Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney is a gripping psychological thriller with a clever plot, unpredictable twists, and complex characters. A cracking story set in Scotland, kept me intrigued right until the end.

Another excellent book by this author with plenty of twists and turns. I has to read back a couple of times to make sure I was on the right track. As always with Feeney’s books I loved the ending.

Alice Feeney is the queen of the unreliable narrator so I knew going into this it was going to be an absolute headwrecker deciding who to trust. I thought I was prepared, wow was I wrong!

The book starts off with the very clearly broken marriage of Adam and Amelia. From the very first page there's an overwhelming sense of unease and a creeping feeling that there is so much that is going to go wrong. Just who is it that is going to come out of this the victim or victor?

There are so many little intricacies that you see unfold and reveal themselves as you read on. It's brimming with little plot twists and a few smaller storylines converge towards the end for that a-ha moment.

Very little is as it seems in this very dark, creepy, whiplash inducing thriller.

This was a clever read with plenty of atmosphere and a few chills along the way as well. Feeney lures you into believing a version of events that are eventually proven false, creating a suspenseful read that had me racing to the finale.

Adam and Amelia have travelled to a converted church for a weekend getaway. Yet, upon their arrival, nothing is what it seems and the shifting narrative proves that their marriage is one that needs more than just this escape for it to work again. Very quickly it becomes apparent that both characters have secrets and they seem to take a perverse pleasure in causing discomfort for the other. And this just made me more excited for the story to develop.

Adam suffers from face blindness and this, naturally, has had a significant impact on his relationship with others. I found this an interesting characteristic and it intensified the isolation that he experiences, reflected in the morose setting of Scotland. With the weather closing in on Adam and Amelia, no phone signal and strange occurrences, they begin to believe they are not alone. Yet, Adam has no idea if their encounter with a local woman is someone who he has met already – because of course, he cannot remember them.

The sense of confusion continues throughout the book and I liked how Feeney structures the narrative. Not only do we get an insight into Adam and Amelia’s private thoughts, the anniversary letters shows just what it is like to live with a man like Adam, who seems completely obsessed with his writing career and nothing else. I wrongly assumed many elements about the plot development and was delighted with how Feeney takes it in a completely unexpected direction.

The chilling atmosphere and unsettling environment makes this a great read for a winter’s night. I loved watching Adam and Amelia because they are constantly seeking vengeance for something the other has done. Whilst their behaviours are petty and a clear indication as to why they should not be together, I was curious to see how this supposed romantic weekend was ever going to finish with a happy ending. There are too many sinister clues that suggest otherwise.

I enjoyed this thrilling and surprising narrative. Feeney takes you away to Scotland with this crazy couple, a third woman and a troubled marriage. There’s only so many ways this story could end…

Rock Paper Scissors Alice Feeney

With a 4 hour drive ahead, I decided to listen to this book. From the moment I heard, narrated by Stephanie Racine and Richard Armitage I was hooked, I have loved other books narrated by both of these narrators.
I loved the story, loved the twists along the way, and at one point I had to rewind because I shocked at what I heard.
I finished the book while camping, I don't ever sit and listen to audiobooks, usually keep them for driving our housework, but I made an exception for this book. It was so good, I now need to pick something else for my 4 hour drive home!!

This was creepy, and I struggled to get into the book but mid way through a secret imerged and I was intrigued, it’s not something I would choose to read again, but it was a clever if disturbing storyline.

Another stand out read for me. I have read Alice Feeney before but this one really was something else. Dark twisted and thrilling to the very last word of the book. It was bleak from the very beginning with the setting and i should of sensed this book was going to give me all the chills. A brilliant read from a brilliant author.

This book is my first by Alice Feeney and only the second book ever to make me have an OMG moment part way through and to have to rethink everything I thought I’d read!

The use of alternating narrators of Amelia and Adam, (husband and wife) works very effectively, giving both perspectives of events. There are also dual timelines, with the past told from letters written by the wife on each wedding anniversary- probably never to be seen by Adam. These include a word of the year which make interesting reading and tie in well with events in the book.

There is also a mysterious narrator, Robin, who takes readers on a puzzling journey, I was very keen to find out her backstory and slot the pieces together.

The setting, a ‘haunted’ converted chapel, isolated in deepest snowy Scotland is perfect to contribute to the eerie, mysterious events going on.

I was particularly interested to hear Adam’s perspective, as a sufferer of Prosopagnosia (face blindness) and to try to imagine what that must have been like.

Within the book there are delightful illustrations at the start of each chapter. I loved how Battersea Dogs Home featured as a work place, adding reflective moments on the plight of rescue dogs.

I’ll leave my review there so that readers can enjoy the book journey themselves. 100% recommend this dark, twisty, mysterious tale.

This is a good quick read. It is full of twists and turns. Creepiness and the atmosphere of the old house really drew me but then that plot went in a different direction which did disappoint a bit as I like an old creepy house!

This is one of those books that stay with you long after you reach the end! Such incredible pace, dark and chilling characters and a real sense of not knowing who to trust! I absolutely loved it.

The good- Atmospheric, pacy, full of twists and builds great suspense.
A couple of things let it down - face blindness and in a few patches the writing felt too stylised.
Definitely worth a read for anyone who enjoys thrillers.

Of all the books I've received from NetGalley recently, this is the only one that was either a) remotely readable, or b) actually somewhat good. It was creepy and although somewhat unlikely, an enjoyable read.

This is a book that will have people talking about it long after they have finished.
Adam and Amelia are having a weekend away won by Amelia in a works raffle. This is in the remote Scottish Highlands and is a last attempt to save their marriage.
The pace of the story is like a race a slow start leading to plenty of red herrings and secrets in this psychological thriller. There is reveal after reveal and plenty of shocks to come and keep you on your toes.

I’ve read and loved a few of Alice Feeney’s books, but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed by this one. I didn’t feel very hooked by it, and it felt very slow. The ending was interesting, just not amazing in my opinion. The last book I read by this author was 5 stars for me, so I do feel a bit let down by this one. However it was still a good book, and the storyline was cleverly written. I was a little bit surprised by the ending, but not shocked. I like Alice Feeney’s writing because it’s always easy to read and I get through their books quickly. This one just felt quite slow at times, and I think it was longer than it actually needed to be. I can see why people love this one, but I just wanted a bit more from it.

Really good - superb twist. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the last chapter. I felt it needed more detail. But I’d still 100% recommend this.
