This was just an intriguing insight into what will almost be a hugely popular novel. What was most noticeable was the lack of chemistry between the two characters in the opening chapters.. I imagine this is to prevent the reader from jumping to conclusions in the early stages. Overall though I am really looking forward to continue reading this to see what unfolds.

I adore Sally Rooney's prior novels, especially 'Conversations with Friends', so I was excited to read this sneak peek. I have had the novel on order for months now and I find myself even more excited for the full release! Felix and Alice are strangers on a date. Felix is local; Alice is a visitor to the area. They both seem to be holding something back, their conversation underscored by the mystery of what they don't say to each other. I look forward to getting to know these two characters better!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Difficult to write a review for an extract but so far so very good. I like Sally Rooney's succinct style of writing and the characters seem real. The dialogue is interesting with at least as much weightiness given to the unsaid. I want to read the whole novel!

I have read previous books by Sally Rooney and have really liked them. I enjoyed reading this extract and look forward to reading the complete book in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for giving me the chance to preview this book. I’m already hooked and can’t wait to finish the story. Sally Rooney has done it again!

I thoroughly enjoyed Normal People, so I had high hopes for this extract. It was great, but I really don’t think it is possible to give a clear assumption of how the book will go on such a short extract! Three stars purely because of the difficulty in rating the work based on the length - what I read was great, but I would need more to be able to have any genuine opinion!

It is difficult to write a relevant review on a single chapter of a book, but these first pages got me hooked! I loved Sally Rooney's other books, so I had high hopes, and for now, the start did not disappoint : i directly went to pre-order it. Can't wait to read the rest.

It’s extremely hard to rate and judge a book from just one chapter but you immediately see that it follows Sally Rooney’s usual style of writing which I enjoy very much. Alice, a writer, meets Felix in a Dublin bar. Felix works very reluctantly in a warehouse. You appreciate that Alice is diffident, bit mysterious and enigmatic and that Felix is suspicious of her and that she unsettles him. The encounter is awkward, tentative and strange and you certainly want to know more. The author has an innate ability to convey a scene so well you feel as if you are a fly on the wall observer. So, I’m hooked, I absolutely want to know where this encounter leads and so, nicely played Faber and Faber!!!!!! I’m just off to preorder now!

I have yet to read a Sally Rooney book but I have heard the hype around Normal people and conversations with friends so I was interested in checking this out. As far as how I felt about this, I could see myself continuing with this story, there wasn't really enough to go on to make me dislike it, the only thing I need to point out that I didn't like was the lack of speech marks when people are talking, at the beginning it was strange to read without them but then I sort of got used to it.

I received this Extract of Beautiful World, Where Are you from NetGalley, courtesy of the author and publisher.

Two characters, Alice and Felix, meet in a bar in a hotel. It seemed to me that they were on a Tinder date. Alice is subdued, reticent. They exchange the usual first meeting information, but Alice offers very little information. She is a novelist, he works in a warehouse, filling orders. It is obvious to me that this hookup was ill-fated and I was not surprised when Felix left without sealing the deal. This is where the extract ends.

I hardly know what to make of this blurb or even how to rate it. It was pretty sterile and even awkward.
No quotation marks again to mark conversation, which had me confused a time or two. I'm rating this extract a 3 out of 5.

I am hooked! I really enjoyed this little teaser (big surprise, I adore Sally Rooney). Just from the first chapter it feels like a huge departure from her last two novels and I feel an immediate connection to Alice. Truly cannot wait to read the whole thing!

After reading the first chapter, I’m intrigued and eager to find out what happens next with Alice and Felix! The writing style is similar to what I’ve come to expect from Sally Rooney, so I think fans of her previous books will be happy with her newest.

This book explores the characters thought relationships and sex, making you feel the most raw emotion that you can feel and looks at the relationship we have in the late 20s, I really enjoyed this book, felt the ending was wrapped up abit quick, but beautifully written as always

Well, I've only read a chapter but I can see that I'm already very intrigued. Alice and Felix have this mysterious vibe going on and I can't wait to know more about them and also to get to know the other two main characters that are mentioned in the plot of the book. I'm very looking forward to reading the whole book in September!

This is just a short excerpt from Sally Rooney's upcoming novel Beautiful World, Where Are You. The piece depicts a first date between a couple in Ireland. Because it's Rooney, the writing is terrific with great attention to detail. Hard to make any more judgements about the novel as the extract is very short. It leaves me excited for the novel's release.

I received an e-galley preview in return for this review.

I adore Sally Rooney. She writes the most realistic characters, and the most heartbreaking plots.

Chapter One, which was provided by Faber & Faber, took 8 minutes to read and opens with

“A woman sat in a hotel bar, watching the door.”

It is clearly set in Ireland – as one would expect of Rooney – and recounts a less than successful date between Alice, a writer who has recently moved into the town, and Felix, a local man who works in “a warehouse outside town”. Drinks are shared, the relations between them somewhat testily explored. As with Normal People, even on this first date communication was less than easy and Alice in particular seems difficult and little defensive. However, she is willing to invite Felix back to her house, the Rectory we discover, and to see her bedroom…

The language is beautiful in its simplicity, and also somewhat distances us from Alice and Felix. Rooney is really excellent at showing rather than telling – there is exquisite dialogue and no internal monologue – and on only one chapter it is hard to feel that I got to know the characters. But then, you don’t after a single date, do you?

Will be see Felix and Alice again in the novel? I suspect so and I predict that their less than stellar first date will develop into a relationship. And I am definitely intrigued by Alice.

I also like the fact that these characters seem older than those in Normal People. Old enough to have careers and to be beyond the Millenial label.

The final line of the chapter is a little unsettling as it directly addresses the reader with an imperative invitation:

“Follow her eyes now and notice the bedroom door left open, a slice of white wall visible through the banister posts.”

Synopsis
Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her. In Dublin, her best friend Eileen is getting over a break-up and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood.

Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon are still young – but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. They worry about sex and friendship and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?

One month to go and I am definitely waiting outside our local bookshop to buy this on publication day!
