'We Are All Liars' was one of the most captivating psychological thrillers I have read in a long time, in fact, it is a shame it's not due for release until December this year as I desperately want to read it again, and again.

The novel, which is told from Allie's perspective, flicks between a police interview between an anonymous figure, flashbacks gifting us an insight to the friends pasts, and their secrets, and the night the five friends spent together in an isolated cabin. It certainly makes for an interesting read!

I was reading well into the night until the screen was burning my eyes, but I just HAD to know what happens, and I was not disappointed, the final twist is jaw-dropping! This is one book that will definitely have a place on my bookshelf once it is released!

This book follows five best friends who are coined the 'fierce five'. Their friendship runs deeper than blood but one day, one incident truly overruled all of their lives. As life often does, it got in the way of their friendship and they met less frequently but when an invite for Gail's birthday arrives, the 'fierce five' are finally reunited. In what begins as a great birthday celebration in a remote cabin up in Scotland, the storm rolls in and things take a lethal turn. It soon becomes clear that each friend has a dark secret that they are not ready to share but when they are forced to confront what is happening in the cabin, it all spills out.
It turns out all of the friends have had many reasons to lie, to protect their very precious secrets but does one of them hold a grudge so deep that it could turn murderous?
The ending completely blind-sighted me, I didn't expect it coming whatsoever. I felt a little frustrated by the way it ended, it kind of felt like one of those films in which you invested hours into which turned out to all be a lie but for this book which is called 'We Are All Liars' the ending is actually incredibly smart, it's just not what I wanted to happen and that's not Carys's fault!

If you are a fan of Lucy Foley, then you are sure to love this book!

Carys Jones latest book We Are All Liars tells the story of the Fierce Five, a group of girls who have been best friends since they first met. But as they grow older, the bonds of friendship are growing further apart by the year. It’s the little white lies that they tell to each other which have devastating consequences for their friendships and lives.

The five meet in a remote cabin in the Scottish highlands in a last ditch effort to rekindle their close ties but stuck in a snowstorm, their worlds are blown apart.

We Are All Liars is a thoroughly entertaining thriller. I read Jones’ The List last year and with her latest book, the author has succeeded in creating a story with a twist that you just don’t see coming. I love the different characteristics of the five girls and we can probably all relate it to people we know; the peacemaker, the extrovert, the loner!

The setting adds to the suspense and feeling of dread and anxiety which is a constant feature in the book. The story develops along at a good pace with flashbacks interspersed from the characters’ past which gave a great insight into the group’s dynamics and the fragility of relationships as people get older and life changes.

I loved the ending and literally gasped out loud when the twist was revealed. The sign of a good thriller is when you are still thinking of the twist well after you’ve finished reading the book! It really makes you think about what white lies can do and how dangerous they can be.

Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

This should appeal to keen readers of Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley.

Rating: 4.1/5

The accompanying blurb suggested that this would be perfect for fans of Lucy Foley's "The Hunting Party" and Ruth Ware's "In A Dark, Dark Wood". Given that I thoroughly enjoyed both of those books I was naturally tempted to give "We Are All Liars" a try. However, I have been lured into reading novels by similar promises in the past that have subsequently proven to be disappointingly misleading, so whilst hopeful, I was still prepared to find myself being let down. I need have had no such concerns. Not only are comparisons the two aforementioned works understandable and justified, but the influence of Ruth Ware, in particular, is evident in a number of aspects of Carys Jones's writing.

As you will glean from the official synopsis, the main setting for the story is a secluded Scottish cabin, where five lifelong friends - "The Fierce Five" - have gathered to celebrate the 35th birthday of one of their number. The setting is a fine choice and provides just the kind of atmospheric backdrop that Ruth Ware is so accomplished at choosing for her novels. None of the five friends (Stacie, Gail, Emily, Diana and Allie) are entirely likeable and each exhibits character flaws to lesser or greater degrees. From quite early on I did wonder how this group of individuals had actually managed to remain friends for such a long time.

Although the main narrative is set on the weekend of the birthday celebrations in the Scottish cabin, this is interspersed with regular historical flashbacks to various events in the lives of "The Fierce Five". These flashbacks are not chronologically ordered, nor are they signposted to tell you exactly when they relate to - this only becomes apparent from the content. I have to admit that in the early chapters I did find that there was a lot of information to try to assimilate, whilst simultaneously trying not to confuse one character with another. If I were to aim a criticism in the direction of the author, then it would be that these opening sections could have been a little more reader friendly.

However, that one small point aside, Carys Jones has succeeded in delivering a thoroughly entertaining mystery thriller: The characterisation is strong and authentic, supported by well-executed dialogue. The pace of the novel is generally very good and there are sections of palpable tension and suspense. And pulling all of those elements neatly together is a plot that has been carefully and tightly constructed.

Definitely one to add to your reading list.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.

Well this certainly cooled me down in the middle of our British heatwave! 🥵❄️

A brilliant novel set primarily in a snowy Scottish cabin, a group of long-time friends (nicknamed The Fierce Five), face up to their underlying tensions and lies. It was utterly captivating and I was kept on tenterhooks at the end of each chapter. I thoroughly enjoy a psychological novel that unpicks an interesting group dynamic, and #WeAreAllLiars certainly does that! It was interesting to explore how five women, who have grown up together, have changed within their friendship group. I loved how Jones really delved into each of the characters individually and the natural roles that they undertook, but something really resonated with Allie. I thought her characterisation was so strong and I am going to miss her now that I’ve finished the book!

We are all Liars is a book that on the premise seems pretty straight forward.

5 friends all gather in a cabin in the Scottish North and when a snow storm hits, things go wrong very fast. I found the main story pretty mild as it went, a lot of it seemed predictable and not very fresh.
However, there is a twist in the very very end that showed me how wrong I was, and how entertaining this book actually is!

Wow, this was gripping right from the start. My heart was in my mouth for most of this book. I loved all the twists and turns and how the characters are all so brutal and torn and fragile, and also how each of them are broken and whether their relationship will mend or be broken…. Forever or is it? Absolutely brilliant and clever and wicked.

Mind blowing.
Allie, Stacie, Diana, Emily and Gail have been by each other's sides for as long as they can remember. The Fierce Five. Best friends forever. But growing up has meant growing apart. And little white lies have grown into devastating secrets. When Gail invites the increasingly estranged friends to reunite at her Scottish cabin, it could be the opportunity to mend old wounds and heal the cracks in their friendship. But when a freak snowstorm rocks the cabin and one of the girls is found dead on the ice, their weekend away becomes a race against time - and each other - to get off the mountain alive. And in the end, whose story can you trust, when everything was founded on lies to begin with?
Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for giving me an advanced copy.
