for English Language Learners (ELLs), culture can complicate learning in major, and often poorly understood ways. Ott pulls together well-regarded research as he helps readers uncover areas of blindness that result from viewing the world through our own cultural lens. The text is comprehensive, but also readable and practical.

Though many of the examples feature the educator teaching overseas, Ott's work has relevance for the educator teaching diverse students in U.S. schools. I like this text so much, I am seriously considering adopting it for use in my own ESL teacher-preparation class!
