Three women working together at one company all find themselves with good reason to hate and despise one of their male colleagues, Jamie. At a works party they make a pact to do what they can to bring him down and make him pay for how he has treated them. But when he is found dead shortly afterwards, questions are raised about what happened. Was it an accident? A suicide? Or something more sinister?

I quite enjoyed this book - it had a good pace, particularly as it neared the end, but I found some parts of it were a bit of a stretch to imagine characters doing. Putting that to one side, it's very readable as both a revenge drama and a whodunnit.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in return for an honest review.

I'm afraid, for me, this is an OK read.

It's a slow domestic drama that just didn't catch at all for me. It starts well, with a man found dead at a building site and then moves to the key women who worked with the dead colleague and the potential reasons for his death.

Each woman has a grievance against Jamie (the dead man) and the book explores each in turn.

It's not a bad read, just, not for me.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to preview.

Wow!!! Wow!!!! Wow!!! This book is a total page turner and will keep you guessing with every page. Halfway through I thought I had it figured out and then BAM! The ending floored me... I just loved this book.

Payday gripped me from the start!

You know me, nothing more than the synopsis regarding plot since I’m so bad at spoilers!

Excellent characters, I liked that everyone had their flaws although I didn’t particularly like any of the characters. They just very real. The scene setting is also fantastic. I can’t fault this one!

Overall I found this a really interesting thriller, it’s one of those books that leaves you thinking about it for days later. None of us are all good or bad but how dark is your shade of grey?

A very strong 5/5.

The death of one no-good man causes a shadow of suspicion fall on three women who clearly wanted him dead. They sure come to regret their moment of sharing some of their darkest secrets!

A gripping thriller from the start, with plenty of twists and turns along the way, Payday looks at three women who have been treated unfairly by their colleague, and the steps they take, together and separately, to seek their revenge

A really compelling drama exploring what happens when three women all connected to the same man in different ways get together and discover how each of them has been treated badly by him. Or have they? Their spur of the moment plans to get payback start to unfold and unravel As events start to get out of control, have they gone to far and are any of them guilty of murder? The three main women characters are all very different and the characterisation is excellent, with satisfying twists in the plot.

When three women who work at the same firm have a few drinks at a company party and get to discussing their charismatic - and problematic - colleague Jamie, it seems that each woman has a different axe to grind, and a reason to bring Jamie down. Jill is being professionally undermined by him, Alex was fired and used as a scapegoat to cover his corner-cutting, and Nicole confesses he has been sexually harassing her. But when Jamie turns up dead, it seems none of the three women have been telling the full truth....are they really the victims? Or is Jamie?

I really enjoyed it this book The story is well developed, with flawed and realistic characters (with the exception of Jamie, who was a bit too caricature-of-a-villain for me - how on earth he got one woman to fall for him, let alone two,was the biggest mystery in the book!). It was very much the women and their interconnections that carried the story along, and I loved that despite - or maybe because of - their mistakes, the author makes us care for each of them, and root for them. I found myself wanting to know more about them, even after I finished the book. AND I didn't see the last twist coming, so bonus points for finishing up with something that genuinely blindsided me! Already looking forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for providing me with a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an excellent thriller. There are a lot of things here that are very current and timely but told in a completely unorthodox way. I was immediately riveted by the main characters and couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

Late at the office party, you're chatting to two female colleagues. You've never spoken before, but suddenly you're talking in hushed voices about Jamie, co-partner and 'golden boy of the firm. About what he does to women. You all agree something must be done. The next day though, you're not so sure. After all, these situations are complicated, easily misinterpreted. Could there be another side to the stories your colleagues told? Was your own story quite as black and white as you claimed? But things have already escalated. And now the police are involved. They're calling Jamie 'the victim', but that's all wrong. Jamie is the guilty one. Isn't he . . . ?

I found it compelling reading, believable and with a finely tuned creeping tension. Excellent writing, characters and relationship development with sharp, dark edges. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

Knowing the author is a Telegraph columnist (a paper I don't read) I was a little concerned I might not connect with it but I have to say I was pleasantly and agreeably surprised. Well written, as one would expect with fully developed and well rounded characters; none of whom I particularly liked I have to say but very interesting. The plot did jump around a bit in the beginning , maybe a little too much? Quite a slow burner in terms of pace. Much more to do with thoughts, deviousness and very Machiavellian.
I did very much enjoy it. I had guessed the ending; it felt like the "right thing". Yes he should have been killed rather than survived so good plot choice.(This is discovered in the first few pages so not a spoiler)
A good solid 3.5/5 stars

Centred around three main female characters, Jill, Nicole and Alex who all work for prestigious property development company BWL along with Jamie the charismatic star broker.

Jill is in her sixties, company founder and senior partner, Nicole is Special Projects Manager and Alex is Jamie's PA. Their different professional statuses and their various professional relationships with Jamie creates a very interesting dynamic.

After a hard hitting opening chapter we are treated to a rich character driven, domestic drama style thriller getting to know the central characters and their changing relationships extremely well. Captivating in the same way Liane Moriarty or Jane Cory books are, characters, lives and relationships are developed beautifully while the darker plot elements simmer away nicely in the background.

I found it compelling reading, believable and with a finely tuned creeping tension. I really can't fault it, though can see some readers would consider it a slow burn.

Excellent writing, characters and relationship development with sharp, dark edges. Highly recommended.
