“He’d never had to deal with any real crime for most of his time as chief…until I came back to Martha’s Vineyard.”

Homicide detective Abby Pearce returned to her home of Martha’s Vineyard after the death of her partner and a divorce. She has her drinking under control (for now) and has settled in to small town policing. It’s summer tourist season, the island hotels are full and Abby is dealing with a rash of stolen street signs. Then a call comes in from the luxury Beach Hotel. Five people have been slaughtered: Thomas Lavelle, a prominent New York cardiologist, his wife, two young daughters and baby son. The only survivor is the Lavelle’s fifteen year old daughter Karin and she is near catatonic with shock. The horror continues when Karin’s grieving grandparents walk into her hospital room and demand to see Karin. This girl is a stranger.

The small Martha’s Vineyard police force faces almost constant pressure from the local, state and national press to solve the murders quickly and find the missing girl. All clues seem to end in dead alleys until Abby has an idea that will break the case. Will she be in time to save Karin…and herself?

This is the second in the Abby Pearce series although it reads like a standalone thriller. This series just keeps getting better! The location is atmospheric and gives every case a locked room (or island) plot. The characters, especially Teena and Lincoln (we now know everything about you, Mr. Connor), are well developed and add to the story. But the real star here is Abby. She’s trying to overcome her alcoholism, develop her career and find love. I can’t wait to see what she does next! 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Dana Perry for this ARC.
