Beth is up to her neck as ever trying to sort out the kids and their various activities when she receives a call to say that her husband Drew is in the hospital and it’s quite serious much to her surprise. His sister Gemma isn't so shocked as Beth and so begins some secrets being revealed- things Beth had absolutely no idea about the whole time she has been with Drew. As time goes on Beth learns more and more about her husband and how fragile her own life now is and how dependent they were on him. Her eldest son Tristan is from her first marriage and her youngest has Downs and hence requires more attention and therapy. A life built on Drew’s salary is now precarious.
Gemma thinks about how rather selfish and naive Beth was. Yes she has four children to look after but has had a very privileged position in not working and also having help around the house. The fact that she knows nothing about finances and general things means she has left everything to Drew to sort out- something that is reflected by Gemma, Drew's sister who resents her sister in law for obvious reasons.
There is a message within this book- one that tells us how important it is to be happy and that all the money in the world can’t buy that. To want a good education and stimulation for all of us, yes is important, but to have some fun in life is equally so.
An enjoyable read with that all important message- one life - live it.
