This is the third book in a series. This book is very gritty. It’s a complete page turner. It’s packed full of twists and turns. An action packed book

This Edinburgh police procedural is the third book in the series, and I am sure I would have connected more with the characters had I read the other two books first, as there were many references to previous events.
1971. DS Helen Carter has her hands full with the return of a cop killer/career criminal, a young man shot and left for dead, and her mom's upcoming nuptials. The sentences are short. There is little description. It's kind of like reading Cliff's notes. Every one of the characters is suffering.
I received this book at no charge from NetGalley and the author, but all opinions are my own.

Set in the 70s when women were a minority in the force. Our detective is thorough and determined. A good story and interesting characters.

The Suspects by Jodie Lawrance

The Suspects by Jodie Lawrance is the third in the Detective Helen Carter series. The story is set in Edinburgh and the time is the 1970’s, with the attitude to women working in previously male environments.
An old case and a serious gunshot wound to be resolved.
Recommended.

Firstly, I didn't realise this was the third book of a series of three to date. I don't know if there will be more. But you can read this as a stand a lone novel if you wish. The book's story is self contained. However, I got the feeling the characters have been around throughout the series. So, just on the characters a lone I would advise to read the first two.

The story is set in the late 1970's and it's main character is a scottish female detective. It's about a female detective working hard to live in a world dominated by men. She does so pretty well.

I found the book slow to start. But it soon picked up pace and you can really get in to it.

I think what I liked the most was the fact that she followed police procedures. It allows you to try to work out what's happening and who is guilty without sensationalism or gory murders.

This is a real good old fashioned detective story and that is not meant detramentaly.

Enjoy

Dark detective thriller set in the 1970s and Edinburgh feels very real for that time. DS Carter continues to have a hard time from her misogynist colleagues but she is being more accepted by them as time passes. This time she has the murder of a young lad which may or may not be tied with a suspected major nasty piece of work/criminal who is currently living in Spain. his return sparks activity shall we say. Well-written police procedural and so nice to see real paper based work for a change from frenetic emails/mobile phones instant gratification/violence. Well worth a read and the story stands alone although Helen's background is better explored through the earlier books. Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have read the first in this historical crime series, The Uniform, set in 1970s Edinburgh featuring now acting DS Helen Carter, but missed the second, and this is third which sees Carter working in a world and police force that reflects the social norms and attitudes towards women at this time, the sexism and misogyny, and in CID, there are those that are resentful of her. She works under her boss, DI Jack Craven and there is a new DCI Murphy in charge overall. It is dank and cold winter, and life is about to become even more difficult for Helen, Infamous cop killer, Jimmy Osbourne, who carried out a heist 8 years ago and fled to Spain, has returned, but they have no evidence. With a shooting and a series of crimes which it looks likes Osbourne might be behind, Carter works with a fellow colleague who lost a partner, aiming to arrest Osbourne, but it is not going to be easy. This was an okay read, but didn't capture my interest as much as the first book.

I recently read the first book in this series which is set in 1970s Edinburgh. Helen Carter is a police detective who has to work in difficult conditions due to the inherent misogyny within the police force at the time.
In this episode she is investigating the shooting of a teenager as well as trying to catch out a nasty criminal who has returned to Scotland after hiding out in Spain. A new colleague, Loughton, has more reason than most to want to see him behind bars as he believes that his former police partner was killed by him in an attempted robbery. These two strands of the plot gradually come together as the story progresses.
The boss, DI Craven’s private life is explored a little more in this book- he has difficulties with ex wife who has a drink problem despite looking after their young twins. McKinley, Helen’s colleague also has some issues and Helen tries to help as much as she can.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series but for some reason this one was not quite as compelling. This might be because I’ve missed book 2 and some of the background information on the characters was lacking.
I consequently found some of the characters rather two dimensional and even Loughton, the new police colleague engendered very little sympathy despite his quest for justice.
The setting of Edinburgh in the Winter was cold and bleak, which made the whole story rather depressing. With the first book I couldn’t wait to pick it up but I felt this one lacked that sort of impetus and I didn’t rush to read it quickly although I did finish it in good time. Having said that I will definitely keep my eye out for the next in the series and hope it has regained some of the excitement of the first book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Sergeant Helen Carter is a formidable character fighting to survive in a male dominated career the 1970s police force. I love the strength, determination and resilience that Helen shows despite the stereotypes and prejudices that she faces.

Jodie's writing of the seventies is very authentic to the times and her ability to write in the investigative style is so engaging almost as if your experiencing the case with her.

A new scottish thriller set in Edinburgh. Introducing Helen Carter, the time period of the 70's is spot on. It starts off at a rapid pace & doesn't let up. A real page turner, a debut novel which is crying out for the next installment, can't wait!!!

I’ve enjoyed the Scotland mysteries I’ve read so I thought I would try a new series and I did like the first one. I just finished The Suspects by Jodie Lawrance. I enjoyed this book and thank Netgalley and Joffe books for the chance to read it before publication.

Detective Sergeant Helen Carter is the central character in this series. Like the earlier books in this series it is set in Edinburgh in the 1970s when it was unusual to see a woman in her role. Work is often difficult for her in this male dominated environment but in this third book in the series she is more accepted on her own merits.

The main story focuses on the return a major criminal and suspected cop-killer to Edinburgh, probably to collect some of the loot from a 1971 robbery. Of course there are a number of other crimes occurring shortly after his return which may or may not be related to his return. Like the other in this series I have read. this is a good detective story that is engaging and well written,

I believe each book can stand on its own but would suggest reading the first in the series before reading this one. It is not at all that following the mysteries in this book is dependent on prior books but reading the first will give you useful background on DS Helen Carter.

This is the 3rd book in this police procedural/mystery series that is set in Edinburgh in the 1970s. Helen Carter is a police detective on the tail of a notorious criminal & suspected cop-killer named Jimmy Osborne. Jimmy always seems to be one step ahead of the officers and it’s time to bring him down. Although, this book had some action, it also had some drama as we got to know the members of the CID. I enjoyed Helen’s character as she tries to navigate through what life has thrown at her. I can easily picture this as a television series and look forward to future books with these characters.

Set in the late 1970s, this is book three in the series, following on from The Uniform and The Evidence. Helen Carter is still Acting Detective Sergeant in the CID in Edinburgh, working with DI Jack Craven, DC Terry McKinley and DCs Randall and Bell under their new and abrasive DCI Murphy. The perpetrator in their last gruelling case has now been sent to prison for life and they are hoping for a quieter time. Unfortunately this isn’t going to be the case since it looks like Jimmy Osbourne is back in Edinburgh from Spain, presumably to retrieve the spoils from the armed robbery in 1971 that he managed to evade conviction for. The factory raid also tragically left PC Leonard Matthews shot dead and PC Ian Loughton badly injured. Loughton has been tracking him ever since, and with the news that Osbourne has been spotted at a jewellers which was later robbed, is instructed to work with Helen to capture him. Is Osbourne up to his old tricks again? Picking him up is one thing – proving him guilty, especially of killing a cop, will be a whole different game but Loughton is determined to bring him down this time. Whilst trailing Osbourne, the detectives also have to deal with the shooting of a young man, and with a mole in the station leaking information to a newspaper, someone is heading for big trouble when they get caught.
Police investigations moved a lot more slowly in the 1970s and the pace of the story accurately reflects this. No computer databases, no DNA and limited forensics meant that far more reliance had to be placed on solid detective work, witnesses and painstaking checking of evidence. As a female detective in a very male dominated environment, life is not always easy for Helen but she is gradually being accepted on her own merits, and if anything, I think she is better treated in this story than we hear about from those times. I love the feel of the 1970s that the author creates in this story, a little nostalgic trip back to the time of Boney M and Opal Fruits. A little thread is left dangling right at the end, making me wonder what will come for these detectives in the next story. 4.5*

The Suspects is the third book in the Detective Helen Carter series. Even though I did not read the first two, I did not feel I missed anything. The Suspects is a solid police procedural with good character development and a solid story that held my interest. I will check out the other books by Jodie Lawrance.
