I read this book as an armchair travel. I enjoyed reading about the history and places of interest along the path. Photographs also accompany the text. There are detailed maps and directions for wishing to make the trek. Enjoy the trip

I love walking so this is a very welcome publication, with its clear and detailed guide to Offa's Dyke Path, which traverses the Welsh-English border from Chepstow to Prestatyn. Part of the route passes into England, mainly into Shropshire, and follows the remains of the Dyke as far as possible.

As you would expect, the guide is sectioned into daily walk segments, some of which can also be split. Useful information is provided before each section of notable towns/features along the route, with practical details on transport, facilities, food, and accommodation provided after.

Maps are very detailed, with the trail clearly marked and there is a great deal of information in the route details about the landmarks and features along each of the sections. There is also a section at the end of the guide giving websites and contact emails/phone numbers, plus the OS maps a serious walker will need to complete the route.

The route is traversed south to north, so if you are planning on starting from Prestatyn you may also wish to find a guide that covers the walk in that direction.

I am very keen to walk this particular trail, so will definitely be buying this guide.

I was sent an advance review copy of this book by Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion, in return for an honest appraisal.

Not Necessarily for the Casual Reader

This is a detailed, almost step by step, "Official National Trail Guide" to the path. It seems that this would be a valuable guide to add to one's advanced Offa's Dyke hike preparations, or a pleasant trip down memory lane for someone who has already walked a fair bit of the path. But for the interested novice this seemed to be both too much and too little. Too much detail for day dreaming, and yet too little for capturing the larger spirit of the walking enterprise. I enjoyed perusing this, but ended up skimming quite a bit. (Please note that I received a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

I want to go to there!!!! I’ve actually been to Chepstow Castle which is absolutely gorgeous and worth a stop. The book itself is exactly the book I would want to have as my guide to the path. The full color maps are detailed and well marked. The photos are inviting and make me want to see all the views. The book provides a history of the path and the area before getting into the path itself. They divide the path into 12 sections which can either be done in a day or broken up to allow for more side explorations. At the start of each section the guide provides information about the distance, ascent, and descent and an overview. From there it provides a list of the places not to be missed along the way with detailed descriptions. The description of the trail itself is detailed so that no one will get lost. It even provides information about side excursions from the path that are not to be missed. The book made the path seem very doable and the people I would see wondering the fields on my trips to Britain seem less insane for going on rambles through the fields. The publisher has a few other guides for other paths that I really want to take a look because I can see myself doing the Cotswold Way and the South Downs Way. They even have one for the Camino de Santiago which is on my bucket list.

Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and Francis Lincoln for the ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this walking trails book. I was not familiar with Offa's Dyke Path but hiking a walking trail is definitely on my bucket list. Britain has several National Trails that are maintained and marked crossing public and private lands. I've seen the beginning of one that starts in Bath and ends in the Cotswolds. This book is just the kind of helpful, step by step direction you would need for undertaking such an adventure. For my American brain I had to look up a couple of words, like when it suggested I head into the dingle (a deep wooded valley). The book has several maps and gives distances in miles and kilometers. It has photos of the trails and historical sites on or near the trail. There are also suggestions for towns for sleeping, camping, eating etc. If I were planning to hike any of Britains Trail system this is the kind of book I would want for my guide. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group-White Lion for an temporary ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.

This is a truly delightful book, and I'm now planning to walk the Path over the recommended 12 days in late September.

As someone who's new to walking books, I find this one to be extremely detailed. Close-up maps are provided for each section of the Path, alongside almost step-by-step instructions for keeping to it, as well as comments on how strenuous or easy certain sections are. Amenities along the way including campsites are noted. Cultural places of note along the way are described and recommended, although some require detours from the Path. The author of the book is clearly in love with the Path from the way he writes about it.

There are plenty of photos of included, although they're not very impressive on my monochrome Kobo screen. I plan to purchase a print copy of this book for my trek in September.

NOTE: My review is for the 2021 version.

I thought this was the perfect walking book: clear maps and well-described routes. I am reviewing without having had the opportunity to test one of the routes as we don't live in Wales but it has really whetted my appetite for doing some of the sections in this book (not sure I'm up to doing the whole thing!) Great photos too of things to look out for along the way. This is definitely a book I would recommend and buy.

The offa’s dyke walk winds itself along a well trodden path from through the Welsh hills from Chepstow to Prestatyn or in reverse, read the book first then decide. Perfect prep and planning guide to do the walk, where to start and why, milestones and spots along the route etc.. Excellent research from the author so you don’t have to. Will definitely be picking this book up again in the future. Thank you #NetGalley for the copy to review.
