Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience

I see that this book is part of a series, but it reads nicely enough as a standalone, and I don't think I've missed too much references to events in the previous books. The book was an entertaining read, and I will read the series from now on! Recommended.

A Quiet Man is number nine in the Victor the assassin series by Tom Wood. Victor is lying low in a small Canadian border town, and in just a few days he’ll be gone without a trace. At the motel where he is staying, posing as a fisherman, he befriends a young boy, Joshua, and promises to take him fishing. His mother, who works in the motel, is rightly suspicious but eventually agrees to go along as well. When they don’t turn up, and can’t be found anywhere, Victor makes it his business to find out why.
A Quiet Man reminds me of the Jack Reacher books in some ways – and having read them all, this is a much stronger story than some of the more recent ones. In his search for the missing mother and son, Victor comes up against a corrupt local businessman, a meth-dealing biker gang, gangsters from Chicago (looking for revenge as Victor had just assassinated their leader), and bounty hunters sent by Joshua’s wealthy grandparents to kidnap him. Overwhelming odds you would think, but Victor can handle it.
Victor should not be an engaging character considering what he does for a living, but he is and that is down to the skill of the writer. In A Quiet Man, Tom Wood has written a slightly different kind of story than usual, though it is still immensely enjoyable as Victor may be a hired killer, but he retains his moral compass and humanity. Here we get a bit more insight into his past, and a glimpse of his more human side; Joshua has somehow reminded him of his own childhood.
The action builds to an impressive finale, and I could definitely imagine it as a movie on the big screen. This is one of my favourite series, and I look forward to Victor’s next adventure. A Quiet Man works fine as a standalone, but I recommend that you start at the beginning and read all the others to get the best experience. Thanks to Sphere and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

I would like to thank NetGalley for allowing me to review A Quiet Man, no. 9 in the Victor series by Tom Wood..
I have been waiting for the last few years in eager anticipation for Tom Woods new novel, and here it is.
Victor the assassin is hiding out in a small motel in Canada after killing a gangland boss across the border,. He intends spending a few days laying low posing as a fisherman on vacation and he'll be gone leaving no trace behind..

He doesn't count on getting to know a mother and her son, who has health problems and reminds him of his own troubled childhood.. Victor likes the boy and promises to teach him how to fish, and to Victor a promise must be kept. When he goes to pick the boy and his mother up they have both vanished and left hurriedly and no-one seems to know where they have gone.. Victor decides he must find them.

Once he starts looking for them, he finds himself at odds with the local criminals who own the town, the local biker drug gang, Members of the gang from across the border seeking retribution for the murder of their boss and to top it all there is a gang of ex military mercenaries employed to kidnap the boy at any cost.. Feeling threatened they want Victor out of town.. Only Victor's going nowhere until he discovers the truth. To them he's just a quiet man asking the wrong questions. How wrong could they be..

Victor is out numbered and out gunned but he doesn't let that stop his search.. Of course many people get hurt along the way in true Tom Wood fashion until it comes to a deadly explosive conclusion leaving bodies and body parts scattered about the countryside.. The only problem is now, we have to wait for Tom to write the next one. I hope Victor is well rested up by then.. He must be shattered after this adventure. I am..

A great read..

“A Quiet Man” is an action packed thriller about an assassin who is en route away from the scene of his last job, the murder of a Chicago mob boss. He books into a Canadian hotel in a small town and befriends a young boy, Joshua and his mother Michelle, who works at there.
When Michelle and Joshua disappear after arranging to meet up with “Victor”, the assassin, he is the only one who seems to notice or care. Despite reporting it to the police, Victor decides to investigate on his own and gets caught up with some very unsavoury residents of the town.
It became clear early on that this book was part of a series which I had not read but that proved not to be problem as the plot was very self contained.
I liked the character of Victor, who although he earned his living by killing people, still seemed to have some sort of moral compass. He felt compassion for Joshua as he reminded him of his own difficult childhood and for that reason he is determined to find out where he and Michelle have gone.
There is a lot of action and violence in the book and it also moves at a very fast pace which meant that it was an entertaining and quick read..
I would definitely read another book in this series and heartily recommend it to readers who enjoy action thrillers.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.

Victor is back with a bang! Another great thriller from Tom Wood, which fans will love. Victor is caught up with the disappearance of a mother and child and is on a mission to save them. It's well written, fast paced and full of action. What more can I say, other than just read it! Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
