having read behind her eyes and this one, there seems to always be a mystical element that feels a little unrealistic, and perhaps unbelievable. i enjoy her writing and the atmosphere and tension built so that you wanted to know more.
this wouldn't put me off reading her books but i would be put off it was too fantastical.
A twisty turny tale full of suspense and nailbiting moments, I was glued to the page from the outset.
An exciting thrill of a read. Really liked the concept, it kept me intrigued throughout and surprised me with the twist of a conclusion. I like the slice of supernatural within this author's stories which for me sets her books apart from the regular thriller. Look forward to more from this author.
This book is so different from others I have read. The start of the book was fairly slow and I struggled at times to get through it. However in the middle part of the book the pace and plot picked up and the book was much better in the second half. I did guess the twist but overall it was a good read
Sarah Pinborough is an absolute genius within this genre. The thrilling, twisty tempo combined with the hugely relatable sleep problem creates such pleasing discomfort. A highly addictive read that will keep you awake, recommend!
A fantastic book by a fantastic author. There us nothing negative I can say about this one. This has been a gem from beginning to end.
5 Star read - totally had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Great characters and plot. I left a review on twitter for this book and raved about it - highly recommended.
Ooh a fantastic thrilling read not to be read if you do suffer from insomnia though !!
Sarah Pinborough has excelled herself with this book it’s fast paced and constantly page turning as you follow the lives of one family in particular Emma the mum and eventually her sister Phoebe who have had a very traumatic past with their mum who was admitted to a psychiatric facility when they were really young and Emma has been with a lovely family who fostered her and brought her up. She is now a top divorce lawyer and happily married to Robert and has Chloe and Will she hasn’t seen Phoebe for years and then she suddenly turns up just before Emma’s 40th birthday the same age their mother went mad
Emma has been dreading turning 40 thinking she might also go mad and things really start to unravel with the less sleep she gets every night is same but when will it end ?
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
I had higher expectations!
Thank you HarperCollins UK and NetGalley.
I really enjoyed this book, although I found it a little slow. It is not the best of Sarah's books that is why I can only give it 3 stars.
Excellent read, always go to author. This book kept me gripped throughout, looking forward to more from this author
After the success of ‘behind her eyes’ I find myself really disappointed with this author’s other books. I do think it’s me as so many people rave about them but for me I gave up 25% the way through.
Emma isn't sleeping. She's paranoid. She's irrational. Is it her or is someone else to blame. You'll have to read the book to find out.
For me, the first quarter was engaging & one night, triggered my own insomnia. Then it started to be very uncomfortable to read, it made me itchy but by this point, the story was in my head and I had to finish. If you've read Insomnia, what did you think of the end?
As Emma approaches her 40th birthday she is finding it increasingly hard to sleep, thoughts are invading her mind of what happened to her mum on her 40th birthday, a horrifying encounter that changed hers and her sisters life and left her mum in a mental asylum.
This was a dark somewhat creepy book with a really good plot and such a good twist that I didn’t see coming.
I really enjoyed reading this thriller. The narration was well written. Still carrying the trauma of life we are on a mission. Great book.
I’ve read a few of Sarah Pinborough’s novels and enjoyed them all, so I was really looking forward to reading this one.
I was not disappointed! It was thrilling and I was with the main character throughout as she descended into madness (or did she?!) No spoilers here but suffice to say there were lots of twists and turns along the way, leading to an exciting ending. The epilogue was particularly good, especially as there was a nod to one of Sarah’s previous novels in there. I would highly recommend this book, particularly if you’ve enjoyed the author’s previous work.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the advance copy.
I have read Sarah Pinborough before so I know she writes great, tense plotlines but they are rarely the ‘usual’ twists in her novels.
I really enjoyed the psychological thriller tension that built with every hour that Emma cannot sleep. She is a successful woman with a happy family but now she is turning forty and the age that her own mother had a mental breakdown. Her biggest fear that runs through her head every night when she should be sleeping is that the same thing will happen to her. Her insomnia makes her question everything and everyone.
Overall the novel is darkly tense, something that Pinborough excels at, but definitely has some strange turns before the reader is told what is really happening to Emma. I will say that the ending felt a little muddled and it took me a minute to unravel the revelations that were far from what I expected.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
Emma lives with her husband, Robert and her two children. Emma is about to turn 40 and is full of apprehension. Not for the normal reasons why people dreading this milestone. When Emma, and her older sister, Phoebe were young and their mother turned 40, she had a mental breakdown and the girls were brought up in foster care. Emma is paranoid the madness is inherited. As her 40th birthday approaches, she wakes at the same time each night, suffers from insomnia and strange events are starting to happen.
Another brilliant psychological thriller from Sarah Pinborough, with a twist that takes this read to another level.
This was a great book, a return to form for the author who wrote the insane Behind her Eyes. For me, this was almost as good as that, enjoyable and possibly better plotted at times! I liked the pace of this book and I loved how everything connected together. The Red Herrings in this book were perfect!
