I loved this book! This was brilliantly done by Dinah Jeffries. I have read a few of hers before and this is easily the best one! I read it on holiday and my family kept having to repeat things to me because I was so lost in the story.

The novel is the first in a trilogy (hurrah!) set in the Dordogne in 1944 before the Allied invasion of Normandy. It follows the lives of 3 sisters and their separate struggles and relationships as they come to grips with living on their own in occupied France.

I can’t wait for the next one!

A gripping Tale of three sisters who have left their Mother in England after their fathers death & gone to live at the Family's Holiday home in France, where they all encounter difficult times & life decisions during the War in being in German occupied France ,where a friend or neighbour could quickly become your worst enemy ! I am now going to eagerly await the next book about these sisters . A beautifully written novel intertwining the stories of 3 sisters living in France toward the end of World War II. Gives a feeling for the terrible way in which peoples lives were ruined and a measure of the terror that must have been felt. I would certainly read more in this series

Another great historical book by this author taking place in the Dordogne area of France. I loved the three sisters who were all so different in character but who all pulled together in the face of adversity and the hardships and atrocities imposed on them by the Nazis. A compelling read

I was given this book for free in return for an honest review. One of my favourite genres of stories and set in a place I have visited many times on family holidays, this story was set to be a good read before I even opened the cover. This was the first Dinah Jefferies‘ book I have read and it won’t be the last. The characters are all so different, yet their stories are intertwined effortlessly. It was a little ‘mushy’ in parts, but I could imagine that it would have been a passionate time, emotions continually peaking. I’d recommend this to my family.

I have always loved this authors books and this one did not disappoint. Her books always contain a very good story which makes you feel as if you are there living it with her characters but at the same time her descriptive passages are so evocative of the place she is describing. I have never been to this part of France but I feel as though I would recognise it immediately if I were transported there.

This story is about 3 sisters trying to survive the last year of the war under Nazi domination. Each sister has their own unique character and also their own story which is slowly unveiled to us as readers. The atrocities attributed to the Nazis is horrific and only strengthens our admiration not only for the main characters but also for all the real people who lived through this period in our history.

Despite the terrible events that happen to some of the people in this story there is an underlying optimism that things will get better and we are drawn into the hope expressed by Helene, Elise and Florence that better times are ahead.

I do not want to describe the actual events that happened to the Baudin sisters as this book needs to be read and enjoyed as the story unfolds. The fact that this is the first book in a trilogy is even better as I really want to know what happens to each of the sisters in the post-war years. I will be ordering the next book in the series as soon as I can.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have never read any of Dinah Jefferies books before. I love books set during WWII and this is no exception. Three sisters find themselves deep in the Dordogne in Vichy France, their mother back in England, their father having died. We get an insight into living in German occupied France and how austere and difficult daily life was. The sisters are all very different; Helene is the oldest sister, mother to the other two. Elise is in the Resistance and Florence is the dreamer, happy at home and in her garden. We discover why the relationship with their mother is not always amicable. As things progress and the end of the war is in sight, the girls face various hurdles and dangers which they have to overcome. past secrets come to the surface too and the girls find that not everyone is who they think they are. This book is very emotive and I really couldn't put it down so I was really happy to learn that there is a sequel due out next year - I cannot wait!! Tank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

At this stage I think I have read all Dinah's books and each one is a treasure.I love that this book is the first in a trilogy.The three sisters in this book where so brave and resilient in such a difficult era.

As the eldest sister, although still only young herself, Helene feels responsible for her two sisters, Elise and Florence. But life in the Dordogne is hard, and when the Nazis arrive in their village, everything is going to get a lot worse.

Daughters of War is an enjoyable read, with thought provoking images of life in Nazi led France. With the local resistance attacks leading to severe reprisals, it's not always an easy read, but there are lighter moments. The three sisters are strong characters, with very different personalities but all pull together when it matters most.

Good story and I would recommend to all who like historical fiction.

This is a WW 2 story that's a little bit different from most I've read.
It is about three sisters living in war torn France under Nazi occupation in a lovely village in the Dordogne.
Helen who is the eldest is doing her utmost to keep them all safe but it becomes so much harder as her sister Elise becomes involved with the resistance.
Florence the youngest of the sisters is very much a dreamer & spends long hours in the garden as well as putting meals on the table for them all.
After a very harrowing experience she becomes a shadow of her former self & her sisters are worried for her state of mind.
It's a beautifully told story that amble's along slowly at first getting to know the girls & their beautiful surroundings, but as we get further In to the story there are some harrowing storylines.
This book forms part of a trilogy so will look forward to finding out what happens next.

wonderfull wonderfull read will keep you up way too late and suck you right in .A wonderfull family saga .

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction and have read several Dinah Jefferies books so was excited to read this one, the first in a new trilogy. Set in the beautiful Dordogne region of France during WW2, and featuring a wonderful set of characters including three sisters Helene, Elise and Florence, this was a fantastic read. Gripping and fast paced, full of action and heartbreak, this was a really good read. Looking forward to the next installment!

This was an absorbing story about living under the control of abusive invaders during World War Two. The courage of the resistance is very well described and the problems of the communities are very realistic and well developed., The main characters carry the story with understandable reactions and actions. Fascinating read and I am looking forward to the next one.

A reminder of so many atrocities that were committed during the second world war. Nobody escaped unscathed. Although not a true story this serves as a reminder to never let hatred win over goodness. A well written, thought provoking book.

There are some strong, hard chapters in the Daughters of War that face the horrific reality of living during this time head on but for the most part the story gently rambles along telling the story of the lives of three sisters with French parents who are brought up in England until after their Father's death when they move to live on their own at the family home in France.

It is beautifully descriptive but a bit bland / dull, a dissapointing read after the fast pace of previous Dinah Jefferies novels.

I love a historical fiction, and particularly enjoy novels set in World War 2 so was looking forward to reading this.

This novel is quite different from other fiction based during this period. It’s based in occupied rural France – the Dordogne, where for a form of life seems to be going on. Its not life as in there are food shortages, Nazis based in the village, the resistance, and executions. But for the three sisters – the Daughters of War in the title, life is difficult but their optimism shines through and you really believe during the novel that they are going to get through this.

This is credit to the author as the details are meticulously researched. The descriptions of life, the countryside and surroundings are wonderful and really bring the sisters and villages life alive. Some of the scenes are harrowing, and you really think oh god. But there are other parts where the novel with the beautiful descriptions you almost forget that there is a war going on. Then you are reminded, and you wonder how people got through it.

My only set back is as its part of a trilogy the novel just ends with lots of unanswered questions and I will have to wait until next year to find out what happens.
