I really enjoyed this book and being a part of a British Red Cross nurse's adventure. I think the ending felt kind of rushed, but it was entertaining read. I think people that like "Call the Midwife" would enjoy this historical fiction during WW2. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This is an emotional story based around the war. The characters are well developed and believable. The ending was a bit of disappointment.

Historical fiction set during WWII. During the repeated bombing of the cities, the Red Cross recruited aides from orphanges. These young women would set aside personal lives and plans to aid in the rescue and care of thos wounded during the bombing campaigns. Without them, many more people would have died. Glynis Peters has given readers a look into the lives of 3 of these Red Cross aides and their often heartbreaking duties. As young as they were, they still gave of themselves. The book does have a touch of romance but is mainly the story of these brave people in caring for others.

This is the second book I've read by Glynis Peters and just as with The Secret Orphan, I found her writing and storytelling to be absolutely phenomenal here in The Red Cross Orphans. What an excellent, unforgettable historical fiction read! I absolutely LOVED it.

I simply couldn't put this book down, as I was hooked from start to finish. The reader comes alongside orphan Kitty who volunteers with the Red Cross to help out in the war effort and finds unbreakable bonds of friendship is those serving alongside her. There is devastation and heartache wound in amidst the expected peril of war and the darkness it involves, and in that there as quite an emotional punch (this is my warning to have your tissues ready). Yet this story also explores the courage and bravery of those brave women who placed themselves on this difficult path and I found it incredibly inspirational and powerful all at the same time.

I loved how immersive the writing was here and the ways in which my heart raced alongside the characters. In fact, by the time the story was finished I felt as if I had gained new friendships with these characters as if I walked through the story with them myself. The characters were so real and genuine, and definitely made the book for me. I won't soon forget them and this story.

I was beyond excited when I realized that this book is the first in a series, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where the author goes with the next book!

Many thanks to Harper Collins UK and NetGalley for the gifted e-copy!

I enjoyed this book so much. It was romance, heartache, pride, sadness. I felt as if I was living Kitty's life as I read the story and was feeling what she felt. She was such a brave character and grew so much throughout the book. I was cheering her on as I read and especially when she came home to her aunt and uncle to visit to realize they would be okay. That she didn't have to be their rock or be afraid that she couldn't live her life outside of their home. They had come to find other things, like a relationship with Christ and doing things in the church, to fill their hearts.

"This book was provided to me by NetGalley and One More Chapter. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. All opinions are my own.”

Synopsis
Orphan Kitty Pattison is young, naïve and ready to do her bit for the war effort when she volunteers with the Red Cross and pledges to help those most in need. It’s one of the most nerve-wracking moments of her life, but then she meets fellow volunteers Joan Norfolk and Trixie Dunn, and a bond of friendship is forged in the fire of life on the wards during the Blitz.

Days are spent nursing injured soldiers back to life and nights are spent anticipating bombs falling from the sky and then trawling through the wreckage to save who she can, but the light and laughter she finds with Jo and Trix see Kitty through the darkest hours.

And when Kitty starts growing closer to handsome Canadian doctor Michael McCarthy, it’s her friends who help her to find the courage to realise that no matter what has happened or what is to come, we all deserve love…

Review:
As we follow kitty through out this book, she finds love, friendship and different places of work. This is based in ww2 in the United Kingdom in 1941. As she travels from Birmingham, England to Scotland to durham, United Kingdom she always seems to find Michael McCarthy. Seems like no matter were she went he was always there. I think what made me loose interest is that there was no action. The characters were always safe, she kept the story safe. It was still enjoyable. I think more action would've motivated me to finish sooner.

This is a well written historical novel thats very easy to read. I did find it a little slow going in places though but I loved the characters and the storyline. I would definitely recommend especially for those that love historical fiction.

Thank you Netgalley.

Kitty and Michael meet in Birmingham at a local dance. Kitty is a Red Cross nurse, Michael is a doctor from Canada. They find out they are both orphans that have been raised by family members. They end up working together on many rescue missions after the area is bombed by the enemy. They get separated several times throughout the course of the book, but always seem to find their way back to each other.

This book has great storytelling. The storyline was easy to follow with a handful of characters. I loved the friendships Kitty made with the other nurses and hospital staff. It was a reminder that good things did happen during World War II. I was a little disappointed at the abrupt ending, but am excited to read more about Kitty and Michael in the next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for the ARC of this book in exchanged for my honest review!

When Kitty Pattison leaves home to volunteer for the Red Cross, she has no idea what she’s going to, but on arrival in Birmingham she meets fellow recruits Joan and Trixie. Bonded together by friendship, the girls help each other cope with the demands of caring for the injured, and hiding from the bombs being dropped every night. But in amongst the tragedies, can Kitty find love?

The Red Cross Orphans is a gentle story, bringing to the fore the work done by the many volunteers of the Red Cross during World War II. There were times when it started drifting into romantic novel territory, but mainly the historical side won.

Well done Glynis Peters for finding a new angle on the war to write about.

We follow the lives of 3 young women who are training to become nurses and do their part for their country in the war against Germany. Kitty, Trix and Jo become close friends during their training and remain friends when they are stationed in different locations across the UK.
This is an endearing story that shows the hardships endured and surmounted, the maturing of young naive girls into successful, confidant young women and romantic liaisons that could last a lifetime.
I loved all the characters, even the ones you love to hate and found them to be fully developed. Although this story takes place during a very difficult time, the story is light and easy to read with my one complaint being that it ended very abruptly for me. It felt like there should have been more story, leaving me with the feeling that I was missing something crucial to a fulfilling ending.
This is a book that will be enjoyed by many engaging your need for romance, action and whimsy.

This is a story about an orphaned girl named Kitty who volunteers for the Red Cross during WWII. She meets two other girls, and form a strong friendship that carries them through while they nurse wounded soldiers and the difficult nights of bombardment. Very heart felt. Kitty is a Red Cross nurse who meets Michael, a Canadian medic, in Birmingham. The story follows Kitty's nursing training and friendships as well as her developing relationship with Michael. Word of warning...the book ends with a cliff-hanger which brings it down to 4 stars

Historical drama set during World War Two. Heart warming and heart breaking as we follow the lives of Kitty and her pals.

The Red Cross Orphans is an emotional roller coaster of a story somewhat typical of the genre but none the less charming and enjoyable. I really liked the characters and that made it a happy read despite some of the hardships and heartaches portrayed.

The Red Cross Orphans is a perfectly good story but for me it doesn't ever seem to get going and just bumbles along.

Not a bad read, just for me not a great one.
