A very readable first chapter (the extract I read). I couldn’t get a handle on the characters’ motivations: it was obvious from the start they were on a date, but did they even like each other? There was no chemistry between them but also no spark for either of them that made me want to know what happens next.

Nonetheless, I like Rooney’s writing, and even warmed to the unnecessary details (using her torch to find her keys, for example).

Can't wait to read the rest of it! Had me hooked. Love the Natalia Ginzburg quote in the epigraph. It's hard to say very much about such a short excerpt. The writing is colder, more distant, more controlled and icy than her previous two books, which I really dug. It also feels like a very brave choice to have a character who's a writer - I'm really interested in seeing where she'll go with that. I'm wondering if there'll be any Ben Lerner influences in this. Thanks to Netgally and the publishers for the ARC.

Wow. After just reading this extract - chapter one. It instantly drew me in, I wanted to know more! This book is going to be a big hit, just like Sally Ronney's others. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review the first chapter of this book.

Sally Rooney's 'Beautiful Word, Where are You - chapter one easily sets the scene for what will be a sure-fire hit.
Alice has recently moved into the old rectory and the same town as Felix. They meet in a bar one night where the tale begins to unfold, they drink, they talk and they walk to Alice's house. And this is where chapter one ends. It leaves the reader wanting more.....

I absolutely adore Sally Rooney and I cannot wait to read her new novel, Beautiful World Where Are You. The author has such a witty, relatable take with her writing style. I LOVED the first chapter of this book, and will be anxiously awaiting the release of the full book!

After only an extract of one chapter I am hooked on Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. I know this book is going to be amazing and I can not wait for the full installment to lose myself in. Thank you to Faber Books and Net =Galley for the opportunity to read the opening chapter.

This short extract was enough to turn my existing spark of interest into a full blown blaze. There's something about Rooney's writing that just resonates with the modern experience. Perhaps its the sense of melancholy that seems to run through everything. Anyhoo, it was enough to make me pre-order and I'm looking forward to reading the full book.

Enthralling, atmospheric, eerie, and addicting. Sally Rooney manages to capture the reader in just a few paragraphs, in what is a prelude to another brutally honest novel about relationships.

Well as always with Sally Rooney's books , I'm gripped right away and want to devour the rest. My eyes race across the page wanting to know the whole story. Can't wait to read the rest when I can.

Although not enough to gauge anything about the story, this one chapter extract gave BIG normal people/ conversations with friends vibes. Sally Rooney's style of writing never seems to get boring!

I'd of loved to have carried on reading but alas, we must wait!!

I was so excited to see the email from NetGalley approving me for an ARC of Sally Rooney's latest novel but imagine my disappointment when I realized it was only for the 1st chapter. NetGalley you big tease, you!

I loved her previous novel Normal People and this book right here most definitely gives off the same vibes. It's going to be a quiet novel but one that will have emotional pull. As with her previous novel she does not use quotation marks which will irk many readers. For me, personally, I could not care less. Her writing is so lush and evocative that quotations make no difference to me. I'm greatly looking forward to reading this novel in it's entirety. So far, from the one chapter, I will mark this 5 stars!

Thanks to NetGalley and Faber & Faber for the extract.

I went through this chapter so quickly, and it wasn’t enough. I really need more of ‘Beautiful World, Where You’ now! Sally Rooney writing is always on point, and her characters are always so raw and so real, and I’m looking forward to learning more about them. They’re both flawed and human, and real, and I can already see that this book will become another one of my favourites. September can’t come early enough!

So so excited to read this after the success of all the previous Rooney books! An enjoyable teaser that only left me wanting more.

Absolutely cannot wait for this, the first chapter only made me more excited to get into it. It doesn't tell us a huge amount which isn't a suprise given what slow burners Sally Rooney's books are but I'm looking forward to seeing where Alice and Felix's story takes them.

This extract from Sally Rooney's latest echoes much of "Normal People", the only other Rooney I've read. There is the same neglect of quotation marks, but Rooney injects it with the same rhythm that keeps someone hooked to a novel by someone like a James Ellroy, whose short, burst-like sentences are as unique to his writing as Rooney's purge of quotation marks is to hers.

The characters are still a tad bit awkward, and reminded me more than a little of the "Normal People" protagonists, but the extract by itself is generally too short to leave any real impact or to generate anything more specific than the feedback which'll rightfully laud Rooney for the ability to keep retain the immersive quality of her prose.

I have been really excited about Sally Rooney's new book. I look back at Normal People and think I love her books. Then I start to actually read her books (like this excerpt from her new one) and think maybe my memory is not accurate. Her writing style is so hard to read. It is dry and she does not use traditional punctuation or mark any dialog. Not only does it make her writing seem slow and difficult but also the grammar nerd inside me is furious. Also nothing happens. So, after reading this small sample of her upcoming book, I am unsure if I will read the full book. I will wait and see what other reviewers think because I always thought Sally Rooney was for me but now I am not so sure.

This short extract didn't really give much away, I could have done with at least 3 chapters to get a feel for the novel. It was very much a classic Sally Rooney.

Ordinarily it would be hard to review the first chapter of any book, but as it’s a Sally Rooney chapter, it reads more like a short story in itself.
Alice has moved to a small Irish town, from Dublin, and previously New York. She’s a writer and appears self assured and a little mysterious, although not intending to be.
She’s on a first date with Felix, who seems perplexed by her moving there in the first place and by her general demeanor.
They return to the house she’s renting, which turns out to be the rectory, and eventually their date fades into an awkward misunderstanding of each other. Like all of Rooney’s writing, it’s atmospheric, and packed with the fizz of potential for what’s coming next. It’s also left me eager to read the next chapter!
