I really enjoyed this book, it was well written with a good storyline and well developed characters who, especially the sisters, I took to my heart to stay. It was full of vivid imagery and descriptions and I cannot wait to read more. A really enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this one it was a good historical fiction book and learned some interesting things about WWI. It was well plotted and had engaging character’s.

"Love in a Time of War" is the second novel by Adrienne Chinn which I have read. This is an epic story set during WW1, with flashbacks to twenty years earlier. There are three sisters, Cecilia, Etta and Jessica, who all have very different personalities and follow different paths as the war comes to England. The book has an international feel as there is Italian blood in the family, and one of the girls has a German boyfriend. Some famous people get a mention, particularly in artistic Etta's storyline, including Virginia and Leonard Woolf, and Virginia's sister Vanessa Bell.

This is a really enjoyable book and apparently it is the first of a trilogy, so more to look forward to.

My expectations for this book were very high due to how much I loved the author's previous book, The English Wife. Love in a Time of War was a good read but did not live up to my hopes for it. The story jumped around between too many points of view, giving it a choppy feel. This was also a long book at almost 500 pages, so I was a bit shocked at the abrupt ending and the news that it wasn't a standalone novel. I did enjoy the time period and the characters and would recommend it to any WWI fiction lovers.

It took a short while for me to get into this book but once I did I loved it. The story is set in WW1 and tells how three sisters and their parents cope with life during the war.
One sister is in love but her boyfriend is German and has to return to his country to fight.
One sister is a nurse and joins the army to see the world . And the other sister is in love with an Italian and follows him to Italy.
Each of these sisters have many obstacles to overcome before they can be happy. We hear about the war from the point of view of both German and Engish soldiers and also from an Italian soldier and how their side in the war kept changing, I found this really interesting and my heart went out to Cecelia wondering how she would cope if she married her German boyfriend.
I really enjoyed this book which is the first one I have read by this author. I am also delighted to hear it will be a trilogy and I can't wait for book two.

Absolutely brilliant read about three sisters and their mother and their lives and tragedies faced during the First World War.
It is a story of love,hope, and bravery and I I can’t wait to read the next chapter in the lives of the Fry sisters. I am so glad there is more to come

This was a fascinating story of one familiys' love life during the First World War.. Some delightful characters and a very immersive story line. The fact that the story is also set in various parts of the world increased its interest and enjoyability. Great read!

An engrossing family saga. Christina and her three daughters are quite different characters but are all strong women in their different ways. Their story takes you to many places, from Capri to Cairo, through love lost and found, an unplanned pregnancy and an inter-racial marriage unusual for the time. A real page-turner.

This was a beautifully written book about how the war affected the Fry sisters! The author did a great job bringing the characters to life for us! It does start out a little slow but most historical novels do! For me it was the characters that had me invested in this book! When you can feel what the characters are feeling it makes the book come alive for you! It was a engaging and beautiful story! Happy reading everyone!

This is a long saga of three British sisters set during WWI. Each sister is so different than the other, even the twins. The one similar thing that binds them together is their deep and undying love for the men in their lives. Intertwined is the story of their mother, the cool and co trolled woman that they know is nothing like the you g woman she once was.

A story of love found and love lost. Italy, Egypt and England play an important part in each of their lives as they grow into the women they are meant to be.

I found this book very slow in the beginning and I wasn’t completely happy with the ending but the book is enjoyable to read.

A really enjoyable read. It did take me a few chapters to become engaged with this book but then I couldn’t put it down.
A family saga that begins in 1891 In Capri, Italy with Christina and takes us on a journey through to the early 1900’s and WW1.
The Fry sisters Cecilia and twins Jessie and Etta are the daughters of Christina and Gerald Fry. The girls are as different from each other in looks and personality. Cecilia is in love with her German teacher Max but with the war looming can she really have a future with a German. Jessie is a nurse who is looking to escape London and see the world and the war allows that to happen as she is sent to Gallipoli and Egypt. Etta who is the budding artist falls in love with Carlo an Italian and elopes to Capri but with the war escalating has she made the right decision. The lives and the journey of the sisters is overshadowed by the concern and the family secret that their mother conceals.
Loved the alternate chapters that take us on the journey of all 4 women. Themes of women’s rights flow through the story which gives us the reader a perspective of the struggles women in the era endured.

This fabulous read introduces the Fry sisters Cecelia and twins Jessie and Etta and the very different paths they take following the outbreak of world war 1. Also incorporating the story of their mother Christina in an easy to follow dual timeline from 1891 on the beautiful island of Capri. Cecelia becomes a photographer and journalist writing of the dangerous work being done by women as the men were away fighting. She also attended and photographed womens rights marches in London. Jessie is the adventurous sister who longs to travel and explore the world. She trains as a nurse and enlists in the army and is sent to Egypt and Gallipoli to care for wounded soldiers. Etta is an artist but after meeting the love of her life Carlo in the course of her work she elopes with him to Capri hiding the truth behind her sudden departure. Mother Christina is also keeping secrets from her past from all of her family.
This is a beautifully written story with all the ingredients I enjoy. Secrets, mystery, romance, strong women and family saga. It is a slow starter while introducing characters but develops into an unputdownable book. This is the first of a series of 3 books and I’m eagerly awaiting the next two. I hadn’t read Adrienne Chinn before but I’m now reading The English wife.

The novel goes back and forth between each sister's story, yet it's easy to follow and not confusing. Their mother Christina is also in the mix and you get insight into her stress and tribulations as she watches her daughters navigate a challenging world. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to friends looking for a great historical fiction piece.

A family saga that looks like its going to be a winner, has got off to a great start.

An engaging historical novel that scans the glob beginning in the early 1900’s. The story is about family. The matriarch ‘s actions as a young woman infatuated by her first romance and the actions and reactions that result. Secrets, so many secretly! Three very different sisters navigate life and their individual passions; art, photography, journalism, and medicine. Through WWI, and the Spanish Flu, waiting for love to return or finding love in a foreign land. This novel has great heart. Like many families there are struggles that should tear them apart but their love for each other bids them together. ‘‘Tis is the first in a series in the life of the Fry sisters.
