This book is beautifully laid out, organized well and the photos are great. Some of the fonts are a bit harder to read. My favorite recipe I want to try is the floral micellar water. Many of the recipes that call for essential oils do not have the essential oils being properly diluted with a carrier oil or butter and could cause some skin sensitivity issues. All in all, a decent book but I'd use with caution for some of the recipes with a lot of essential oil as the dilution ratios for those recipes are are way too many drops of oil compared to the amount of carrier oil . I recommend checking out the Plant Therapy brand and their essential oils safety group on Facebook that is run by certified aromatherapists.

This is a nice DIY book for making natural lotions, hair rinses and other skin and beauty products. There are color photos throughout and they actually show the products as opposed to just using stock photos of ingredients or flowers.

Someone else pointed out that you can find this sort of recipe online but a lot of the recipes online use ingredients that are not actually good for you, and this book does seem to be well researched. I tend to prefer even simpler concoctions and less use of essential oils, but it's a very nice book. It leans more towards things like lotions than makeup and you will need to invest some initial money in ingredients.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

This book gives the great and easy recipe to follow!
Being zero waste in my cosmetics for the past year, I found in this book great ideas and new cosmetics to make and try!
The book is clear and nice to read. The steps are easy to follow and understandable.
I think some of the product can be tricky to find if you don't live in a big city but, I guess you can find them on sustainable websites.
I already tried the deodorant (That I loved and recommendend !) and the cinnamon lip scrub.
This book is a good inspiration if you want to change some of the product that you use for something more natural and handmade !

I’m definitely interested in cleaning up the beauty products that I use, so I was excited to get this book to review. It’s a very visually pleasing book; there are plenty of pictures throughout, and some of the recipes include step-by-step instructional photos as well. All of the recipes are quite short, just a handful of ingredients, and most are pretty easy to put together as well (the majority just involve either mixing the liquid ingredients, or melting solid ingredients and then mixing).
But there are a couple of things that I was not a fan of. Almost all of the recipes are highly scented, in that they use essential oils. I am sensitive to fragrance, and while I can leave the essential oils out of the recipes that will affect the outcome for some of them. And while the individual recipes just call for a handful of ingredients, I don’t feel like this book is appropriate for a casual user, as your financial outlay is going to be substantial for the master list of ingredients. The author states there are “a few staple ingredients“, and there are 10 items, which I consider more than a few. Then there are 14 “other important ingredients“, and then the multiple essential oils that you’ll need. But if you’re someone who uses quite a few body and face products, and fragrances are not a problem for you, then I certainly think this would be an enjoyable book.

Thank you to NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

As I read through this book, I felt like someone gathered together a bunch of DIY tutorials and published them. Nothing really raised my level of excitement, but I do create my own creams, soaps, perfumes and lotions from scratch so it’s likely geared towards total newbies.

If you want to explore making your own beauty items, this may be the book for you. But if you have made things from scratch, this may not be the book for you.

Simply Sustainable Beauty is a wonderful collection of environmentally-friendly beauty recipes to decrease waste and consumption. A huge variety of recipes from face to body to hair are included and the list of ingredients are all recognizable. The photography is beautiful and I loved the tips included.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

Simply Sustainable Beauty is all about that short introduction to natural beauty products and how you can make them yourself with base ingredients. It is about knowing what it is that you are putting on your skin, and what those ingredients really can do for you. As this is something I’ve researched and tried out extensively for my small business, I would say that this is like the perfect first meeting to some of the base ingredients! In here you get recipes for making your own products (50 in total), that range from simple make up wipes to exfoliation scrubs.

It's accompanied with some amazing pictures and DIY jars for your products, and Smith also talks about how much plastic impacts the beauty world, and how we can try to reduce that by making some products on our own. Even living in a country where we recycle a lot, and almost ALL our plastic drinking bottles are recycled into new ones, we still have a long way to go in order to recycle more of our plastic and making sure that we don't use plastic where it isn't necessary.

I do however wish there was a more in-depth information on the ingredients and how they work together with different skin types, as my natural beauty “journey” happened because of my skin-problems and not being able to find products that fit my skin type. It talks a little about dry, oily and combination skin, but it has no information on acne, and what the different ingredients does to that (both good and bad). This is simply just a really nice starting point for a lot of people to just start this zero-waste journey!

But all in all, a book I highly recommend to those who want to dive into this DIY natural beauty corner of the world!

I am so happy to receive a copy of this book!
It starts with a helpful list of ingredient and equipment essentials. There's some lovely zero waste recommendations and tips, as well as beautiful photos, throughout the whole book.
The 3 main chapters are face, body, and hair; recipes include micellar water, toner, face masks, salt scrubs, shampoos, bath bombs - this list could get very long!
The recipes vary in how technical they are; some are very simple with only two or three ingredients. The instructions are clear and easy to follow.

This would make a fantastic gift for anyone interested in homemade or zero waste skincare!

Confession time. I love a good lotion and potion. So I cannot wait to try these! The ingredients are easy to find (online for some) and easy to follow and for way less than I pay for my current skin care and makeup.
