Anyone serious about papercraft will find this book useful, practical, and a pleasure to read. Hiebert provides plenty of technical and historical information about paper which casual paper folders will likely skip, but which is gold for artists just entering the field.

The projects range from very simple origami to complicated sculpture, and are presented in a way that makes this useful as a textbook for someone seriously learning the art.

There are recipes for glues (the homemade wheat paste is particularly intriguing and something I plan to try soon), practical advice on paper, including how to determine the grain and weight, and, best of all, gorgeous photos of completed projects from artists as young as 11.

This will make a great addition to library art collections and to personal collections of paper artists.

4 fun foldable stars
From the introduction: “Helen Hiebert is a seasoned author artist, papermaker, and teacher who has created a comprehensive exploration of paper arts in The Art of Papercraft. This book will prove to be an excellent resource for teachers and students alike… All of the projects are fun one-sheet wonders that introduce essential cutting, folding and assembly techniques. Each project is simple enough for beginners while being sufficiently sophisticated for the seasoned crafter.”

Paper is not only a means to convey information or images, but is also used as a medium in architecture, jewelry making, crafts, and even fashion. Hiebert’s well organized manual shows (both in written directions and pictures!) how cutting, folding, twisting, weaving, crumpling, and even tearing can turn a single sheet into unbelievable forms. She starts with paper sources, including how to make your own.

Every chapter has clear photographs of tools needed, sample papers and artist inspirations. Basic techniques are folding, cutting, gluing, stitching and embellishing. Examples of the many projects range from origami candy dishes and Halloween decorations to lanterns, plantable paper, mini-books, cards, envelopes and more.

I am impressed by the organization and clear instructions in The Art of Papercraft. The end of the book has a dictionary of terms, bibliography and extensive list of resources as well as templates for projects. The Art of Papercraft will inspire crafters, dabblers, and paper afficionados of all ages.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book wasn’t quite what I thought it was going to be, however it gives a good history of paper, different types and makes and then covers some origami projects and making your own booklets.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author Helen Hiebert and the publisher Storey Publishing LLC for the opportunity to review this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. Publication date is 15 Feb 2022.

My mom is a huge notecard maker and loves origami. My desire to review this book was to see if it would make a good birthday or Christmas present for her. Now I need to decide whether to buy a copy for me and for her or if we should share a copy. I reviewed an advance digital copy. I am just longing to feel the pages in my fingers and to review the photography in the format of a book. The book is the perfect amount of description, idea and creativity and incentive for you to take the ball and design your own projects. It gives you the spark and enough knowledge and inspiration that you can take that leap and give it a try. That's just wonderful! Can't wait to purchase it and hold it in my hands.

Such a fantastic book showcasing so many unique paper crafts that anyone from beginner to expert will find intriguing, as well as a fascinating look at paper production itself and how to choose or even make your own paper.

--Ode to Paper Lovers--

I received an electronic ARC from Storey Publishing through NetGalley, and here are my thoughts.

This book is amazingly beautiful and inspirational. It starts out with a history of paper and paper art, and then, with carefully curated projects from different talented paper artists, invites you to explore the many ways that paper can be cut, moulded, pasted, stenciled, folded, woven...and much more...with over 40 attractive and appealing designs. Many of which have elements of surprise.

I found myself wanted to make the majority of the projects! This would make an excellent gift for a paper-obsessed/curious adult or teenager, as the level of detail and the type of projects tend to be sophisticated and fun!

If you will do crafts with younger children, there are plenty of projects that you could do together. So if you only had to choose ONE book on paper for your family or classroom, this book would serve you well due to the large number of projects, and the high level of artistic appeal across age levels.

I love reading books about crafting and making a good, well rounded book that can appeal to beginners and more experienced crafters is certainly a challenge! However, the Art of Papercraft succeeds well. The excellent photos are bright, clear, and well laid out. I enjoyed seeing both a mix of professional and handmade tools. Many crafts aren’t very accessible without specific tools, so getting started can be difficult for those not ready to spurge. This is another strong point of this book – it showcases a variety of papercraft techniques, allowing people to pick and choose which they would like to try. Whether you’re ready to start making your own paper, just love origami, or want to try intricate paper-cutting techniques it’s got a little something for everyone.
When I started reading the section with projects, I was a little wary at the simplicity of them. However, the book showcases a nice progression of projects. They are organized by different papercraft techniques, and progress from easy to more and more difficult. The photo and text instructions are well laid out and fun to follow, and there are over forty projects to try out.
I wish there had a been a bit more to Chapter 7. I think it would have been nice to see a few projects or suggestions for trying out various paper decorating techniques.
Overall, this was a delightful introduction to papercraft, and I enjoyed reading it! I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into papercraft, and for any library craft sections. Some of the projects would also work well for library programming for children, adults, or teens.

As someone who has loved paper, loved the look, feel and smell of paper since shopping for school supplies before the next new school year in grade school, I love reading books about the uses of paper. This book is one of many I have perused for ideas on how to manipulate paper in new and imaginative ways.

I come from a long line of artists and crafters, and paper crafting is just another way of expressing our creativity and talent. Hiebert’s book offers new ways to look at manipulating paper in ways you might not have considered before.

I enjoyed perusing through her ideas, carefully looking at the photographs and directions. Some I’ve tried before, some don’t interest me, but some I am excited to try. Artistry is about possibility and this book is full of possibility.

This book is full of projects for crafters of all levels, and I look forward to trying out some of these ideas. I thank NetGalley and the publisher, Storey Publishing, LLC for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave this book three and a half stars rounded down to three stars.

I've engaged in papercrafts my whole life and have tried most of the techniques described, but even so there were a few new ones for me (eg studs, fasteners and eyelets). I skimmed through some parts and examined others in detail. The section on bendable paper using wire supports was very interesting, and who can't resist pop-ups and origami?

The projects were beautifully illustrated by the work of an artist, and it was lovely to see what can be achieved in the hands of an expert. However I thought that some of the projects went from ridiculously easy (a name card? seriously?) to much more difficult, with not much at the intermediary level.

The illustrations were all very pretty and colourful (as you'd expect in a book about papercraft!) and there is a useful glossary at the back - more than a glossary actually as it has decent explanations and instructions. Americanisms in the language (fiber...) and inches instead of metric measurements might put European readers off. There is a lot of information about the history of paper and paper-making, and the author is clearly very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, which comes across in the writing. I loved the story of the three little girls who set up and ran a charity based around origami to raise funds for clean water supplies.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an early e-copy for review.

This is a really interesting book. I love papercrafts, and have covered card making ,paper cutting and origami before, but this book introduced me to many more techniques.

I loved that fact that each section was accompanied by the work of an artist in that field, which shows you what can be achieved by an expert. I find this really inspirational.

I thought the projects in the book were all clearly explained and photographed, so a beginner could definitely tackle them, and there are plenty of different projects to go at too.

The paper types, materials and tools are also clearly explained, and all in all I found the book really approachable and encouraging.

After reading it I feel primed to go off and create!

If you are looking for a book that is a primer on paper, you’ll likely see this book as 4-5 stars. If you’re looking at it for the projects, it’s more like 3 star book.

I saw quilling in the description and jumped on it. I was pretty disappointed with the project they used to depict quilling. Is it beginner friendly? Yes. Is it anything special? Not really. I feel like I’ve seen similar projects to it and the others in this book all over sites like Pinterest and in every other craft book that has so much as a chapter on paper. If you’ve never seen such books before and don’t scour the internet for projects, you’ll likely appreciate this book more than I did.
