Sadly I was a little disappointed with this one. The inevitable comparison to Six of Crows that any fantasy heist story generates did more harm than good in this instance--I went in expecting a similar character dynamic full of complex backstories but the characters here fell short. I usually don't mind POV changes, but in this case there wasn't much of a shift between the characters, the majority of which didn't feel fully realised in the first place, that the switches between chapters sometimes just felt like a way to reread the same material from a different perspective. I did enjoy Kuhn's worldbuilding, and the magic system was simple enough that things didn't need to be overly explained and therefore make the novel feel overstuffed, which is a common mishap in fantasy novels.

(Many thanks to Netgalley and Orion Publishing Group for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.)

dnf @ page 62.

I try not to dnf ARC's but I got 60 pages into this and it just felt very generic and wasn't grabbing me at all. I feel like I've read this same fantasy heist novel multiple times before and this wasn't bringing anything new to the table (at least within the first 17%). It also seemed like there was a lot of information being fed to me with no explanation; multiple times I found myself flipping back and forth to see if character names had been referenced before to justify the way they're alluded to like I should know who they are. Also has a new least favourite trope of mine which is the brutal, killer woman who can't stop snarking and can't finish a single sentence without a witty quip. I beg just kill the man.
