This book is a lovely addition to the growing number of DIY beauty books that are out there. It provides great instructions and simple recipes for so many beauty-related needs: skin care products like toners, scrubs, etc. as well as actual makeup like blushes and lippy.

I found this book to be super helpful! I loved how it explained all of the toxins that we come in contact with daily and how we can avoid them. I also loved that it mentioned specific ingredients and how they can be helpful to our skin. I live in the US and use all natural products, so I found it interesting to see the UK perspective on beauty. I also loved all of the recipes in here, I can’t wait to try the watermelon face mask! I found the book to be colorful and super organized, which I loved! Overall, such a great book about all natural beauty.

I am a huge DIY skincare fan, so I'm glad I got to read this book! I love the variety of recipes and can't wait to give them a go! I also love the tips for what plants you can grow at home and use in your skincare.

The only part I didn't enjoy is the first couple of chapters detailing skin issues and diet advice... as a previous review mentions, there is no reference section or evidence provided to back up the claims made. While the author is clearly very knowledgeable, I would have liked some links to the studies mentioned. I would have preferred a collection of skincare recipes without these sections.

3.5 ✨

As you probably guessed by the title, Make Your Own Beauty Products is a book that describes how to make your own beauty products. But Charmaine Yabsley doesn't just delve into recipes, she divulges a slue of information.

Over thirteen chapters, Yabsley discusses:

* the benefits of natural products,
* how our skin works and what we can do to support it,
* ingredients we are better off avoiding (and why),
* problematic skin issues (and the likely culprits),
* food and how it relates to skincare,
* what to grow in your own garden,
* a checklist of everything you'll need to make DIY beauty products,
* a beautifully done guide on DIY beauty products (face, body, hair),
* facials and massages (and DIY products to aid),
* tips, tricks, and all the ins and outs of dos and don't for DIY beauty products,
* and last, but not least, DIY makeup!

This book is beautifully done, easy to read, and easy to follow. Yabsley provided photo credit throughout the book, which was a nice touch. Yabsley talks in depth about skin and how we can do our best to keep our skin healthy and beautiful, and her enthusiasm and love of skin care shines in her writing. I loved the variety of recipes she provided and especially enjoyed the section on facials and massages! I also appreciated the check list that was included to give me an idea of what I would need (or wouldn't need) to make my own DIY products. It would have been cool to include any possible substitutes, too.

However, as much as I enjoyed this book and wanted to give it 5 stars, I docked 1 star for no research reference/resources being provided at the end of the book, or throughout the book (i.e. footnotes). For a book that provides such detailed information, it is important to provide the reader with a clear reference section that outlines where the information came from, preferably a bibliography given that there was so much information stated to be fact. Academic peer-reviewed references would be the strongest. I docked 0.5 star for no index being provided. A book of this nature would be strengthened by an index, as it allows readers to easily find information and make reference to it at a later date. (Maybe this information is provided in the published version of this book? I can only review based on what I have been provided. Please feel free to clarify.)

Overall, a good read and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in skin care and making DIY beauty products.

Thank you to NetGalley for an e-ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. This book stood out from most regarding making your own products, especially beauty products, because it's very clear the author had a thorough knowledge of how our skin works, how to make nature work for you to age and care for your skin as gracefully as possible. I highly recommend this one.
