I enjoyed this book, which is brightly colourful and presented simply, while conveying a great deal of information. Horse breeds are shown with selected representatives of light, medium and heavy horses, plus ponies and the Przewalski's Horse. Each horse is shown in a photograph but the background has been removed and a stylised basic drawn scene added. This concentrates our eye on the outline of the horse.
Donkeys and asses get a full spread, before we progress to horse care, stable management and the basics of riding.

Beginner riders can concentrate on the mount and ride photos. A young rider will probably enjoy the book for the horse breeds but not find much new in the riding section. For the already competent rider, there won't be enough new information. However, I could look at beautiful horses all day. A diverse set of young riders is shown, and a few of the many equestrian sports are covered.

I read an e-ARC from the publisher and Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.

What a great gift this would make for anyone who is pony mad! Even at 61, having never really grown out of the pony-mad-teen phase I loved this. The photographs and diagrams are clear and beautiful making this a very attractive book to read. Every topic you could wish for - breeds, horse care, tack care, how horses communicate, how they move, what to wear, types of clips etc is covered - a really comprehensive book and all you could want if interested in horses and riding. My thanks to DK and Netgalley for allowing me access to a digital reading copy in return for an honest review.

Horses & ponies by DK books
This wonderfully illustrated book has all the information any horse lover wants about horses, their care and riding. I asked my 9 year old to help me review this book. She told me she loved the colourful pictures of horses and ponies. And the step by step guides. Her favourite bit was the section on different horse breeds a short history with the picture describing their different features. I loved seeing her read this book as it brought back memories of my childhood. We love DK books if my daughter wants to learn something I get her the DK book on that topic as they always contain lots of pictures with short descriptions allowing children to learn without them even knowing it.
