An emotional story of a mother and her three daughters as WWI impacts their lives. Christina was born in Italy and views herself as above her husband Gerald but she's got a secret. Her daughters Etta, Jesse, and Cecilia are very different but they each (sadly) face heartbreak. Don't despair, though, there's hope as well. This sweeps from Italy to the UK to Egypt and Gallipoli. The characters are good as is the storytelling. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read- and here's hoping Chinn will continue the story.

Love in a Time of War had so much going on within the story.
The story is about the First World War and takes you to England, Egypt and Italy. Many family secrets come out along the way.
Following the lives of the Fry Sisters (Cecelia, Etta and Jessie) and how the war changed them as they find romance and love during the war.
This is a very long book….be ready for a slow beginning that does speed up as it goes on.
If you want to read a story about a family and their journey to overcome adversity, you need to read Love in a Time of War.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions are solely my own.

The journey of three sisters during World War 1. From London to Italy and Egypt, this book details the complicated lives and loves of these three sisters. Secrets and forbidden love feature in their lives. A detailed and informative look into the suffering and sacrifices people had to make in the war. I can't wait to read the next part of their journey.

Girls in Love

Romance, Heartache and the ravages of war are contained within the pages of this book. It spans countries, and continents in its story of wartime Romance.

The story is set during the first world war. You will travel to England, Italy, Egypt and even Canada. It follows the Fry family of three girls Celia, Etta and Jesse. They each find love and romance during the war, some not so happy and all challenging.

Celia is in London...she is marching for women's rights. She loves a man in a German uniform..the enemy. Jesse enlists as an Army nurse and travels to Egypt. She meets a doctor and marries, but at a great cost. Etta elopes with her Italian lover to Capri, but although her baby bump is for real, her marriage is not.

Christina..the mother of all holds a secret close to her that she can never tell. Because of this she worries for the safety of her daughters out in the world at war.

I love this book it was a long one, but it described everything in detail. I felt like I was walking on the cliffs in Italy and I felt the dirt sting my face in Egypt.

The book was well written, the Characters were wonderful and the depiction of the first world war and the trenches was realistic as were the zeppelins. There has been a lot written on WWII recently, but WWI is not so widely written about.

I hope there is a book two so I can follow the girls on the next section of their lives, especially Celia and Frank in Canada and Jesse and Aziz in Egypt. I also like the ending and hope that Christina once again finds happiness with Henry.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it.

Thanks to Adrienne Chinn for writing a great story, to Harper Collins U.K., One More Chapter for publishing it and to NetGalley for making it available to me.

Well written piece of historical fiction set in 1913 during world war 1 about the three Fry sisters, Cecelia, Jessie and Etta.
With the great war upon them, times are changing and each of the sisters will take a different path.
Cecelia has fallen hard for Max but he is the one man she can't have as he is the enemy a German soldier.
Jessie is doing her bit for the war effort and becomes an army nurse & is sent to Gallipoli and Egypt.
She has always craved adventure but it costs her greatly.
Etta who finds herself pregnant elopes to Capri with her Italian lover Carlo but her marriage certificate is one big lie.
Their mother Christina fears for her daughter's & what will become of them as the hidden secrets of her own may have consequences for them.
Really good engaging storyline that will keep you engrossed.
Thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story.

This story follows three sisters , Cecelia , Jessie and Etta . Two in love and one about to embark on an adventure that will change her life.
An epic story set in a time of great change , and where , on the whole , women were expected to accept their lot and confirm to what is expected of them. Each has a path to follow . Gripping fast paced read which I whipped through. Would absolutely recommend to fans of the genre, Can't wait to see what this author writes next.

Interesting story about three very different sisters as they come of age and embark on their very different paths on the eve of World War I in London. Over the course of the book we see innocent relationships become problematic, especially when Italians and Germans and others are part of those relationships, as wartime alliances, loyalty and suspicions form.

The story alternates between 1913 and up to the wartime period when the three sisters are just starting to spread their wings and 1891, when their mother Christina was their age. There is quite a disconnect between the wide-eyed, loving hopeful Christina of the past with the critical, unyielding matriarch we see in 1913. That Christina is now a woman who seems to disapprove of and dislike just about everything and everyone, clearly has favorites among her daughters, merely tolerates her loving husband and is more concerned with fashion, status and appearances than anything else. She’s snobbish and prudish, and the highlight of each day seems to be buying new clothes. Obviously, there’s a backstory and 1891 doesn’t end as well as it starts. It’s clear she has been hurt and has secrets, but unfortunately learning the secrets that brought her to this point doesn’t really redeem her and her cruelty to those who love her.
Love in a Time of War boasts a large cast and variety of characters, as the sisters are so different their interests, paths, acquaintances and loves are also varied. But each faces danger, betrayal, tragedy, and bittersweet acceptance in a world that constantly keeps changing and becomes more and more frightening and unstable. But this is the reality of life, and especially life during war.

Author Adrienne Chinn does a good job of developing complex characters, providing a sense of dread about the impending war and filling the pages with fascinating descriptions of places and events. However, very many books have been published lately during this time period and that of World War II, so the plot is rather familiar and often predictable.

Thanks to Harper Collins UK for providing an advance copy of Love in a Time of War via NetGalley for my honest review. I enjoyed it and recommend it. All opinions are my own.

The first in a series to come. A well written historical fiction. Family dynamics, The Great War and three sisters. I’d recommend this novel to those who love historical fiction!

I enjoyed this book very much although I do have an issue with the sometimes awkward sentence construction. The first sentence of Chapter 1 in particular. I almost gave up then but am glad that I stuck with it. Also a couple of things that were not pf the time being written about. But that may have been corrected before publication as I recieved an e-ARC to read and review. I shall look forward to the follow up books that the author mentioned in the acknowledgments.

A family saga with potential to move forward following the lives and loves of three very different Anglo italian sisters. The story unfolds slowly but is worth pursuing

I loved "The English Wife," so I was excited to read this book. It definitely didn't disappoint Loved it and would give it 4.5 stars. I wasn't too sure how I would like it, since the beginning was a little slow and I had a hard time getting into the story. Once I hit the 30% point, I couldn't put the book down. The three Fry sisters definitely led adventurous lives. Celie, Jessie and Etta were all strong women but were also so different from each other. The girls were more like their mother than Christina even realized. Christina was a hard woman to like at times. The secrets that she has kept for all these years, it's going to be horrible when Celie learns the truth. I hated the way she treated her daughter because of those secrets. Gerald was such a loving husband and father and had the patience of a saint. He supported his daughters in whatever they wanted to do, unlike their mother. I feel the most for Celie, because she waited so long and then realized the mistake she made. Jessie and Etta seem happy with their life, but I have a feeling Celie had a change of heart. There will definitely be problems when she learns what her husband is hiding. All around I LOVED this book and getting to explore all the places the sisters visited. Everyone needs a cousin Stefania. She was wonderful with both Etta and Christina.

Definitely recommend the book. Loved the characters, story and writing style. I was so sad when it ended. I wanted to keep reading about the Fry sisters. I felt like I was part of their family and got to know everyone so well. I hated how it ended. I needed to know if Celie was really happy with her decision (my guess is no), is Jessie will survive her mother-in-law and if Etta is still suffering from mental issues and so much more!!!! Then I realized the book is part of a series and I can't wait until the next installments. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I love this era and enjoyed this book. The storyline of the Fry sisters plus their parents takes place pre WW1 and continues until the war finishes. It follows their romantic and working lives and we walk step by step with them throughout WW1. Wonderful characters and can’t wait to read more. Thanks to Adrienne Chinn her publisher and NetGalley.

Set just before, during and after the Great War in various locations in Europe, Love In A Time of War is an enchanting story mainly about three sisters and their parents as well as many other characters. Flashbacks to 1891 Capri add context. The author writes about love, sorrow, perseverance and hope during an incredibly difficult time. Not only was Europe at war but Spanish flu was rife. She also writes about suffrage, photography and art, all described with in such a breathtaking way, resplendent with secrets, bends and turns. What a delight!

The three Fry sisters are very different from one another. Cecelia shares her father's interest in photography but is in love with her teacher, a German, to the horror of her mother. Several letters she and Max write to each other further the story. Jessie is an adventurous spirit and an army nurse. She does not intend to marry (in fact, nurses then were forbidden to marry) but to enjoy her nursing career and travel. And she indeed does travel! Amateur artist Etta is the most playful and falls in love with flamboyant Italian Carlo and elopes with him to Capri. But life isn't exactly what she had hoped. War changes everyone. Some of the horrors of war are mentioned (and war is a key component) but the focus is more on the characters on their choices.

Christina, the girls' mother, is a young woman on Capri in 1891. She meets and falls in love but her life takes her on a different path than she would have expected, as it does for everyone in this book. I like that her story was included as well. As the story unfolds the reader discovers reasons for her attitudes. And that ending!

Historical Fiction readers should flock to get this one! It would also appeal to General Fiction and Women's Fiction readers.

My sincere thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this wonderful book! This is the first in a trilogy...I am eagerly awaiting to see what happens next.

The first of a three-book series, Love In A Time Of War, follows the lives of three Anglo-Italian sisters through World War 1. Inspired by her own grandmother, Edith Adele Fry and her two great aunts, Jessie and Ettie, this book is a nod to the spirit of all the women who found themselves forging new lives during and after the war. Chinn is a Canadian author and this book has been included on CBCs list of books to read in 2022.

Readers really get a sense of the imminent end of innocence for the Fry girls. They are coming of age and dreaming about their futures when their world is turned upside down. War erupts and their dreams of the future are tested.

Celia, the oldest, falls in love with her German teacher, Max. Her mind knows she shouldn’t pursue him, but her heart tells her otherwise. When he goes off to war, promising to come back for her, she busies herself in her father’s photography studio and fights off the pursuits of Frank Jeffries. Will she wait for Max?

Jessie, a twin, enlists with the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service and is deployed to Gallipoli where she works on a hospital ship and then to Egypt where she works in a hospital in Alexandria. When she meets Dr. Khalid she’s forced to decide if falling for him is worth breaking her promise to remain dedicated to her career.

Etta, a twin, is the black sheep of the family. A bohemian, she falls in love with a struggling artist, Carlos, and tries to juggle their secrets alone after he’s drafted for the army. Will anyone find out about her marriage or pregnancy?

I was invested the minute I knew this was set in Italy and Egypt as they are my two favourite places for an adventure. The family secrets held my interest as did the girls’ journey negotiating unique paths in a changing world. I eagerly await book 2 set in the 20s and 30s to be published in late Spring of 2022 and book 3 set in WW2 to the 70s to be published in Spring of 2023.

I was gifted this advance copy by Adrienne Chinn, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

I have found this book to be an enjoyable read. It follows the lives of the Fry sisters from 1913 as they embark on life as adults during the 1st World War. Although different in nature they are all determined to succeed on their given paths in different parts of the world. These stories are set against the life of their mother in 1891..
I found the story engaging throughout and look forward to reading thenexttwobooksin the series.

Engaging story of a family with 3 daughters who choose 3 different lives to live during the first world war. Their father runs a photography shop and their mother stresses out about everything.

I hadn't realised this was the first book in a series but on finishing it I am glad to find out there is more the come!

I found Christina irritating and didn't enjoy her part of the story in Capri as much as that of her daughters during the war. Jessie especially I found a strong character with a good storyline. Etta, a bit like her Mother, was a bit washy-washy and silly.

I was disappointed that the end of the war years was glossed over and hardly mentioned and think for such an important date in history was worthy of more reading.

The storyline threw up lots of surprises which kept the reader interested until the end.
