Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book.

Really enjoyed this book. A few twists and kept me guessing until the very end

One person is dead...there are six (or maybe more) possible suspects. Does someone have a secret they want kept hidden so badly that they would be willing to kill for it? Yeah, just about all of them!! This was exciting from the very beginning and kept my interest throughout. It's the perfect whodunit thriller for those looking for a snowy winter atmosphere.

7 different characters united by a love of birds meet up in a closed and deserted nature reserve to observe a murmuration of starlings . One of them soon ends up dead, but who is the killer? Each character has a "secret", and these are revealed during the course of the book. Each chapter is narrated by one of the characters, giving their version of events which I found sometimes a little annoying as having so many characters I had to keep flipping back and forth to remind myself of the story!

I can't say that any of the characters were particularly likeable and they all kept running off into the woods which made the read quite a slow burner for me. The middle picked up a little and then the ending just felt rushed.

The layout of the nature reserve was difficult to picture; a map of it would have been a really useful addition to enable us to picture where everyone was at various points. I just pictured them walking round in circles which then made the story a bit pointless!

Having said all that, I was drawn into the story and wanted to get to the end to find out who the killer was, and I liked how some of the characters turned out so differently to first impressions!

I liked that we got to read from all of the characters points of views, it helps you get to know each and form your suspicions. The ending did have a twist I didn't see coming. The book starts off promising, but the middle
does drag a bit. All the characters are just wandering around in the snow wondering who the killer is. I liked that Emma was deaf, it added another layer to her character and her terror. I did figure out who the killer was pretty easily but the surprise was more why and what happens in the end after. I wish there was more
action in the middle or maybe a few more juicy secrets.
Over all a solid read.

Seven friends, one killer. You can run but you can’t hide.

Who wouldn’t get attracted with that! Lots of characters and different POVs but nothing to be confused about. Each has their own quirkiness. Most are unlikable but mysterious. I love the atmospheric setting and the whodunnit that will keep you guessing. And the big reveal at the end is totally unexpected. I like the author's writing style and always check out her furture works.

Emily has been trying to form a relationship with her estranged older sister Lauren. She even joined her nature/bird watching group hoping to find a connection with what Lauren loves best, thought Emily would much rather stay indoors than trek around a nature reserve. But as she finds herself joining the other 6 members on a winter hike, she has no idea that their lives are about to take a dangerous turn when one of them ends up dead. Not everything is as what it seems and the other six have to figure out who they can trust and more importantly - who among them is the killer?

I enjoy reading this author's Paige Northwood's series and thought this one was good as well. I like reading all the POV's from the members. It does go back and forth a lot with the switching of the characters so I had to pay extra attention to each one. As you learn more about each character, secrets are revealed that make everyone tied to one another. It's a guessing game as to who and why someone in the group would want to kill one of them. Overall a good read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you Netgalley and Avon/Avon Books UK for the opportunity to read this book.

A very atmospheric read and perfect as a winter read. I read it in December and it was great. I love a book with a good twist!!! highly recommend for thriller fans.

It was a little too long winded for me. I found myself glazing over entire pages and just hoping we would get where we needed to go quicker.

The ending was twisty with a lot of layers, which was okay. But it just took for too long to get there to keep my focus.

An ok read
Was slow in places
Doesn’t mean that somebody else wouldn’t love it
This is just my view
Thanks NetGalley

Emily is staying with her estranged sister Lauren at Christmas when she gets roped in to a bracing boxing day walk at a nearby nature reserve with her Sister's colleagues and Nature group.

Relations between the unlikely group are somewhat strained after a previous incident in the pub, and it seems like each of them has something to hide from their 'friends'.

Lauren and Maura both work at the nature reserve, the others are all 'outsiders' but have formed a 'friendship group' due to their enjoyment of walking the reserve and birdwatching.

As well as an excuse to get together at Christmas, the boxing day walk has also been planned to coincide with a starling murmuration that the group are excited to witness.

The group set out together, but soon become separated. And then a gunshot rings out ....

One of the group is dead, and another of the group killed them.

The beautiful nature reserve suddenly seems like a terrifying place to be, and each of them must decide who they can trust as the battle the snow and treacherous conditions to make it back to the nature reserve's visitor centre (and safe place) before it gets dark.

Or before the killer strikes again ....

An intriguing and fascinating whodunit, with multiple perspectives, and a wide cast of characters. It’s always difficult to pull one of these off, but Nell Pattison does a great job. I’m taking away one star because the book meanders close to the end. However, full marks for pulling it together. I did guess some of the twists and turns, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

I want to first say that this was an interesting read, did I like it? Let's just say there were some issues. There's also a pretty sneaky thing in the epilogue. So, sneaky in fact it got the last snowflake in my rating bar.

Allow me to explain. I loved the concept of this book! It’s one of my favorite plot genres, a 'locked room mystery'. You have 7 friends - 1 is a victim - 1 is a killer and the others must run…. Definitely my kind of novel, however one thing about 'locked room mystery' novels is everything has to run like clockwork. ESPECIALLY - if the story is happening all in ONE night. Like we have here.

To start with it was very slow to get to our ending. To much "blah blah" = skimming pages until we get to our twists & answers! We have 7 people, that's seven backgrounds we have to get through. If you add any other kind of "extra micro story" to one or more of these characters, that's just going to bongs us down with too much information.
Having a deaf character was a creative move. It adds an extra element to the story that bumps up the tension. But when the deafness is brought up repetitive in the story it's too much. We know one of her devices is died, we know she lost the other one and she can't hear anyone. You don't need to repeat it.

Honestly, I didn't like any of the characters and couldn't connect with them. They were selfish and horrible, all with their own secrets and I wasn't rooting for any one of them. They were all making one bad decision after another as various people head off on their own and others try and find them.

Ahhhhh but the one very interesting thing that came out of this….drumroll please 🥁 🥁 🥁

The sneaky, two-timing, jealous bitch of a sister that's what!!! So, yeah did I have some issues with this book. *nods head up and down* but that sister in the end what a last smart epilogue.

But this isn't a forever bookshelf book in the least.

This book wasn't my favourite, however it was still thrilling and interesting. I liked the fact that everyone had a secret and was trying to hide something from the rest of the group, however I think there were too many perspectives to read from. I found a lot of them really interesting, however some of them I felt weren't as good to read as others. Despite not enjoying the book overall as much as I thought I would, it did keep me interested and had a lot of shocking/thrilling moments throughout.

I wanted to enjoy this book more but it just didn't hit the mark for me unfortunately. This book is told through multiple narratives and it becomes clear there's lots of secrets within the group and this never ends well! I didn't particularly like any of the characters. I did enjoy the setting for this book however. It is still a readable book and a few twists to keep the plot running along, however it was just too many silly decisions and running about for me!

I enjoyed this slightly different take on the “group of friends and one gets murdered” idea. The characters are drawn together by a shared hobby which allows a more diverse group and there are more connections between each other than they actually realise.

A Boxing Day hike organised by Lauren through a closed nature reserve goes horribly wrong and we start to see the characters unravel. Lauren’s sister Emily is trying to reconnect with her sibling without much luck and so she gravitates to Morna who clearly dislikes Lauren. Ben is seemly obsessed with Emily after failing to get together with Lauren and Kai is a very unlikely bird fancier. The there is know it all Alec rubs people up the wrong way and something is troubling quiet Dan.

The book is pacy and each character gets their turn to give their version of events but we don’t find out the surprising truth of what has really happened till the very end.

I really don’t like leaving negative reviews and so it is with a heavy heart that I say that my opinion about this book is not a good one; it is only my opinion and I know that other readers have thoroughly enjoyed it, and it has certainly received other very good reviews.
The premise of this book certainly sounded full of promise - promises of a gripping, thrilling, chilling story that would apparently leave me with whiplash from the astounding twist at the end.
A group of friends assemble at a nature reserve one snowy Boxing Day to witness a murmuration of starlings but then one of them is found shot dead. Therein starts a chain of events that sees the group attempt to establish which one
of them was the killer and to get out of the reserve and out of danger.
The book started really well, the prologue was good but then it all seemed to slide downhill quite rapidly.
The pace of story felt extremely slow and poorly plotted. The group made a series of extremely bad decisions and the story dragged so much that the characters seemed to be walking around this nature reserve for DAYS in the dark rather than the one evening in which the story is set.
The back story of each the characters is peppered throughout the book but this information seemed to come at the most inopportune moments within the plot which I found irritating. I didn’t warm to any of the characters at all and unfortunately found myself skimming some of the book as I really wasn’t invested in their implausible backgrounds.
I think a map of the nature reserve would have helped the reader to picture where they all were at any given moment as, to my mind, the reserve seemed to be absolutely enormous and I struggled to imagine the setting despite the lengthy descriptions.
The ending left me a bit cold too I’m afraid, it felt a bit rushed and as though the author decided to throw anything and everything at it.
There was a good quote in the book that sums it all up quite nicely though which reads: “No more of this idiocy, running around a nature reserve in the snow in the middle of the night. This ends here.” Hoorah!
This book just wasn’t my cup of tea. A disappointing 2 stars from me.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Nell Pattison never fails to keep you guessing with their thrillers. Hide is a little different than the previous books as it's more of a locked room mystery. I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to more from Nell.

Having read 2 previous books by Nell patison I looked forward to this. The story is based around a group of bird watchers going out on a nature reserve to watch birds. When one of the group is murdered the evening out takes a dark twist. I found the storyline long and drawn out where the group try to make their way back to safety. They seemed to go around in circles in a snowy dark Forrest which became a monotonous with no major twists or turns.

Seven members of a nature group in Lincolnshire decide to meet up on Boxing Day to have a hike round the local nature reserve and try to watch a starling murmuration.

Lauren works at the nature reserve. Her and Emily are sisters but were estranged for 11 years and have only recently got back in touch, earlier this year. There are lots of emotions and past recriminations simmering beneath the surface and they're still trying to suss each other out and to forget what happened years ago.

The other members are Alec, Ben, Dan, Kai and Morna, and they're all of differing ages and characters. They're an unusual collection of people, more acquaintances than friends, and all seem to have their own intriguing secrets to hide.

When one of the party is murdered with a shotgun, we're taken on a tense, traumatic and terrifying trek around the nature reserve as the group try to work out who carried out the killing, how to avoid being the next victim and how to alert the authorities. They seem to keep selecting the least favourable option every time, like one of those choose your own adventure books, and I was just waiting for the worst to happen at every turn!

Overall, this was an intense, claustrophobic and twisty read and I was never sure who to trust. I kept suspecting each of them and was also wondering whether an outside influence was to blame. The story was told from the viewpoint of each character and I was trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together but failed miserably!

It was slightly slow at times and most of the characters were really frustrating but it was entertaining and held my interest and I couldn't wait to find out who and why!

I'm surprised. I really expected to love this since I've loved Pattison's other Paige Northwood books and I found this completely underwhelming.

At first, I was excited to see the different points of view in the book as I tried to figure out who the killer was. However, that excitement quickly turned to annoyance as I kept forgetting who was narrating. To me, this means there wasn't a distinct enough voice for each character. The women seemed easy enough, but I kept having to remind myself of the differences between Ben, Dan, and Kai. Too much work to enjoy the reading experience.

As for the big reveal, that was also underwhelming. It honestly seemed kind of stupid on many fronts. I'd delve into that deeper here, but: spoilers.

The positive thing about this book is Pattison's continued representation of people are Deaf/hard of hearing. Emily's cochlear implant wasn't the focus of her identity, but it certainly was a part of it. There were some nice details in here - how a profoundly deaf person loses all sound without their implant, how a hearing sibling may become resentful of a deaf sibling when they get all the attention for services, how many families out there aren't willing to adopt children with a disability - all true and valid things. Pattison does a really nice job of presenting these issues accurately.

However, the good rep doesn't make up for the story itself. Bummer.
