This was a hit with my 7 and 8 year old girls who love anything to do with princesses, dragons and mermaids. It was a very funny and modern story with great little illustrations and a diverse cast of characters. The two main characters are princesses (Grace and Portia, adopted sisters) with very different, but strong personalities. I enjoyed the fact that both girls have different strengths and this is not a typical "princess" type story. I can see it leading to discussions about equality and how it plays against the usual tropes of these sort of settings. Equally, the dragon in the story plays against type and loves water and swimming!

Although girls were the first to pick this book up because of the title, the humour and plot meant that the boys in the class enjoyed the story too. Very suitable for Year 2 children who are just starting on chapter books, but also appealing to Year 3 and 4, although you could read it to children from 6 years old.

There is lots of toilet humour (dragon poo) and exciting plot, and no real danger or upset! Great fun to read.

Please accept my apologies for the late review. My daughter (9) and I read this together for bedtimes and we absolutely loved it!! It has all the things she loves in it, and just the right amount of giggles and storyline. I’ll be recommending this to my year 4 class as well. Thanks so much for the arc.

A hilarious, mythical romp sure to have you laughing out loud. If fantasy stories are your child's thing then they are going to love this unconventional princess story where everything that could go wrong does. Purple moats, baby dragons, unicorns called Poop and mermaids to impress - will it all work out in the end?! Although this is the second book in a series they are both stand alone.

Thoroughly enjoyed Do Not Mess with the Mermaids by Michelle Robinson, Sharon Davey. Thanks to #BloomsburyChildrensBooks and #NetGalley for the electronic ARC copy for review. #DoNotMesswiththeMermaids

🧜‍♀️🦄👸For my nearly 7 year old, there are three MASSIVE tick boxes in this story. Helpfully, there’s one for me too… 🐉 It’s also clear from the title that this is a book with attitude.

So here we are cheering hoorah and huzzah for all things Wondermere! Miss B and I have read this together, and it’s a total hit.

Princess Grace is an awesomely stereotype smashing princess. She’s a knight, a sportsperson, gets stuck in with animal care and very much talks back. Plus, she’s the luckiest little daredevil in the kingdom.

She’s not the only cool thing in this book though. We meet a kaleidoscope of characters for kids to love. Set against Grace is her sister Portia, very much the sensible brains of the partnership. Poop the unicorn is hilariously disobedient - Miss B loves nothing more than talking in opposites so I feel like this is her spirit animal. The baby dragon (Dennis, natch) is completely adorable and we both want one. The mermaids are perfectly haughty (I always suspected they’d have that side to them) but thaw eventually. Along with the imps and witches, we have a pantomime scale cast in which to submerge. But that’s what makes it so absorbing. This adventure maintains enough peril to keep readers engaged without ever taking things so far that they might genuinely worry. Princess Grace’s Wondermere really is a place that my girl was happy to get lost in.

My daughter absolutely loved this book. It literally has everything in it - princesses, unicorns, mermaids and a very cute little dragon. Not only does this book have brilliant characters but there is also a magical adventure to enjoy too.

In the story the two princess sisters, Grace and Portis (who are not typical princesses and often break the rules) are preparing for a visit from the Mermaid Queen. Nothing ever goes quite to plan in Wondermere and just before the visit they discover a dragon egg whilst swimming in the purple moat of the castle. Can they help Dennis, the baby dragon, fly back to his nest before he gets discovered by the royal visitors or will the visit end in disaster?

There are so many funny parts in this story and my daughter giggled along, laughing out loud in so many places. What a fantastic series. This is the second book in the series and I have already ordered 'Do Not Disturb The Dragons' which comes first (although they are stand alone books.)
Thank you to Bloomsbury Publishing and NetGalley for this eARC. We have pre ordered this so we can add it to our bookshelves on 8th July.
