This is a story of a manipulative mother and how far she will go to control her daughter. The main character is extremely insecure, almost to the stage of being unbelievable. I liked the stories and the twists which kept it a page turner. Some of the thoughts were long winded and I found I wanted to skim through those parts as it didn’t add to the story. Overall it was a good book and a quick read. Thank you to Boldwood books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I forgot to write a review on this one.

First of all, this title had me hooked for so long, each chapter has that premise in it, you have the feeling that you know who is the killer, but still you are not sure! The writing was good, the plot twist was a bit expected, and somehow not at the same time. I just had the feeling that the plot was going too slow for too long and then came the plot twist, but not with as much bang as it should. Nevertheless, it is still a very good book, and I would recommend it to people because of all other parts.

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC.

Jess and her mother are being interviewed after Adam, Jess’s boyfriend's car, has been found over a cliff and no sign of Adam. Jess had met Adam, a plumber, when she called him out for a repair. Jess’s mother Abigail is controlling and domineering to the point of coercive control, telling Jess all her life things such as “ what you want doesn’t matter” and blaming her for her father leaving many years ago. Jess isn't allowed to mention her father “ as then others will want to know what happened and what you did”. Jess was close to her father and only knows that the marriage was unhappy- something she blames herself for despite her being a child at the time. Alternate chapters are “now” and “ then” when Jess and Adam met and how their relationship was affected by Abigail.
Yes this type of person really does exist and whilst this is fiction, controlling narcissistic personalities like this can control their offspring whilst the children (of whatever age) have little idea of what is happening as it is all they have ever known and to them this is normal. They see the person as “protecting” them and caring for them by doing this, when in reality the person only cares about themselves and no-one is going to take their narcissistic supply away from them. (see narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder) The child seeks approval from the parent desperately wanting to please them but never, ever getting it . “Practice makes perfect” was used by Abigail and Jess was never ever good enough to achieve any praise. Early on Jess acknowledges that perfect doesn't really exist but has to lie to try to appease her mother.
I thought I could see where this was going but was slightly off the mark- however for me the most important thing is that a personality like this is now out there for all to see to raise awareness that abuse of this type really does happen and little can be done legally unless there are other types of abuse involved.
“ I had been trying to achieve something that was impossible. I'd measured myself worth by how happy I made someone else. I'd made myself feel guilty and inadequate because no matter what I did I always failed”
Wow! To me this is either very well researched or perhaps maybe even from someone's experience. I can't say how emotive and powerful seeing this is. A stunning piece of writing with a message, 5*

Admittedly, I thought I had wrapped up this whole book at 20 percent in. Little did I know that the last chapter, the last page,
would still have me guessing! Without spoiling - I had some major doubts about the main characters from the get-go, but the premise kept me going til the “bitter” end! Thank you for the advance copy! Can’t wait to read more from this Author!

A mother/ daughter domestic noir....... this book isnt reinventing the wheel or anything but it does put its own spin on the dark dynamics that can go in a minther daughter relationship and its got a really good pace so keeps you engaged. A really good, easy read which won't tax your brain too much but will still have you wondering until the end

This book was so amazing! I found myself eagerly turning from page to page. In addition, I could relate to the mother/daughter relationship. This is a must read!

For fans of Lisa Jewell and her very twisted takes on mother/daughter relationships, this psychological thriller will be a quick and mostly satisfying read. I didn't find the writing or characterization to be compelling but it moved quickly enough and had enough momentum to keep me interested until the end.

This story literally had me on tenterhooks! The problematic and far too judgemental relationship between mother and daughter becomes even more twisted upon the suspicious disappearance of the daughter’s boyfriend.

I have read a few thrillers but this is the first one that centers on the manipulative hold a mother has on her daughter. Immediately I felt sorry for Jess. Her needy mother, failed romantic relationships and lack of friends made her feel isolated and led her to believe that there was something wrong with her.

I would like to applaud Karen. Hooray for good friends!

This was easy to read and engaging. Although I would think that some things were a little too obvious for the seasoned thriller reader.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.

Although a quick page turner, this book was predictable from page 2. Thanks NetGalley for advance copy.

Difficult to finish, mainly as I found it dull. Such a shame. I read the description of this book with excitement and began reading the moment my request was approved. I find mother/daughter dynamics such a great read in thrillers. Sadly, the book is written too simply for me, there was no insight, no depth to characters, no showing and all telling. So sorry.

The Perfect Daughter by Alex Stone.

Jess is largely controlled by her mother , it's a strange relationship as she seems ok with her mother having a say in from what she wears to who she sees .
One day she meets Adam and they begin to date , despite her mother's obvious dislike of him.
Adam goes missing and as time passes is presumed dead , although the police turn to Jess for answers.
A chilling story , lots of twists and surprises along The way .
A great read.

I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review

I loved this one. Very fast paced, had me turning pages as I tore through it – I had to see how it would end. The characters were well rounded and the narrative felt believable. Gave me chills. Solid five

A fairly decent psychological thriller about Jess and her deeply controlling mother and their intense relationship. I found the narrative dark and uncomfortable at times as it built up a picture of the mother and her coercive and controlling ways and it was very thought provoking especially regarding our own perceptions of truth and how much they can be swayed and altered. It was also a good dissection of human relationships, both friendships and romantic ones and the reasons they can fail and the influences of this.
I was mildly disappointed that I guessed how the story would pan out and with the twist at the end, not really sure why as I do think it was well written and presented and I was engaged with the story throughout. Definitely worth a read, thank you.

This book took me on quite the rollercoaster ride! The story itself had me invested in wanting to know more from the first page. As I kept reading, the conversations between characters and the way they’re portrayed to us, had me nervous, angry, feeling sad for, as well as hating the main characters at different times as the story built! The main character, Jess, had me all over the map from at first relating to her, then feeling sorry for her, and at times I even grew to dislike her. All I can say is that the stories between Jess, her mom, and Adam are all interesting to read as they play out and I was actually pretty surprised with how it ended! Definitely one I’d read again and recommend.
