"Find Me in the Dark" by Dea Poirier is a chilling thriller that delves into the depths of human psyche and the shadows of the past. The novel introduces us to Detective Harlow Durant, a character whose complexity is matched only by the twisted case she finds herself embroiled in.

Set against the backdrop of a frigid New York winter, the story unfolds with the discovery of a young woman's body, preserved in the snow. As Durant works to piece together the victim's story, we are taken on a journey through a small town's darkest corners and the hidden lives of its residents. Poirier masterfully weaves a narrative that is as much about the detective's own struggle with her identity as it is about the crime itself.

The author's writing is sharp and evocative, capturing the starkness of the landscape and the urgency of the hunt for a killer. The pacing is relentless, driving the reader forward through twists and turns that are both surprising and satisfying. Poirier's portrayal of Harlow Durant is particularly compelling, as she is a protagonist haunted by her lineage, fighting to establish her place in a male-dominated field while grappling with the fear that she may be more like her father—a convicted serial killer—than she'd like to admit.

"Find Me in the Dark" is a story of secrets and lies, of the masks people wear and the truths they bury. It's a tale that reminds us that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are the ones hiding in plain sight. Poirier has crafted a novel that is not only a gripping crime thriller but also a poignant exploration of the human condition. It's a must-read for fans of the genre and a standout debut for the Detective Harlow Durant series.

"Find Me in the Dark" by Dea Poirier is an exceptional thriller that gripped me from the first page and refused to let go. Poirier has crafted a masterful tale with a plot that ensnares with its cleverness and a narrative drive that commands attention. The protagonist's journey is not just compelling but also emotionally resonant, offering layers upon layers of psychological depth.

Poirier's prose is nothing short of exquisite, striking the perfect balance between eloquent description and the stark, gripping reality of the narrative's darker moments. The dialogue is razor-sharp, cutting to the heart of each character's motivations and driving the story with a momentum that makes the book impossible to put down.

The thematic exploration of darkness within "Find Me in the Dark" is handled with an elegance and sensitivity that is rare and captivating. This isn't just a journey through the shadows of a mystery; it's a deep dive into the essence of human endurance and the complexities of our inner demons.

In the realm of crime and thriller novels, "Find Me in the Dark" shines incredibly brightly. Poirier's work is both a thrill-ride and a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, making it a must-read for anyone who seeks a story that is as intellectually satisfying as it is emotionally thrilling. For aficionados and newcomers to the thriller genre alike, this book is a standout—a tour de force that leaves a lasting impression and sets a high bar for contemporary suspense.

Synopsis:

Detective Harlow Durant is sick and tired of running from her past. But since she is the daughter of a serial killer, what choice does she have than transfer to another precinct as soon as her secret is out? Now, she is the only female detective in the New York Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation - with several men giving her a hard time as it is. With her partner Lucas, Harlow investigates the murder of young women found hidden in snowbanks. When the third girl is found, they know there's a serial killer out there. And Harlow is determined to catch the guy - because no one should suffer like her father's victims did.

My thoughts:

I loved the concept of the daughter of a serial killer investigating cases similar to his. The book was gripping, suspenseful, and I really enjoyed listening to it. It might have helped that I enjoyed Dea Poirier's style of writing as well as the narrator's voice and style of telling the story. I loved how the book talks abut women in mostly male-dominated jobs, even if it was a bit too much sometimes. Also, a thing that was bugging me (but might likely be a me-problem) was the subtle fatphobia displayed in diet talk, like having people comment on someone drinking a sugary drink when they have "sworn off of sugar". This was a great, fun audiobook I thoroughly enjoyed - and what stands out the most for me is the ending. On the one hand, the solution of the case, and that the victims are more important than the perpetrator. And also the final chapter left me breathless. So whatever case Durant is assigned to next - I NEED to read/listen to it!

This was my first book by Dea Poirier

I thought the narrator did a great job but i also didn’t feel much emotion from her.
I love police procedural books but i felt like something was missing from this one or not completely accurate. I just wanted a little more but I’m not sure what exactly.

I did like the relationship between the two partners and the mystery but the reveal was a little lackluster and i wanted more about the father and what he did.

I was so excited to listen to this audiobook release. Such an interesting premise of being and FBI agent who is the daughter of a convicted serial killer. For every reader who loves this genre it’s like a dream to encounter this type of book.
I really enjoyed the inner struggle of the main character, Harlow. It seemed very authentic for her to tussle with proving herself and not being associated with her fathers past. Lots of psychological drama and chaos keep you on your toes wondering what will happen next. You can see lots of different ways this type of story could play out and I’m so happy that I didn’t find it predictable or formulaic.

Special thanks to the following for the opportunity to listen to an early copy of this audiobook:

I keep telling myself I'm going to stop reading detective crime thrillers but here I am requesting more advanced copies of them and torturing myself. Thankfully, I actually found myself really enjoying this one. Detective Harlow was a fascinating character full of complexity and depth due to her past with a serial killer for a father. I really liked this angle and its the reason I decided to read this. Although the investigation parts didn't thrill me as much as I wish they would have, I really enjoyed the parts that personally surrounded Harlow so I could see myself reading the 2nd in this series. She is a really great character to surround a series around and I think this series will do well. This was my first from Dea Poirier but I thought the writing was very well done. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced copy of the audiobook.

A great introduction to a new thrilling series. Harlow is a fun main character with an interesting past that we get a glimpses of throughout the novel. This leaves plenty of room for growth and development in future novels. The series killer investigation keeps readers coming back however the constant Reference to the violence, hatred, and sexism that women receive from ALL men was overwhelming. 95% Of the male characters are “women haters” and I found it to be so pointed and frequent that is distracted from the rest of the book. I hope there is less in book two or I’m not sure I would continue with the series.

3.5 stars for a great book with one glaring imperfection.

This audiobook hooked me right away and kept my interest until the end. Detective Harlow Durant is investigating the deaths of the college women that are found frozen in snowbanks in Plattsburgh, New York. As the mystery of who killed them mounts, the clues and evidence are minimal, making it harder to pinpoint who the killer is. It's obvious these women knew their killer, but who was it that murdered them?

Having to do battle to earn respect as the only female detective with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations only makes Harlow's job more difficult. The other male detectives do all they can to make things uncomfortable for her, including blatant sexual harassment. Trying to keep her true identity hidden is a challenge, as well. She knows she will have to move on again soon once everyone figures out that her father is a prolific serial killer.

I liked the procedural aspects in this book, including crime scene investigations, the medical examiner's findings, the interviews with witnesses/suspects, and visits to the victims' family members and friends. It gave a lot of insight into who the victims were, making you feel the incredible loss they felt at losing their loved one to such a senseless crime.

The suspense built as the book progressed, making me anxious to get to the end and find out who the killer was! I honestly had to listen to the ending twice, as a bomb is dropped at the end (not literally, figuratively). It's obvious that the end of this book leaves it open to continuation into the next one (I hope), and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The author, Dea Piorier, as well as the narrator, Lisa Rost-Welling were both new to me, and I thought the narrator was perfect for the role of Detective Harlow Durant. Thank you to Netgalley and Hatchette/Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book and give my honest review.

Find Me in the Dark is the first book in a new detective/ police procedural series. I listened to the audiobook version of the book and enjoyed it overall. It was fast paced and well written and I will read the next in the series to see how the character and story of the main protagonist Detective Harlow Durant progresses... the twist at the end of this book holds big promise. The smooth, easy to follow narration by Lisa Rost-Welling kept up with the pace of the book easily.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture Audio and the author Dea Poirier for the audio ARC of the book.

Find Me In The Dark follows the story of Detective Harlow Durant and her partner, trying to solve a series of murders in New York state. The book also gives us a number of flashbacks to her former life as the daughter of a serial killer. Telling the story in this way really helps to give the reader an insight into how Harlow thinks and it makes her much more likable as a character. Fabulous audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you NetGalley for an audio ARC of, Find Me in the Dark by Dea Poirier

Bureau of Criminal Investigation Detective Harlow Durant has recently arrived in Plattsburg to work her newest case, the body of a young college student was found buried in a snow bank and the local police department is not happy about it. Durant has moved a lot in her life never letting anyone get too close to her sorid past, no one would take a detective that is the daughter of a serial killer seriously. As she begins to work the case more bodies are discovered and she quickly realizes she is dealing with another serial killer. Lucas is her newest partner and also an outsider, his experience with searching for missing persons might be the key to solving these crimes if he doesnt get too close to her secret past.

I have always enjoyed a good detective story and this looks like it will be a very enjoyable series. Poirier's story is intriguing giving Durant an unusual backstory. The pacing of the novel is good and overall realistic, minus going back to work hours after waking from a coma. I look forward to more works from Poirier and new Durant investigations. I had the audio version narrated by Lisa Rost-Welling who was very easy to listen to and would recommend her and look forward to more of her performances.

Find Me In the Dark is a new series starting Detective Harlow Durant. Durant has a past that she wants no one to know about, her serial killer father, and so she moves from town to town and sticks to her "loner" label. She is sent to Plattsburg New York to help find a killer when a body is uncovered in a snow bank. As her and her new partner are investigating this death, another body is found. Durant has to race to find out who this killer is before the next snow storm in hopes of saving their next victim.

This book had my interest from the start as Harlow, the daughter of a serial killer, gets tossed into her own serial murder investigation. Harlow has to figure out who is the murderer in a string of victims found in snow banks in upper New York. Her new partner, Lucas, is new to the homicide force and Harlow is slow to trust.

The story is told from both the present, as well as snippets of Harlow's past. I throughly enjoyed listening to this story and can't wait to read the next one in this new series!

I'd like to say a huge thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this one and it was well written. The characters were good, the plot was good, the booked moved well.....it just didn't really have anything that stood out and made it wildly different than the other mysteries. I would definitely try more from this author, but probably only if it had a very unique angle or was set somewhere interesting.

Thank you NetGalley!
I'm not sure how to rate this book because I read it during a busy time and maybe that's why I had such a hard time with it??
First off, I can say that I listened via audio book and didn't care for the voice. It just didn't feel right for this character.
Secondly, the plot must not have grabbed me because I repeatedly fell asleep while listening. Again, it was a busy time so I was tired but this doesn't happen to me too often.
So unfortunately, I really don't remember anything about this book even though I just finished it.
I guess this one was not for me.

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for providing me with an ALC in exchange for an honest review.

Find Me in the Dark is a fantastic listen or read for both spooky season and as a Beach Read for the summer. It is fast paced, entertaining, spooky, suspenseful, and basically everything you want a mystery/thriller to be. It was not especially chilling, but was still a heavy topic and a book that was written and narrated in a wonderful way!
