In this book the author gives an insight into her perspective of motherhood. I really enjoy books like this that paint the picture of motherhood and just that it’s not always perfect. This authors book was really funny and also painted the picture that motherhood isn’t always what you expect it to be - books like this really make me realise that I’m not alone in this journey.

A great book that I would read again.

I was really excited to read this as I enjoy Lucy's comedic style. This book was full of relatable and bizarre moments of parenthood.

I struggled to read the first part (although maybe that was because I was reading it a chapter at a time just before bed). I read 70% of the book in an hour and a half, while trying to laugh silently so as not to wake my sleeping baby on my shoulder.

Parts of the book are bizarre (baby bird...) but it's very real and relatable (not being transported in an egg box, I think that might just be Lucy).

I was sent this book from Netgalley in return for an honest opinion so here it is.

Yorkshire-born comedian and star of Meet The Richardsons alongside her husband Jon, Lucy Beaumont, has written this rather funny memoir about the trials and tribulations of juggling motherhood and a career. I could also hear Lucy's thick Hull accent throughout whilst reading it and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It is a while since I actually did read this excellent book but I've only just got round to reviewing it as I was busy at the time I did read it and totally forgot about it.

It's five stars from me. Would recommend to fans of comedy and witty humour.

I was so disappointed to DNF this book. I enjoy Lucy Beaumont as a comedian, but this book just didn't do anything for me.

It explores her experience and stories of pregnancy and motherhood, but the stories manage to be kind of dull and predictable, and simultaneously not that relatable as a fellow new-mum (which was why I was looking forward to picking this up).

I was just getting too bored to keep reading.

Thank you to Octopus Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.

Sweet and endearing. Have enjoyed Lucy's stand-up for years, and her new show with her husband is a riot. This was a nice companion to that, with Lucy's trademark oddness and good cheer.

You don’t have to be a parent to love this book. I am not and I had a whale of a time. Some heart warming stories that I am sure are so much better if you are a parent but nonetheless a great read

A real frank, honest story of raising a daughter. Funny and heartwarming. The footnotes by Jon Richardson add to the hilarity. Really enjoyable and definitely struck a cord with my own experiences. Recommended read.
Thank you Netgalley

The title of this book is brilliant and grabbed my attention. When I saw Lucy Beaumont was the author I couldn’t wait to start reading. I’m a huge fan of ‘Meet the Richardsons’ and Lucy’s humour.

Drinking Custard is a great read for parents, with relatable and hilarious content mainly about the rollercoaster journey of raising a child.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for my advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 📚

Very funny book about the trials and tribulations of motherhood.
Really enjoyed this one. Everyone can relate to Lucy’s tales if your a mom or not.

From TV's award-winning comedy mum and the writer of Hullraisers, Lucy Beaumont, comes her hilarious debut on the trials and tribulations of motherhood.

Known for her sharp, witty and surreal view on everyday life, Lucy shares the unpredictable craziness of being a mum in this brilliant and laugh-out-loud 'mumoir'. Mums everywhere will recognise the madness of it all. Like when Lucy was hospitalised during her third trimester with chest pains but it turned out to be a burrito. Or when she was so tired at the park she forgot her own child's name.

Heart-warming and laugh-out-loud funny, Drinking Custard also captures Lucy's marriage to comedian Jon Richardson, as they navigate Lucy's raging pregnancy hormones and balk at pram prices together.

Get ready to make room on mum's bookshelf for Drinking Custard to sit alongside other mum classics such as Why Mummy Drinks, Hurrah For Gin! and The Unmumsy Mum.

Lucy and Jon’s love story is so cute and I really enjoy hearing about a Hull girl done good. This could be read by people just wanting to read about the ups and downs of meeting and marriage, but probably best for fans of the couple!

Such a fun, easy read. I loved the light tone of this book and the humour was right up my street. Perfect summer reading

Very quick and amusing read by comedian Lucy Beaumont (with introduction and interjections by her husband, and fellow comedian, Jon Richardson) covering the period of her pregnancy and the first five years of motherhood.
Lucy’s style of writing is open and honest and it makes you feel as though she is chatting with you, opening up to you and sharing secrets like a friend. It is certainly not a parenting manual, but as well as being amusing, it might make first time parents feel better if they’re feeling that they are not good enough as they realise that others out there are not perfect too!

I love Lucy Beaumont as a comedian and I also love parenting podcasts/books etc even though I don't have children yet. But something with the way this was written/structured just didn't keep my attention and after reading about 45% I've decided that it just isn't the book for me.

Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. This was an easy, engaging read. Beaumont has a friendly, warm, funny writing style and I enjoyed reading her recount of motherhood and her lovely relationship with her daughter, along with the asides from her husband.

Quite humorous in places but sadly not quite as funny as I hoped. I think maybe not being a parent myself I couldn’t relate to it, so think others may find it funnier. Still worth a read however.

This was so much fun to read, snigger, snorts & laugh out loud moments from start to finish.

This is the parenting manual that every new mum should be handed on leaving the hospital with their little angelic cherub.

Her comedian husband John's footnotes added to the hilarity of the stories being told.

A brutally honest, no frills guide to first time parenthood.

A fun book chronicling the ups and downs of motherhood. You can really hear the voice of Lucy Beaumont, almost to the point of reading it in her accent!
I enjoyed it but there are a lot of very similar funny mum/motherhood books around and I do feel that market is now saturated, which does make this less impactful. A nice read if you haven’t read others like it before though!

"Not to be deterred, I tried her on blitzed kale - a mental thing to do but I had read that some babies love it and it sort of gets their taste buds ready for, well, living with Gwyneth Paltrow, I suppose."

- Drinking Custard: Confessions of a Confused Mum by Lucy Beaumont

Reading this book, I think Lucy Beaumont is the mum I would love to have bumped into at mum and baby groups. She talks candidly here about the ups and downs of being a new mum, not least the pressures we often pile upon ourselves.

The writing style is chatty and reassuring, without any inkling that her way was the right way. It was just the way it was. I found the familiarity of her experiences comforting and her honesty refreshing.

There are sporadic interjections from husband, Jon Richardson, reminiscent of their successful telly programme, Meet the Richardsons. It's a funny book, but there's real heart too; the importance of extended family and childhood experiences are a recurring theme, as well as Lucy's nostalgic ties to her homeland of Hull.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes memoir-style books, light-hearted reads about parenting young children, and anyone who is a fan of Meet the Richardsons.

This book was initially released on 30th September, 2021, and the paperback edition is due for release on 12th May, 2022.

Thank you too @netgalley and @octopus_books_ for this ARC.
