The awe-inspiring and gripping true story of the young man who survived not one, but three concentration camps, only - in the final days of the war - to be bombed while aboard a Nazi prison boat. I really enjoyed this book. It was hard to put down as it drew me in immediately and before I knew it I was in the middle of the book! Top marks!

This book tells the story of a man who spent time in three different concentration camps during the First World War. He was not Jewish and it’s probably one of this first books that I’ve read that the main protagonist in a concentration camp was not. He had a tough early life, a tough time during the war and then when he went to the camps it was awful for him. It was very well written in the that horrors of the camps came across and a lot of the time he dodged death by sheer luck or by being able to change something in a situation. I really enjoyed the historical explanations as I felt this really added to the story.

This amazing biography of a young Dutchman and his tortuous progression through WWll is a spellbinding story that included perseverance in extraordinary circumstances, and an amazing amount of quick thinking and sheer luck. The one element that kept Wim going was he was going to survive to see his mother again. She was always in his mind whatever trials and tribulations he endured and gave him the determination to survive.
The sad aspect of his story is described in the attitudes and actions of his fellow countrymen who supported the Nazi regime. They hunted young men such as Wim for the German Labour camps and anyone evading them was treated as a criminal and subject to harsh penalties in the concentration camps. His harrowing accounts of what went on in these camps, he endured three of them, brought out the best and the worst that humanity is capable of and reinforces the case that this period of recent history must never be forgotten.

I need to start this review to say how incredibly humbled and in awe of the people that went through this o credibly dark and horrific era and yet manage to live each day with such hope, inspiration and love, it is truly inspiring.
This book was incredible I cannot imagine how hard it was to be imprisoned in one concentration camp let alone three, as well as everything else that happened. This was a great blend of historical context and one mans journey of suffering, pain and hope through the holocaust, I cried bucket loads and this book will stay with me for a very long time. It was an honour to read it and be able to share in his story and I am so glad that I the story got told

The remarkable biographical history of Wim Aloserij, survivor of three concentration camps and his journey to freedom.

I've read quite a few Holocaust books, and this one is very finely balanced between Wim's personal survival story and a detailed factual history of the surrounding wartime events. Wim's story is highly detailed based on countless interviews with the author, and extensive further research.

The amount of research is impressive, as is the quest for accuracy, Wim's struggle to survive is always at the centre and it never becomes a dry history book.

This is at the 'historically accurate/ factual' end of the range of the Holocaust books I've read, but never at the expense of the personal journey.

A hugely impressive work, and a must read for those interested in Holocaust biographies and also those who want solid historical research.

I only wish more of Frank Krake’s works were translated.

The Last Survivor by Frank Krake

At the age of 94, Wim finally felt ready to tell his incredible story, which he kept secret for most of his life. A true story of bravery, courage and resilience, The Last Survivor is a compelling, life-affirming read that will make you gasp but also leave you amazed by one young man's determination - against the odds - to survive.

When I read books like this be they fact or fiction I am left in awe and the sheer courage and bravery , and the no words available to portray the atrocities that people had to endure at this terrible time ,
I do not know what is in the people who survive concentration camps and how they have it in them to do so , is it the fight to survive , luck ( for what it's worth ) not to be taken out of a line , never to be seen again ?
A good read about an awful time .
