This is a comprehensive book on Copics. Beginners will find it a treasure trove and even intermediate and advanced Copic artists will likely find nuggets of useful info they didn’t know before. It covers everything from the basics, like how the somewhat unintuitive Copic Marker Colour System actually works, to more advanced colouring techniques, including how to tackle individual subjects like skin, hair, clothes, skies, and water. I’d recommend it to anyone who uses or wants to use Copics, especially those with an interest in Manga.

I'd never heard of Copic Markers before I saw this book on offer for reviewing, so naturally I snapped it up and read with interest. I do not consider myself an artist - an amateur cartoonist at best, is what I am, but I'm very interested in the art-making process and I've reviewed numerous books on the topic. I try to learn at least a little from each one, and was pleased to learn something new from this one.

This is a well-written book with copious illustrations showing the materials being discussed and the techniques used to achieve effects. There is a brief Q&A at the end, and FAQ. A lot of the illustrations are from work done by the talented and dedicated artists credited with creating this book, and some of those are really quite stunning. The techniques used, even down to the specific pens, to create the art are gone into in some detail.

To my knowledge this book is not sponsored by Copic, so I had to wonder on more than one occasion why alternative tools got no mention. Not everyone has two hundred bucks to blow on a set of pens! A single marker and a refill of ink for it (so there is that) can cost ten dollars. In that way, it's possible to build up a collection over time on a sort of 'installment plan', and Copic are evidently quality pens and rank right up there, if not at the top, but they are very expensive and a big investment for a 'struggling artist' to take on. This needs to be kept in mind. There are cheaper alternatives which may or may not perform as well. I've never used a Copic, so I cannot comment on that score, which is why it would have been nice to have heard from the professionals about alternatives and the pros and cons of those versus Copics.

That said, I was impressed by how well written, useful, and informative this book was, and I commend it as a worthy read.

This is a really helpful book for anyone wanting to learn about using copic markers effectively. The instructions are clear and informative with helpful images to assist putting the advice into practice.

I have wanted to learn how to copic color for awhile now and this book provided excellent and detailed instructions (also with color photos for demonstration purposes). Opinion:
This book is actually worth every penny. I did not expect such a comprehensive and detailed book. Then there are just incredibly many tips, great illustrations, quite a lot of notes on what to look out for. I am really very enthusiastic. A great book with an incredible amount of content.

Conclusion:
A surprisingly beautiful book, where you really learn a lot. Therefore, I give it a really good 5 out of 5 stars. A very clear recommendation - that's exactly how it should be!

I love the instructional aspect of this book. It really taught me a lot. I will definitely go back over and over to brush up on my technique.

Great book! It teaches step by step how to color mangas using Copic markets. The book is very informative and colorful and it has lots of pictures. This is an absolutely astounding guide to coloring with copic markers, not just for manga artists but for any. It is filled with photos and instructions with individual projects galore and extremely helpful information. The colors are given by copic numbers since that's the purpose of the book, but I imagine you could find a chart somewhere to tell you what colors they'd be in other brands or you can figure it out. I loved the step by step illustrations of how to color everything from sapphires to grapes to make them look beautiful and realistic. Highly recommended.

Im relatively new to copics but have used other brands for several years. Mainly Pro markers. I know a bit about alcohol marker colouring, this book touched on the basics but it also gave me a lot of new ideas and tips for my copic pens. I also liked the fact that there was information on digital colouring in the book as well. I am new to that and found the information interesting and informative.
The tips and tutorials are well executed, and the photography was superb. Although for copics you could get the book and convert to other pen brands as there are lots of conversion charts online to help with this.
Its an enjoyable book and one I would pick up repeatedly.

Everything you would ever need or want to know about coloring with Copic Markers is in this book. Everything from shading to correcting mistakes is given a walkthrough.

First a confession: I’m a Promarkers girl rather than Copics, but the two are similar enough that I could still get a lot from this book. About the only thing that wasn’t transferable were the colour codes in the examples – and that is a little bit of a shame, as there are loads of great examples of colours that either go well together (including gradients) or contrast nicely. There are also several examples throughout of finished pieces and step-by-step walk throughs to achieving them.

Copics (like Promarkers) are alcohol ink pens available in a huge range of colours. I love the intensity you can get, but also subtlety and shading. However, after many years of not using them, I’d grown quite rusty. My first experiment came with a panic: is it dark to light when you’re shading, or light to dark?! (top tip: it’s the former ;)).

This book contains material for complete beginners through to more seasoned amateurs. It covers all the basic techniques, from choosing papers and nibs, blending and mixing colours, basic colour theory – which I thought I was well versed in, but the comparison of RBG and CMYK taught me something new! – and shading. There’s also a really good explanation of how to ‘read’ the Copic colour codes: letter family, intensity, then value.

I really wasn’t expecting to find tips about digital art, but there’s a fair bit throughout the book. I suppose this is the modern age: while a work might start on paper, digitising it makes a lot of sense! Or conversely, starting with a digital image – scans of your own drawings or otherwise – and printing those to colour. Definitely an added benefit to the book.

Once the basics are out of the way, we get specific tips for colouring skin, hair, clothing/material, backgrounds, nature, and more. Skin tones always seem challenging, so that was particularly useful, as were the tips for colouring liquids and more translucent materials.

The book finishes with sections on correcting mistakes, growing your skill level, and some Q&As.

Overall, I thought this book did a good job in covering the basics and moving on to some more exciting tips and walk-throughs. It’s quite daunting picking up a new medium, like alcohol ink pens, and sometimes the techniques go counter to things you may have learned with other media. So it’s really useful having a guide like this, particularly when it breaks things down step by step.

Not all of the material felt completely relevant to me, but there was more than enough here to make it worthwhile, and among all the things covered there’s bound to be something for every artist.

I've just gotten into alcohol markers (though I haven't bought my first Copic yet) and I hoped this book would give some tips and insights into how best to use them. And it did - but its usefulness was somewhat lessened (for me) because each color was referred to only with the Copic numbering system.

It would have been easy to make it accessible to those who don't have those specific colors by saying something like: "Use copic #xxxx or your lightest warm gray" rather than simply "use copic #xxxx."

And yes, I get that Copic is in the title, but still.

I loved the illustrations showing different styles and techniques, and I definitely learned some tips I will be trying out immediately.

I am still new to Copic markers so this book was super helpful for me! It has sections on coloring faces, clothes, accessories, nature, and backgrounds. There are also tips throughout the book on how to use Copic markers most effectively as well as how to get the most out of your Copic markers. The only thing I didn't find particularly useful is the analog to digital sections as I'm a strictly paper gal. I can't wait to try some of the techniques in this book. I had never heard of Copic markers, before selecting this book as an ARC. Turns out they are very fancy and exceptional markers that many Manga artists use to color their artwork. I am not at all interested in Manga art. I am on the other hand, interested in art techniques. I am not an artist but am interested in learning all I can about art techniques.

This book takes you on a journey through Manga art, to show you how to color hair, skin, and objects. Highly recommended.

Before reading this book I knew nothing about Copic Marker but they can be found on e-commerce sites like Aliexpress or Wish.

And now a completely new world of coloring techniques is in my pocket.

The book was written by professional manga artists who teach all the tricks of the trade, starting from basic techniques, including blending, mixing, and layering color up to create texture when coloring skin, hair, clothing, and scenery and how to fix mistakes!

For each paint you can find the list of color used and a detailed step-by-step instructions with related images.

This book is perfect! I really love it. It has everything you need to know for drawing with copic markers. For beginners and advanced learners. I am using copic markers over 20years and the book is still useful for me.

Manga Artists' Copic Marker Colouring Techniques is a compilation style guide with tutorials in manga style and with specific combinations and palettes for copic markers. Originally published in Japanese in 2016, this English language translation is due out 25th June 2021 from Zakka Workshop. It's 146 pages and will be available in paperback format.

This is a very basic beginner accessible book. The introductory sections begin with the numbering system and different pens in the Copic range and understanding how to lay down color and correct mistakes. There's a short tutorial on other tools and supplies which the beginning artist will find useful (more advanced readers will probably not find much unknown info here).

Following chapters contain step-by-step tutorials showing skin, hair, eyes, and other features as well as clothing and accessories, backgrounds, flowers and nature and composition. There's a useful troubleshooting chapter which contains a number of good fixes for unevenness, removing/covering misplaced color, lighting, and different paper choices for varied effects.

The appendices include marker FAQs and colors, links and resources for supplies, and a short thumbnail gallery of backgrounds for use in drawings. Each of the sections contain some digital resources for transferring and enhancing manually drawn pictures into digital media and enhancements and other uses for artworks such as promotional materials, keychains, cards, and buttons.

This is not a drawing manual, the tutorials are aimed at blending and using the different types of copic markers to color line drawings.
