I loved this book. It's an amazing achievement for a frst novel with plenty of great characters, plenty of action and set in a very interesting time in Eurpoean history. I really enjoyed the choppy writing style which keeps the reader on their toes. Some reviews mention too many characters and too much flitting about but it is a book in three parts. each covering ten years. Starting in the middle decade, then back to the first ten years and finishing with the last ten years. Not flitting at all but well structured. I am already looking forward to the sequel. With thanks to NetGalley. the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read and review and e-ARC of this title.

A breathtaking and sweeping tale that takes the reader back to the dangerous uncertainties prevalent throughout Europe during the Thirty Years' War. A tumultuous & colorful fictional tapestry of a violent century cleverly plotted and teeming with a glorious & unforgettable cast of characters. The first volume of a planned trilogy, this riveting and entertaining novel reminded me of "Tyll", a German novel by Daniel Kehlman and published in 2020, where we follow the many adventures and misadventures of a smart and resilient hero as he tries to cunningly and skillfully navigate the treacherous waters of a tempestuous Europe.

A captivating piece of historical fiction that deserves to be enjoyed without any moderation whatsoever!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Allen & Unwin for this terrific ARC.

I very much enjoyed the beginning of this novel - the descriptions of Holland and France felt very authentic and of the time. However as the story continued, partly because of the increase in characters and partly because it is told in sections that are not sequential there were too many characters to hold in my head. It might perhaps have been an easier read as a paperback rather than on a kindle.
The story is of Jag/Jack/Jacques who is orphaned at an early age when his parents are killed. At first he is surviving, washing up in Holland and moving to on to Germany but when he is 'found' by a friend of his father's and learns what happens to his family he sets off on a quest to find a killer.
Set across Europe and across the time frame of the Thirty Years war, the story is rich in historical details. I found the parts about the camp followers who provide food and services for the soldiers fascinating and the life Jag had in the house of a Jewish merchant in Holland was detailed.
The story is long, and I believe only the first of a series. I would definitely recommend a hard copy to settle down with.

Dense and complex historical fiction which gives up its secrets slowly, but definitely rewards a careful reader. It starts off as a revenge tale set against the back drop pf the thirty years war and build from there. Personally, I prefer my hisfic to be concerned with battles, day-to-day life and politics rather than romance, so this suited me. I imagine others might find it more ponderous because it does move at a stately pace!

The first of a trilogy I believe and it'll be a great one. The story is set during the Thirty Years War and I think it may help to have a small idea of what it was all about. The author has written a comprehensive summary of it and I suggest that any reader should really read this carefully. The story of our young hero Jack/Jag is good one but the cast of characters is immense. I found it confusing when sometimes the characters are called something different. I found it an intense read. I couldn't read it at night before going to sleep as it is far too complicated but stick with it and I think it will be worthwhile.

Set against the backdrop of The Thirty Years War, The Silver Wolf is book one in the series of Fiskardo's War.

We follow Jack Fiskardo as he grows from a boy to manhood whilst searching for answers to his father's death.

It is a tapestry of many varied and interesting characters and a great debut novel!

Bring on book Two!

Jack, a young boy, is found. No one knows where he has come from, but he seems to have a talent for controlling horses - and for getting into and out of trouble.

The story follows Jack (or Jag as he is sometimes known), as he tries to find the men who killed his parents. Everyone he meets feels that there is something special/unusual about him.

The book starts fairly slowly, but the pace picks up during Jack's journey. He encounters many people who shape him, ending up as a soldier.

This is a compelling read - quite a long book, but I was kept gripped by the story. It would be better read in hard copy than on kindle as there are a lot of characters to remember and it would be easier if you could refer back (something I find difficult on a kindle).

I was surprised at the end to find that it was the first in a series, but am keen to read the sequels!

I couldn’t get into this book at all. Too many names to remember who the connections to who were.
As I was reading on my kindle it wasn’t as easy to flick back to the beginning and see how the characters were connected.
It was not the kind of book I could just pick up after a few days as I’d need to remember who everyone was.
Definitely not a kindle book but maybe one to read as paperback.

This book is an historical novel based in early 17th century Europe.
Jack is born of a French father and English mother in rural France. An idyllic childhood apart from a father who is away a lot as a professional soldier.
The story starts with Jag (jack) at the age of 12 being handed over to a Jewish merchant by a kindly sea captain in Sweden.
Jag is quite a handful and finds himself outcast but being very resourceful survives by his wits.
The story follows him through his teenage years.
Without giving anything away I loved reading this book once I'd got past the beginning.
Action with a tiny bit of love thrown in.

This book had me jumping back and forth! For me, too many characters that I got lost as to who was who. which spoiled the reading experience. This novel was not for me and would be better suited to readers who enjoy a lot of characters in their reading material.

I give a 2 star rating, only because the book was not for me.

I WANT TO THANK THE AUTHOR AND NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.

Tried to read this book but didn't get too far.

Felt it had too many characters and the booked jumped around quite a bit, so kept having to go back and re-read, as I was lost with what was going on.

This might be a good fit with people who can cope with this many characters, like with Game of Thrones fans but it was too much for me.
