The story is told over a dual timeline. The author manages to weave the stories together so well. The pace is so slow. It was interesting to hear the characters backstories.

I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

Found this book wasn’t what I was expecting. The description has sounded great. It was very slow. So slow I almost gave up. It did eventually pick up but not enough to say that I enjoyed it

An ok read but for me it just felt too slow and I struggled to stay engaged. Took a few attempts to finish.

Wow! I loved this one. Loved the characters of Mari and Lily, they were the perfect siblings, arguing with each other but clearly cared for and lived each other immensely.

Fox was a great character working thr cold cases, trying to get to the bottom of the baby Michael case.

Throughly enjoyed it and will definitely recommend and read more by this author

Not for me I’m afraid, far too dull and dragged out and there was nothing to connect to on an emotional level

This was a really enjoyable read. Thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and how it unfolded with the characters. I've read others from this author which I enjoyed and this one does not disappoint. It had me hooked right from the beginning. I've read a few bland books lately and it was no good to read something with a great storyline that was easy and engaging.

Highly recommended.

Thank you Headline and Netgalley.

I enjoyed the previous books from this author and this one did also not disappoint. This author has a clever way of creating likeable characters and a sense of mystery from the start. This was an enjoyable mystery and I would recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book about 2 sisters whose mum has committed suicide, or had she? I loved the intricacies in the development of both protagonists. It had grit, mystery and sometimes emotional areas too. Definitely worth a shot.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for giving me this arc in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I love Erin Kinsley’s previous books so had high expectations for this latest release. I absolutely loved it particularly because it was so easy to become emotionally attached to the characters. The storyline was superb - Erin has done it again!

Lily and Marietta are the daughters of a woman that has walked in the sea and drowned.
Sisters that have been distant for a number of years are thrown back together following the death of their mother, Alice, and are trying to come to terms with the sudden death of their mum and trying to understand did she commit suicide or was it an accident.
Meanwhile DI Fox has a cold case from 20 years ago and seems that Alice may have a connection to.
Full of twists and turns while they all uncover the mystery

When Alice walks into the sea she leaves behind her two daughters & her dog. When there is a verdict of suicide daughter Lily, who was very close to her mother is devastated & her sister Marietta, who had been wandering the world is racked with guilt at not being closer to her mother. When trying to organise a funeral & who they should tell they realise how little they knew Alice.

DI Fox is approaching retirement & is now assigned cold cases. One has troubled him for years- the death of a small baby found in a spinney with evidence that someone tried to burn them.

The reader knows these two must have a connection but it is a bit of a long drawn out process till we find out what. This was a bit of a slow read & I think I kept reading to make sure the dog was alright! However eventually the dots were joined. For me this was a 3.5* read- the dog got it raised to 4! Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

I seem to be giving nothing but mediocre three star reviews recently and I’m afraid this is another. The book is not a thriller it’s more a drama with some crime and a mainly family sage type plot some of the book was not up to Erin Kinsleys usual standards in particular when Mari first finds out about her mother. It’s a very disjointed section.
Not an awful book by any means and it does grip you as you get into it so well worth a read.

This book felt more like an obligation to read.

Alice Ansley decides to swim out to sea and see how far she can get before drowning. The lifeboat in Selmouth is sent out to rescue her. But she dies on the way back to harbour. Her two daughters, Marietta and Lily are devastated by her death. Marietta has been away from home travelling around the world while Lily is married and has suffered terribly after several miscarriages.

DI Russell Fox is close to retirement and works on cold cases. He is determined to solve the brutal murder of a baby boy, who has never been identified after being burnt beyond recognition and left in a shallow grave.

I found the characters tedious. The girls’ reaction to their mother’s death was far too dramatized. Yes, of course, they were shocked by their mother’s death and were entitled to take it badly, but this bit of the storyline seemed to be played to the hilt. Lily was especially irritating.

I did enjoy the cold-case murder inquiry. Fox was appropriately named because he went after the killer with tenacity.

I could not put this book down! So much so that I was reading well into the night and into the morning! It's a emotional story that has you gripped from the very 1st page. I wouldn't hesitate to tell friends and family to read this book and I can't wait to read the next book by Erin Kinsley.

This is a book that keeps the reader engaged throughout. The author manages to portray the varied emotions skilfully , the dialogue is authentic and the characters are well described and believable. The reader is able to empathise with the main characters and especially with DI Russell Fox who is a true delight, a dedicated, caring police officer. I would love to read more about his cold cases.
A sad subject matter but a good read.

5* I could not put this book down! A gripping, compelling and emotional family story that keeps you turning the pages. Kept me reading into the small hours and picked it up again as soon as my eyes opened. Highly recommended and cannot wait for the next title by Erin Kinsley.
