The Boyfriend is an excellent psychological thriller that could be billed as an anti-love story. Amy's life is wonderful despite not having a relationship. Then she wakes up following a serious fall not remembering anything from the last six months - including her luxurious ski trip to celebrate her 30th or meeting and falling head over heals for Dr. Jack Stewart. Why doesn't it seem right? Who is this stranger in Amy's life? The story is filled with twists and keeps readers on their toes. Highly recommended!

The Boyfriend by Michelle Francis
Amy Kennedy has been in an accident, she's slipped on ice and her head injury has caused her to forget the last 6 months of her life. As her 30th birthday looms closer, Amy, her best friends, overbearing mother & mysterious new, seemingly perfect boyfriend Jack decide to celebrate in her Aunts beautiful, remote ski cabin in France. But with no memory, Amy starts to question the motives of her friends, Jack & her family. Is this just paranoia, as a result from her accident and memory loss? Or is Amy right to question everything & everyone around her?
The Boyfriend was a great page turner, I loved all the characters, especially Amy! I loved the way the story unfolded, with little bits of her memory returning, and interweaving interactions with the other characters. It kept me on my toes, and I loved the way the ending didn't totally play out like I thought it would, which made a nice change!
Overall, The Boyfriend was a fun, quick read, with a story and mystery that kept me glued! I'd definitely recommend and this is an easy, peasy 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 (4 & 1/2)

Now I'm pretty sure I'll be in the minority here bit it just didn't do it for me.

I was initially gripped by the synopsis, the cover and the genre... my go to is always a psychological thriller.. I personally just don't get why this was put in that genre.

I found it predictable and somewhat convenient when tying up loose ends but nothing thrilling jumped out at me. It actually started to irritate me at how far fetched the whole plot was.

Arrrrrhhh..I'm more angry at myself for actually finishing it!

1.5* purely for the synopsis and cover.

Thanks to netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the ARC.

This has been an easy read psychological thriller. I really enjoy Michelle Francis books and couldn’t wAit to get stuck into this one. I haven’t been disappointed.

Amy has been in an accident, this has resulted in her losing her memory. She finds that she has a boyfriend she cannot remember. As we read on, the pace really picks up and we see snippets of memory returning.

This is a well written and unpredictable read, I have definitely been curious how this would play out.

This is filled with twists and turns that you don’t expect. The setting adds an element of atmosphere and the ending is completely unpredictable.

A great read!! Definitely want to read more by Michelle Frances!

The premise of this book is very good, but was let down somewhat by the execution. 29 year old singleton Amy suffers a head injury after a bad fall on ice. When she comes round, she finds that she has forgotten everything that has happened in the last six months - and to her surprise, during that time she has acquired the perfect boyfriend, putting an end to a long streak of being the only single one of her group of friends. Jack really does seem to have it all, but Amy's lack of memories of him trouble her. Is he really as good as he seems, or just too good to be true?

I was keen to read this book and find out what happened, because it was a good story, but it had a lot of flaws, a lot of details surrounding law and medicine and even just the behaviour of some of the characters that didn't seem quite right. The ending in particularly seemed particularly unlikely - perhaps it was just being set up for a sequel!

With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Amy is fiercely independent, with a high-powered career, a flat of her own and tight-knit friendships. But as she approaches her thirtieth birthday, she can't help but rue the one thing she doesn't have - a relationship.

When Amy comes round following a serious fall, she doesn't remember anything from the last six months. Not even the week skiing at her aunt's luxurious chalet in Val D'Isere with her mum and best friends to celebrate her birthday. And she certainly doesn't remember being swept off her feet by the handsome Dr Jack Stewart . . .

I'm fully aware I've passed the publishing date for this and for that I'm sorry.
I really struggled to get into "The Boyfriend" by Michelle Frances.
I'd originally made one note at the start of the book that I'll add now;
(At first the 3 friends names- Amy, Lisa and Jenna had me confused who was who, especially the names Amy and Lisa I found I couldn't disipher who was who.)

I did have this problem throughout, especially as I was leaving days/weeks at a time before going back to this book.

Overall, it wasn't a bad storyline, but it also wasn't gripping enough for me. The storyline kind of gave itself away in regards to the plot/twist.

Would still read another book by this author, but this one wasn't 100% me this time.

The Boyfriend was a fairly quick moving thriller that I enjoyed as it had a different kind of plot.
Amy is in hospital when we meet her, she has had an accident, hitting her head. This unfortunately has left her with no memory of the last six months. Her friends tell her they are due to travel to Val d’Isère to celebrate her birthday along with Amy’s mum and her boyfriend Jack whom no one has met yet. Amy has no knowledge of Jack so messages him and gets no reply. Presuming she’s been ghosted she sets off with her friends to Val d’Isère. They arrive and very shortly after them so does Jack. Jack is everything Amy could have wanted but why does he make her feel uneasy. As bits of her memory start to come back is Jack really her Jack and can he be trusted.
I enjoyed this from start to finish, it had good strong characters, plenty of twists and a fairly fast pace. I would recommend this book to any thriller fans.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

A thrilling, dark and addictive read that was hard to put to down! Had me gripped from early chapters and was immediately invested in finding out the truth.

The reader discovers that Amy’s memory has been lost due to an accident, and the plot unfolds as she starts to remember her past and more importantly the truth about her boyfriend Jack.

All these characters have been created well, bringing depth to the story line, however, I found Amy’s Mother to be quite irritating and I am not sure if this was the author’s intention, or just me.

This is a great read, with a then and now time line making it intriguing and entertaining. I recommend this to anyone who likes character analysis and thriller reads. Perfect for book clubs as there are a lot of elements to discuss.

Amy has met with an accident that led to temporary memory loss. She cannot remember any detail of the last six months. So, when her best friend tells her that she had a trip planned with her friends and mother, she cannot believe it.

Her friend, Lisa, also mentions that Amy has a boyfriend. One that she met just three months prior. One that Amy doesn't remember at all.

A few days later, they are all off to the snow resort-esque home in the mountains. And when they are all snowed in, Jack Stewart, a handsome paediatric surgeon and her boyfriend, appears.

He is suave and caring and everything a good boyfriend can be. He is a bit too perfect. While others are completely taken in, Amy begins to doubt. Is he really her boyfriend? Or is he an imposter? Is her paranoia following the head injury acting up?

The book was good. It was a complete page-turner and unputdownable. Though some things were a bit unbelievable, there was always an undercurrent of tension. I wanted to get to the end as much as Amy did. The ending also gave me the promise of a sequel so I am happy. I will look out for this author and the subsequent book.

4 stars.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Imagine the scene: You’ve just started a mini getaway with your mum and two best friends at a luxury chalet in the French Alps, when your boyfriend turns up to surprise you. Jack is handsome, attentive and charming — everything you could possibly wish for in a man — but you’ve never seen him before in your life!

Or at least you can’t remember him, thanks to a head injury that’s erased all memory of the past six months. But the evidence is all there — on your phone and social media — of a hearts and flowers romance with dishy doctor Jack.

So why do you feel so uneasy? And what possible motive could he have for pretending to be someone he’s not?

Ooh, what a chiller thriller of a read this was! It had everything: a remote, snowed-in location, unreliable narrators, and a twisty, corkscrew of a plot that kept me guessing until the last page. And, of course, a body.

The memory-loss trope isn’t original, but it does lend itself rather brilliantly to this kind of thriller. And author Michelle Frances does a first-rate job of inserting you inside protagonist Amy’s head, as she vacillates between thinking she’s losing her mind and the absolute conviction that Jack is an imposter.

As flashbacks of memory add to the uncertainty so does a second narrative that you know is going to intersect at some point. I guessed how quite early on but couldn’t for the life of me make all the pieces fit.

The strands finally untangle, in what is a masterful display of prestidigitation by Frances. I’m a highly critical thriller reader, but every time I thought I spotted a hole, she stepped in and patched it up quick smart.

And the ending! Just as I thought everything was done and dusted — and, I won’t lie, I felt a tad underwhelmed — out came the sucker punch. Please tell me there’s going to be a sequel.

After The Girlfriend came The Boyfriend, well for me at least from Michelle Frances, and what a ride it was!

Enjoyed it thoroughly, despite figuring out by the half way mark what was going on. There were still a decent smattering of OMG moments to keep you hooked, and if you have a penchant for a psychological thrilling rollercoaster ride, this should be right up your street.

Yes of course the descriptive notes of Val d'Isere could have been expanded, but then it would have been a pointlessly drawn out novel; the descriptive was limited to Amy's experience, which really was the point, and you could really feel her frustration and despair and horror.

It took just a few nights of breathless reading to become engrossed, and the second half was compelling enough to burn through in one night, to the detriment of sleep!

Good work Ms Frances 😁

Soon-to-be-thirty Amy has a good job, her own flat, & good friends, but she doesn't have the one thing that would make her mother really happy for her - a boyfriend. When Amy falls on her way home from work one evening, she sustains a head injury & amnesia. This means that Amy cannot remember the previous six months of her life, but it seems that sometime in the past few months, she met someone - Dr Jack Stewart. There's texts between them & photos of their dates (none including his face though), & photos of the presents he has sent her, but Amy is afraid he has already dumped her when he fails to respond to her text messages about a skiing trip with her friends, Lisa & Jenna & their husbands, booked for her birthday. Once they reach the ski resort, Amy is puzzled by Jenna's strangely standoffish behaviour with her, but she is even more shocked when Jack appears saying he has managed to get the time off after all. It seems he does exist, & he is pretty much exactly what she was looking for. Is he too good to be true?

I was immediately hooked by the synopsis so requested the ARC of this book, & the cover is lovely with crisp cold tones of blue & white. Unfortunately the book itself is average. There was nothing actually wrong with it as such, it was just too predictable - there are no hidden twists or surprise reveals. The reader knows exactly what is happening & who is orchestrating it from early on & I prefer to be kept guessing for as long as possible. I do have one of the author's other titles on my bookshelf & I'm intrigued enough to give it a whirl in due course.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Pan Macmillan, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily.
This book is generally well-written with just a few spelling mistakes but in an effort to make the plot twists work there were a few important points which are unrealistic: Spoiler alert!
Lisa, a doctor, does not block giving Amy sleeping tablets (even during the day) without her knowledge or consent; this is medically and ethically wrong and would not be condoned by any doctor
Jenna, supposedly a close friend, distances herself from, and is angry with Amy even though Lewis has cheated previously
A ward nurse gives details of Amy's recovery progress to 'Jack' without any proof he knows her
Martha's inappropriate drinking is commented on several times but no-one ever addressed it
Harry has spent time in prison previously so fingerprints etc would be on file. Banks and police agencies have many ways of tracking financial fraud and with bank account details lodged with a solicitor as a starting point it is unbelievable that the money would not have been traced within 6 months.

In addition most of the women are portrayed as gullible, with Amy, the 29-year-old single main character seemingly unable to make a life for herself without a man / boyfriend.
I persevered to the end but honestly wished I hadn't, the clever final twist I hoped for never happened.

A bad accident in February leaves Amy with a head injury that causes amnesia - she has no memories of her life from the previous August onwards. Her GP friend Lisa tells her she has a boyfriend, Dr Jack Stewart, a consultant paediatrician, but she cannot remember him. After her release from the hospital, she travels to Val d’Isère to celebrate her 30th birthday, leaving London from St Pancras station and staying in a mountain lodge owned by her Aunt Esme. Her friends Jenna, Lisa and her mum Martha are with her when Jack, who has been ghosting her, turns up on the doorstep. David and Lewis, the husbands of Lisa and Jenna, are also expected to arrive.

This is a really enjoyable psychological thriller. It’s well-plotted, fast-paced and engrossing. The setting in Val d’Isère is vividly described and the February weather conditions give atmosphere and chills to the unfolding drama. There are excellent, though awkward dynamics between the characters, layering the interest. Amy’s post head injury amnesia and resulting paranoia are central to the tale whilst the reader ponders what could be true. Her building dread is conveyed well, there are some good plot twists and the ending is unpredictable. 100% recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Pan Macmillan via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
