This is comprehensive introduction to the various types of projects—whether practical or artistic—one can accomplish with a sheet of paper. The introductory chapter is thorough and fascinating; I found myself looking up several of the people mentioned to find out more about their work. Another section introduces tools and techniques, while making clear that this is a collection that can be built over time. A number of the projects in the book can be executed without specialized tools. The folded models, like the other projects, are accompanied by step-by-step photos. The is initially a bit strange if you are used to reading standard origami diagrams, but the photos and explanations are clear. The specific projects span a wide range of papercraft techniques and provide an excellent starting point for a someone who might want to experiment before delving more deeply into any one craft form. The author is an encouraging and effective teacher, and the book would make a good gift for a craft-oriented person.

Due to reading an ebook instead of a paper copy I could give only four stars. I am sure that a paper book would rate five. Lots of information. Not just a how-to-make various paper projects book. Interesting reading. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.

I love to try different crafts so when this book came along I could not wait to try out the ideas contained within it.

But it is not just a how-to manual of instructions about making pretty things. It goes into detail about the art and craft. From the history of the craft itself to the experience of the author it is all fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed this book on all its different levels and would happily recommend it to anyone with an interest in crafts.

The Art of Papercraft by Helen Hiebert
Unique One-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques

Fascinating, informative, and inspiring – this book reminded me of a trip with my father to watch master papermakers demonstrate how they made paper. It also reminded me of my children’s science classes in school when paper was one of their projects. It also reminded me of pop-up books my mother bought and that I later made for my granddaughters. I learned information I had not heard before and would love to have this book in my library.

What I would like to try making:
* The pop-up alphabet
* The sailboat envelope
* Some of the cards
* A kite with my granddaughters
* Some of the origami projects
* And more

What I liked:
* The photographs & illustrations
* Historical information
* The directions – easy to follow
* The information on techniques and tools
* The variety of papers included
* The artists and their creations

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I buy it for myself or someone else? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I believe this to be an informative and handy book. However, I became frustrated when trying to read it on a Kindle. I look forward to examining the book once it is published, so that I can carefully examine the illustrations, and make full use of the colors included in the diagrams.

A nice and fun illustrated book, all about paper. We can learn the history of paper itself, and many various things to do with it (origami, folding, cutting), even how to make it ourselves. Each project is accompanied by pictures to illustrate the steps we need to take, and I found it, along the instructions, quite understandable. Not all projects call out to me but I will definitely try some!

I had no idea so many different things and steps went into making paper.
I enjoyed how everything was broken down into simple steps and the actual tools you will need and use a lot were mentioned, it's still a lot, but it seems to be a little bit more manageable compared to some other crafts.

All of the pictures spread throughout the book helped show what each project could look like and is great for inspiration purposes. Can't wait to see a physical version to see the photos better.

Highly recommend to anyone wanting a book that makes papercraft so easy to understand.

A fun book to play around with paper creations. Step by step directions to help you be creative and decorate or just enjoy making things.

This book is definitely meant for adults looking for some serious craft to take up their time or learn more about paper art. This book talks about the detail of making art and all the supplies you need to then turn it into art. There's a lot of good detail and pictures but nothing an amateur could pick up.

Helen Heibert descibes her creative journey wit paper, from her first class in Germany to her trip to Japan. She explains the importance of the “grain” when folding to ensure crsipaccurate folds. As a medium it can be increadibly transparent and fragile yet again strong and practical.
This book contains a number of projects including lanterns, votives , envelopes and origami animals.
Given that most home and offices have a ready supply of paper in recycling bins, this book contains a number of useful ways of upcycling and reusing. The projects help build skills and experience and would be of use to anyone interested in Creative Arts using paper, the only one that is missing is the newest trend of paper embroidery.

This is a very detailed book about all things papercraft.  You will learn a lot about the history of paper crafting as well as the tools needed to make your own paper crafts.  As a newbie card maker, I did enjoy this section of the book and came up with some ideas for cards.  I also gleaned some tips on how to do things more efficiently.  There is also another section on actual paper crafts.  And this section is huge.  With LOTS of projects with step by step instructions on how to do this yourself.  This part was not as interesting to me as the other section on the history and tools of the trade.  However, there were also some ideas in there I will likely incorporate some way into my cards.  I especially loved the project on including seeds in your homemade paper.  I also enjoyed learning about the actual artists that were featured in the book.  Such talented people.

All in all, this would be an enjoyable book for anyone looking for some ideas about working with paper.  And also a great read for people who are just interested in art and art history in general...even if you don't ever intend to make any papercrafts/art.

I love the format of this book, there are plenty of photos and illustrations which makes it very easy to use for a beginner like myself.

It starts with easy technique and builds up to very advanced and detailed ones so it has something in it for all levels. It also gives you a list of equipment needed and its not overwhelming or daunting.

There's also a lot of interesting information/history which i loved, you can really tell the author is passionate about the craft!

This is a really inspiring book on paper craft. The beginning of the book explains about the different types of handmade paper and paper modelling tools. It then moves on to plenty of wonderful projects, some very simple and some more complex. There are lots of photos to guide you through the process and show you the final product and there’s something here for everyone. I particularly liked the pop up alphabet and cards. Thank you to Helen Hiebert, Net Galley and Storey publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Art of Papercraft is a well written crafting guide with tutorials by Helen Hiebert. Due out 15th Feb 2022 from Storey, it's 320 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a multi-craft tutorial guide which uses paper as primary material in the crafting. The crafts and projects are varied and provide a solid basis for learning to use paper in many forms as an artistic medium. The book is superbly well photographed throughout and the tutorials are full of clear color photos which are easy to understand.

I liked the layout: a comprehensive introduction with tools, sourcing, supplies, and more is followed by the tutorials arranged by craft - folding, cutting, construction, and papermaking and surface treatments. Each of the tutorials contains a description with methods and techniques, tools and supplies list in a highlighted text box (measurements in American standard units), and step by step instructions accompanied by photographs.

The book also contains useful suppliers and source lists, full size templates, metric conversion chart, and links to online paper-arts groups and other resources.

Five stars. This would be a superlative choice for the home artist, maker's groups and activity groups, school/classroom instruction, or public library acquisition.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is a really fun book. in my opinion, it is elevated above many other craft books by the fact that you really don't need fancy equipment for many of the projects.

With sections on origami, some projects are super quick, and effective, whereas others, such as the sections on cutting and constructing take a little effort but produce beautiful products (I particularly ,like the 'blushing tiger' card!)

I found the step by step guide to each project super easy to follow. the illustrations were appealing and useful. Id recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their crafting horizons!

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

The art of Paper craft is a big book covering a big subject. What sets it apart from others of its ilk are three things; the authors clear depth of knowledge, the focus on using only one sheet of paper, and the organization of the material. I've read many similar books and they are normally chaptered by technique, e.g. quilling. The author divided the project portion of her book into four sections; folding, cutting, constructing, and papermaking.

The section on folding (origami) includes several interesting projects such as a tyvek lantern and a parrot. The cutting section is more diverse and includes several ways of folding one sheet of paper into a small book, a clever little kite, a pretty card that spells out the word peace, a slice form heart, and more. I especially liked the cut and folded tree, I've seen and made similar ones in the past but her version is especially attractive.

The chapter on construction is where things get really interesting. Everything from a wrist cuff made of a washable paper called Kraft-tex, to weaving, to a card that lights up at a touch. Pop-ups are covered briefly, the author has another book covering just this subject if you find this intriguing. Oddly, (to me, anyway) quilling is barely mentioned, only one project is given. Shifu, the art of making thread from paper is demonstrated, something I didn't even know existed.

The final.chapter, papermaking, discusses this art but does not show you how to do it. Instead many different fasteners and closures are demonstrated, e.g. velcro.

Overall this is good overview of paper crafts with many interesting and unique techniques. Instructions are very well done with step by step photos for every project. One thing I disliked was including a biography and sample work for every contributor, and every project had a different contributor. To me that was a LOT of filler, I would much rather have more projects. Still a solid buy for anyone interested in this craft.
