A well written psychological thriller!

It took a while to get my attention but the pacing and action picked up after a while and kept me hooked till the end. It had quite a few twists and I was confused about the bad guy was till the end. Both the cover and the title are eye catching and fit in with the story quite well.

What bugged me was Chloe Davis, the protagonist, who could be hard to relate to at times mostly due to her tendency to make some questionable decisions despite her knowing better. There are also some plot holes that are bugging me so I'm docking half a star and rounding down the rating for that.

Overall, an engaging debut!

3.5/5

when I wake up at 4 in the morning i won't to carry on reading the book so that is how i I know this is a good book lol. This kept me interested till the last page. Some parts are a bit slow, it's not a constant over the top roller coaster but I kind of like that!!! It does really get into your head and you'll find yourself as bad as I was, using every spare min to try and read a bit more. The main character was quite likeable and although the overall premise was predictable, the writer did make it her own woth the direction she takes it in so overall, I'd def recommend

3.5 rounded down.

Monsters lurk under the bed, behind closed doors, they hide in deep dark woods but sometimes they’re right there in front of you in plain sight. Twenty years ago twelve year old Chloe Davis’s world imploded when her father is arrested and convicted for the murder of six teenage girls from her home town of Beaux Bridge, Louisiana. In the present day, Chloe, now a psychologist, is preparing to marry Daniel, maybe finally her tentative hold on life can be tethered in a loving relationship. However, when a local girl goes missing it reawakens all her fears and insecurity- will her world come crashing down as her past and present collide?

There are parts of this book that I really like and for a debut it’s quite impressive but I do find it a mixed bag read. The character of Chloe is portrayed extremely well, you feel what she feels and it’s clear she’s an unreliable narrator which is something I enjoy. It strongly conveys the impact of her childhood trauma in a powerful way as it’s like she and her family have a life sentence too. The Louisiana location and setting of the novel adds an atmosphere which the author uses to real effect.

However, it’s an uneven read. In places it’s slow and there’s repetition then it speeds up and there’ll be tension and suspense, then it slows again so it becomes like a light that keeps flickering on and off. The other problem is that I knew most of the outcome before we’d even get very far into the book though there is one aspect I don’t foresee though you do require suspension of disbelief and I find it hard to buy into it. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep repeating déjà vu which drives me mad if I’m honest (yes, message received!) and also repeatedly using flicker in different ways.

Overall, it’s clear the author has talent and I’m sure there’s a bright future ahead. I can absolutely see it making an excellent television mini series too.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins, Harper Fiction for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

This was a disappointingly slow book. I struggled to keep reading it and found chunks of it were predictable. The plot sounded interesting but unfortunately it was not delivered well.

Chloe Davis's dad is a serial killer jailed for the murder of a number of girls and now on the anniversary of her father's crimes a girl she knows goes missing is there a copycat on the loose and is her past coing back to haunt her?
At times I found the story a bit slow for me but I stuck with it and found it just OK from me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for the ARC

A slow start, but then it takes a turns & gets twisty! Twenty years ago Chloe Davis’ father was arrested for the murders of six missing girls in Breaux Bridge, LA. Now Chloe is a psychologist and planning her wedding. She appears happy, but deep down she’s losing control. She usually mixes Xanax with wine and wakes up hazy. Two girls have gone missing, is there a copycat serial killer?! This is an entertaining book to read, though a bit predictable. Thank you to NetGalley and publishers for a gifted copy! This is my honest review.

A truly excellent psychological thriller with a genuinely engaging main protagonist and a plot that is as twisty as a bag full of pretzels.

A serial killer caught, a possible copycat on the loose, dark family secrets and an edgy unpredictable feel to the prose makes A Flicker In The Dark hugely addictive.

The children of serial killers is a popular theme at the moment it seems and this one is a cut above because it is really involving, doesn't rely on plot devices and has excellent writing with depth and context.

I really liked it. Recommended.

You're in for a mega treat.
Chloe Davis’ father is a serial killer.
He was convicted and jailed when she was twelve but the bodies of the girls were never found, seemingly lost in the surrounding Louisiana swamps. The case became notorious and Chloe’s family was destroyed. His crimes stalk her like a shadow. Now Chloe has rebuilt her life. She’s a respected psychologist in Baton Rouge and has a loving fiancé.
But she just can’t shake a tick-tick-tick of paranoia that, at any moment, it might all come crashing down. As does something darker. It is the anniversary of her father’s crimes, and Chloe is about to see her worst fears come true –
a girl she knows goes missing.
I'm a fan of Karin Slaughter and now I'm a fan of Stacy Willingham too. Now I see why it's movie rights has been sold already. Because it's really really brilliant and I think everyone must read it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Harper Fiction for giving me an advance copy.

Chloe Davis has built a new life for herself. At age 12, her father was arrested and convicted of a number of murders. Sadly for the families of the victims, he never disclosed the location of their bodies and they lay somewhere, unforgotten in the wilds of Louisiana. Chloe is now a successful psychologist with a fiancee and a bright future ahead of her. But then, on the anniversary of her father’s heinous crimes, a girl Chloe knows disappears. Is there a copycat at work? And will Chloe’s past destroy the life she has built for herself? Dark and suspenseful

I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review

I loved this one. Very fast paced, had me turning pages as I tore through it – I had to see how it would end. The characters were well rounded and the narrative felt believable. Gave me chills.
